Job Summary/Purpose: Professional radiation oncology certified coder working in the department of radiation oncology reviews, enters and exports procedure charge codes for both technical and professional radiation oncology services. Must be knowledgeable of the ASTRO and ACR policies and guidelines for coding and documentation. The individual will work closely with the physicians in radiation oncology to determine the treatment plan for procedural coding to obtain pre-authorization from patient insurance plans prior to patients treatment starts They must stay abreast of any changes to the billing and procedural guidelines. The individual will become efficient with the record and verify system ARIA where he or she will review the department daily charges for accuracy and export the file from ARIA to EPIC. The individual will work very closely with Hospital and MUSCP Patient Accounting. They will be a member of the department’s revenue cycle teams, the department’s compliance manager and work closely with the patient accounting representatives. This individual will be the contact for any charge discrepancies, denials, appeals and medical record documentation from ARIA that isn’t available in EPIC. He or She will check insurance and VA authorizations prior to planned course of treatment.
Required Minimum Training and Education: Bachelor’s Degree or 4 years coding and/or medical billing experience required. Must be knowledgeable of the ASTRO and ACR policies and guidelines for coding and documentation. Accuracy and attention to detail imperative. Ability to interact well with others at all levels with a flexible, energetic, proactive and positive style. Ability to multi-task and prioritize.
Required Licensure, Certifications, Registrations: Certified coder or agreement to become Radiation Oncology Certified Coder within 6 months of employment.
Degree of Supervision: Works independently under the direction of the Department Administrator.
Job Duties and Responsibilities:
Maintain updated radiation oncology procedural code and documentation requirements. Request new procedural and supply codes be added to MUSC’s Charge Description Master file as needed.
Assures all registration and billing information is accurate in both ARIA and EPIC prior to charge export. Perform review and daily charge export for both Medical Center and MUSCP.
Verifies insurance coverage and obtains pre-authorization as required. Obtain VA authorization for all veteran sponsored patients.
Assist patients with financial assistance program enrollment, disability enrollment, out of work documentation and any other financial assistance as needed.
Work closely with IT engineer on data interfaces from Aria to Epic and Epic to Aria.
Department representative on revenue cycle team and compliance managers.
Back up for patient registration and scheduling and other duties as needed.
Physical Requirements: Continuous requirements are to perform job functions while standing, walking and sitting. Ability to bend at the waist, kneel, climb stairs, reach in all directions, fully use both hands and legs, possess good finger dexterity, perform repetitive motions with hands/wrists/elbows and shoulders, reach in all directions. Maintain 20/40 vision corrected, see and recognize objects close at hand and at a distance, work in a latex safe environment and work indoors. Frequently lift and/or carry objects weighing 20 lbs (+/-) unassisted. Lift from 36” to overhead 15 lbs. Infrequently work in dusty areas and confined/cramped spaces.
