Job Summary:
The Charleston Alcohol Research Center at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) invites applications for a basic science tenure-track Assistant or Associate Professor in the research area of alcohol use disorder (AUD). The successful candidate will be an emerging national leader in the field, demonstrate leadership abilities, and have experience working with multidisciplinary teams. Major topics of interest in AUD research include: animal models examining the transition to excessive or compulsive drinking, genetic, molecular and epigenetic mechanisms of alcohol action on brain function, alcohol-induced changes in neuroimmune and glial biology, in vivo 2-photon and microendoscopic brain imaging, large-scale in vivo neurophysiology, and real-time manipulation of neural function and plasticity in relevant brain circuits.
Applicants should have a PhD and/or MD with appropriate research expertise and are expected to have an established record of high-impact publications, evidence of mentoring trainees, and a history of extramural research funding in the alcohol research field, commensurate with experience and rank. The successful applicant with the appropriate interest and qualifications will receive a competitive recruitment package and have opportunities for leadership roles and funding opportunities within the NIAAA-funded P50 Charleston Alcohol Research Center. Addiction researchers at MUSC train students in a successful neuroscience PhD graduate program and manage two NIH-funded T32 training grants, a NIDA-funded P50 Center grant, and a NIH-funded faculty mentoring grant. The successful applicant is expected to collaborate with basic and clinical alcohol research faculty in the Departments of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences and Neuroscience, departments that are highly ranked in NIH funding and with broad expertise in cellular and molecular addiction neuroscience, pharmacotherapies, pharmacogenetics, cutting-edge neuroimaging techniques (fMRI, MRS), as well as invasive and noninvasive neuromodulation strategies for treatment of AUD.
MUSC is located in the beautiful coastal city of Charleston, South Carolina – a city known for its arts and culture, higher education, architecture, beaches, and top-rated restaurants. Charleston receives perennial honors as one of the most desirable place to visit and live.
Interested applicants should submit an application packet that includes their CV, a 3-page statement outlining research interests and mentoring/teaching experience, a 1-page statement on past or future Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion efforts, and contact information for three professional references to Patrick Mulholland (mulholl@musc.edu). Please reference “Charleston ARC Faculty search” in the subject line. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis, but applicants are encouraged to submit complete applications before September 15, 2022 for full consideration.
