Job Description Summary

Come join the team that’s Changing What’s Possible at MUSC Health East, located in the heart of Mt. Pleasant at 1600 Midtown Avenue.  We are a large outpatient clinic with over 20 different specialties.  Enjoy a routine daytime schedule with no evenings, weekends or holidays and free parking on site. Provide proper sterilizing service for all clinics located in the outreach sites. Ensure clinics have the necessary sterilized instruments on a daily basis to perform their duties. Assist with maintaining sterilization equipment and proper documentation.

Job Description

 Sterilizing Service - Collects used instruments from clinics, washes, lubricates and packages instruments appropriately preparatory to sterilizing. Sterilizes packaged instruments appropriately. Returns sterilized instruments in a timely fashion to clinics. Cleans and maintain steam sterilizers and thermal washer/disinfector unit appropriately, including weekly spore testing. Keeps log of instrument loads sterilized and log of weekly spore record, cleaning and maintenance of sterilizers and thermal washer/disinfector. Maintains exam room supplies, instruments, and cleanliness as required by OSHA, MUSCP. 

Ensures accurate calibrations, cleaning and scheduled maintenance of clinical/lab equipment as required by OSHA, DHEC and MUSCP; tracked by documentation. 

Responsible for participating in in-services supported by MUHA sterile processing and keeping up to date on any changes in process. 

Responsible for training any PRN or new staff. 

Other duties as assigned. 

 

Job Responsibilities 

  • 25% - Sterilizing Service 

Success Criteria: 

Collects used instruments from clinics, washes, lubricates and packages instruments appropriately preparatory to sterilizing. Sterilizes packaged instruments appropriately. Returns sterilized instruments in a timely fashion to clinics.  

  • 25% - Ensures accurate calibrations, cleaning and scheduled maintenance of clinical/lab equipment as required by OSHA, DHEC, and MUSCP.  

Success Criteria: 

 Tracked by documentation of calibration, cleaning, and scheduled maintenance in logs. 

  • 25% - Cleans and maintains steam sterilizers and thermal washer/disinfector unit appropriately. 

 Keeps log of instrument loads sterilized and log of weekly spore record, cleaning and maintenance of sterilizers and thermal washer/disinfector. Maintains supplies, instruments and cleanliness as required by OSHA, MUSCP. 

  • 25% - Documentation of each sterilization load, maintenance, and cleaning records.  

Spot examination of sterile packages of instruments to insure sterility of contents. 

Additional Job Description

Required Minimum Training and Education:  

High School Degree or Equivalent. Work experience: 0-6 months.  

Required Licensure, Certifications, Registrations:  

N/A 

Physical Requirements:  

Continuous requirements are to perform job functions while standing, walking and sitting. Ability to bend at the waist, kneel, climb stairs, reach in all directions, fully use both hands and legs, possess good finger dexterity, perform repetitive motions with hands/wrists/elbows and shoulders, reach in all directions. Ability to be qualified physically for respirator use, initially and as required.  Maintain 20/40 vision corrected, see and recognize objects close at hand and at a distance, work in a latex safe environment and work indoors.  Frequently lift, lower, push and pull and/or carry objects weighing 50 lbs (+/-) unassisted, exert up to 50 lbs of force, lift from 36” to overhead 25 lbs.   Infrequently work in dusty areas and confined/cramped spaces.
