Founded in 1824 in Charleston, the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) is home to the oldest medical school in the South. We're also the state's only integrated academic health sciences center, serving South Carolina through education, research, and patient care. Our university hospitals, research facilities, clinics, and patient care sites serve communities across the state.
Each year, MUSC educates and trains more than 3,000 students and 850 residents and fellows in six colleges: Dental Medicine, Graduate Studies, Health Professions, Medicine, Nursing, and Pharmacy.
In 2021, MUSC brought in more than $328 million in biomedical research funds, continuing to lead the state in obtaining this funding.
As the clinical health system of MUSC, MUSC Health is dedicated to delivering the highest quality patient care while training generations of compassionate, dedicated health care providers to serve the people of South Carolina and beyond.
Our values – collaboration, compassion, innovation, integrity, and respect – are the heart of what we do. Each day, our employees demonstrate these values as they help to fulfill MUSC's vision statement: Leading Health Innovation for the Lives We Touch.

The Medical University of South Carolina is more than just MUSC. What started as a small medical college in downtown Charleston, South Carolina, has transformed into a comprehensive, statewide academic medical system. We care for patients and educate the next generation of health care professionals across South Carolina and beyond.
MUSC employs over 26,000 people. Although we're all part of the same team, we may have differing benefits depending on our role within the larger organization. The Medical University of South Carolina is made up of three entities: Medical University Hospital Authority, Medical University, and MUSC Physicians.
As part of Medical University of South Carolina, the Medical University Hospital Authority employs most of our care team members across the state. Although MUHA is a separate entity from the university, MUHA's team members benefit from the state's insurance and retirement plans.
With a wide variety of positions, both clinical and non-clinical, the options are endless as a member of our care team at MUHA. Choose the location, specialty, area, or shift that works for you.
Founded in 1824 in Charleston, MUSC is the oldest medical school in the South, as well as the state’s only integrated, academic health sciences center with a unique charge to serve the state through education, research and patient care. Each year, MUSC educates and trains more than 3,000 students and more than 850 residents in six colleges: Dental Medicine, Graduate Studies, Health Professions, Medicine, Nursing and Pharmacy.
With $298 million in research funding in fiscal year 2022, the collaboration between faculty, staff, students, and our partners accelerates the movement of scientific discoveries that improve lives.
Made up of physicians, advanced practice providers, clinicians, as well as other non-clinical staff, MUSC-P provides excellent patient care across the Charleston area. MUSC-P is a separate business entity with separate benefits and employees but is still part of MUSC Health's overarching health system.
Our care team's health and retirement benefits are equivalent but are slightly different from those of the Medical University Hospital Authority. Generally, our teams are smaller, and they work mostly weekday shifts. You'll find a tight-knit team with increased work-life balance when you join MUSC-P.
