Job Description

The Perioperative Registered Nurse (RN) Coordinator is responsible for coordinating, planning, and overseeing the daily clinical operations of the perioperative services department to ensure safe, efficient, and high-quality patient care. This role serves as a clinical leader and resource for the surgical team while collaborating with surgeons, anesthesia providers, nursing leadership, sterile processing, and ancillary departments to optimize patient outcomes, regulatory compliance, and operational excellence.

The Perioperative RN Coordinator promotes evidence-based practice, patient safety, exceptional customer service, and continuous quality improvement throughout the perioperative continuum, including preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative care.

Essential Responsibilities

Clinical Coordination

  • Coordinate the daily workflow and patient throughput within the perioperative department.
  • Collaborate with surgeons, anesthesia providers, procedural staff, and support services to facilitate efficient surgical scheduling and case progression.
  • Monitor operating room schedules and adjust staffing and resources based on patient volume and acuity.
  • Serve as the clinical resource and mentor for perioperative nursing staff.
  • Assist with complex surgical procedures as needed while maintaining clinical competency.

Patient Care

  • Ensure delivery of safe, evidence-based, patient-centered perioperative care.
  • Coordinate comprehensive patient assessments and individualized care plans.
  • Promote continuity of care throughout the surgical experience.
  • Advocate for patient safety, privacy, dignity, and informed decision-making.
  • Ensure compliance with patient identification, time-out procedures, infection prevention practices, and surgical safety standards.

Leadership

  • Provide day-to-day leadership and support to perioperative team members.
  • Promote teamwork, collaboration, accountability, and professional development.
  • Participate in staff orientation, onboarding, education, and competency validation.
  • Assist leadership with performance improvement initiatives and employee coaching.
  • Foster a culture of professionalism, respect, and continuous learning.

Quality & Regulatory Compliance

  • Ensure compliance with regulatory agencies and accreditation standards.
  • Participate in quality improvement projects, audits, and performance metrics.
  • Monitor infection prevention initiatives and surgical quality indicators.
  • Investigate safety events and participate in root cause analysis and corrective action planning.

Operational Responsibilities

  • Coordinate equipment, instrumentation, and supply availability for surgical procedures.
  • Collaborate with Sterile Processing and Materials Management to ensure instrument readiness.
  • Assist with physician preference card management and process improvement initiatives.
  • Support efficient operating room utilization while maintaining patient safety.
  • Participate in budget stewardship through responsible resource utilization.

Communication & Collaboration

  • Maintain effective communication with physicians, nursing leadership, anesthesia providers, ancillary departments, patients, and families.
  • Participate in interdisciplinary rounds, committee meetings, and departmental initiatives.
  • Promote exceptional patient and physician satisfaction through proactive communication and service excellence.

Additional Job Description

Minimum Qualifications

  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred
  • Current South Carolina Registered Nurse license or compact multistate license.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of recent perioperative nursing experience.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification with the American Heart Association is required
  • Demonstrated leadership, organizational, and critical thinking skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • CNOR certification preferred.
  • Previous charge nurse, coordinator, or leadership experience.
  • Experience with electronic medical records and perioperative documentation systems.
  • Experience with quality improvement initiatives and regulatory readiness.
