Job Summary/Purpose: The Executive Director of Facilities and Maintenance reports to the Enterprise Chief Facilities Officer directly with a matrixed (dotted line) relationship to the Chief Operating Officer of the MUHA Charleston Division.  The Executive Director has responsibilities for Medical (Hospital and Ambulatory) and University functions.  This position is the primary oversight for Charleston division hospital, ambulatory and business (as defined by occupancy type) facilities.

Oversees Facilities Operations and Maintenance, ensuring that mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems, and all other equipment are functioning effectively and efficiently, and in compliance with all life safety, fire safety, environment of care, and other regulatory requirements and codes. This role ensures all corrective and preventative maintenance are completed accurately and in a timely fashion, and that all related documentation is maintained in accordance with hospital and regulatory standards. This position responds to and addresses all utilities and life safety disruptions in a timely manner, and communicating all outages and/or repair delays in a professional, timely manner to the affected areas.

The Executive Director is responsible for positively partnering with Facilities peers as necessary to ensure that all hospital facilities repairs and maintenance are completed in the most effective and efficient manner. This role ensures all third party vendors completing repairs or maintenance in our facilities is completed up to the aforementioned standards.

Ensures that all repair and maintenance activities are conducted in a safe manner according to MUSC and MUHA policies, and in compliance with applicable codes and standards including Joint Commission, OSHA and other regulatory requirements.

Minimum Training and Education: Master’s degree in Engineering, Architecture, Facilities, Construction Management or Engineering Technology and minimum of 10 years’ related work experience, a minimum of 7 years’ of which must have been in a supervisory capacity. Will consider candidates without a Master's but must be obtained/completed within 2 years of hire.  Broad knowledge of HVAC, mechanical and electrical repair and systems, utilities, and total building systems associated with the healthcare or higher education industry.

• Experience managing design and construction for large facility capital infrastructure projects.

• Knowledgeable regarding audit protocols and regulatory requirements. (Joint Commission, OSHA, etc.)

• Must have strong operational, design, planning, and contracting background, as well as experience in coordination of major medical equipment/systems installations. 

• Strong verbal and written communication as well as computer skills are essential.

Required Licensure, Certifications, Registrations

Preferred - Certification in Health care building construction or healthcare facilities management preferred. OR Registration as a professional engineer or architect, and/or code certifications and/or healthcare related certifications desired.

(Infrequent) Ability to exert up to 50 lbs. of force. (Frequent) Examples include: To transfer a 100 lb. patient that can not assist in the transfer requires 50 lbs. of force. For every 100 additional pounds, assistance will be required from another healthcare worker. 20 lbs. of force is needed to push a 400 lb. patient in a wheelchair on carpet. 25 lbs. of force is required to push a stretcher with a patient with one hand. Ability to maintain 20/40 vision, corrected, in one eye or with both eyes. (Continuous) Ability to see and recognize objects close at hand or at a distance. (Continuous) Ability to match or discriminate between colors. (Continuous) Ability to determine distance/relationship between objects; depth perception.
