Job Summary: The Medical University of South Carolina College of Medicine invites applications for the role of Associate Dean for Admissions. The Associate Dean for Admissions is responsible for leading admissions and recruitment efforts that strategically produce a diverse and qualified student body that reflects the mission of the school and exhibits the attributes of excellent and compassionate physicians.

 

Job Duties: 

  • Provide creative and energetic leadership in the development, execution, and ongoing renewal of a student recruitment, admissions, and strategic scholarship planning that embodies the values and goals of the medical school, and recruits and supports a diverse student body best suited to the school’s culture and rigor.
  • Establish strategic direction and priorities for admissions. Develop an overall strategic admissions and recruitment plan in consultation with the Senior Associate Dean for Medical Education. Develop and manage the budget for admissions ensuring that resources are allocated in a way that achieves strategic priorities.
  • Chair the medical school’s admissions committee. Develop and continually evaluate admissions related policies and procedures in keeping with state and federal laws, accreditation standards of the LCME and regional accrediting bodies, and AAMC best practices; Train and serve as a resource for committee members, faculty and student participants in the admissions, interviewing and screening process.
  • Oversee the medical school’s scholarship committee. Collaborate with diversity and education leadership to select and award scholarships based on scholarship criteria and the school’s goals to reduce student indebtedness. Work with Student Financial Aid Services to allocate scholarship funds, and to evaluate the overall scholarship and financial aid experience of medical students, including effectiveness and timeliness of communication and counseling.
  • Develop, continually evaluate, and ensure an admissions experience that provides frequent and timely communication, transparency about the medical school’s values and requirements, and an understanding of the strengths of the school.
  • Analyze data and prepare reports regarding the effectiveness of the medical school’s recruitment, admission, scholarship and financial aid programs. Use the findings to guide improvement and recommend policy/procedure changes. Participate in strategic planning for the medical school related to these areas.
  • Serve as an energetic and articulate ambassador for the medical school and admissions; represent the medical school to external constituents including prospective students, their family members, pre-health advisors, undergraduate programs, and at national meetings (e.g., AAMC). Educate and establish close working relationships with education leadership, faculty, alumni and alumni board members, campus and health system leaders, and board of trustees members to engage in conversations about shifting demographics of the state, recruitment, retention, branding, financial aid, alumni engagement, medical school aspirations, and priorities that inform and shape admissions and financial aid and scholarship planning.
  • Create and implement strategies for the intentional recruitment of applicants who are from diverse backgrounds (e.g., cultural, socioeconomic, rural). Collaborate with the Senior Associate Dean for Diversity to coordinate and optimize recruitment of potential students who are underrepresented in medicine (URiM).
  • Oversee recruitment, management, professional development, and retention of direct reports and staff on the team. Develop a strong sense of teamwork, equity, and investment in mission across all functional areas; promote a positive work environment of mentoring and support.
  • Adopt and deploy appropriate technology, tools and resources to execute effective data management for admissions. Collaborate with university enrollment management to ensure the college’s data systems are integrated appropriately with university systems.
  • Collaborate with medical school leadership and undergraduate programs in the state in leveraging signature programs that enhance competitive advantages and the culture of the medical school.
  • Ensure that the medical school’s vision and up-to-date program information is presented on the college and university admissions websites and in other digital and social media, in collaboration with the Director of Communications for the school. Utilize existing and emerging technologies to communicate and build relationships with applicants, families, alumni, and pre-health advisors.
  • Work closely with the Associate and Assistant Deans for Student Affairs on the organization and implementation of new student orientation and related programming.
  • Participate as a member of the medical education policy and improvement committee with accountability for LCME Standard 10: Medical Student Selection, Assignment and Progress.
  • Model professionalism and leadership; foster diversity, inclusion and interprofessionalism.

 

Preferred Expertise and Experience: 

·         Experience in a leadership position in medical school admissions

·         Experience with LCME accreditation review or other educational accrediting body review 

·         Experience with holistic admissions and/or multiple mini interviews

·         Experience in the use of social networking technology for communications

 

Minimum Experience, Training Requirements:

PhD, MD, EdD or other relevant doctoral degree

·         A minimum of five years of experience with medical school admissions 

·         Experience in creating and implementing effective recruitment and admissions strategies

·         Experience and demonstrated appreciation for diversity and inclusion and success in building, recruiting admitting and/or                        supporting a diverse student body

·         Experience and demonstrated success in leading teams of professionals

·         Demonstrated excellent written and verbal communication skills

 

The Associate Dean for Admissions role requires 40-60% effort. Support for the remainder of the effort will be determined based on the clinical, research and/or academic interests and qualifications of the applicant and the needs of the home department. Faculty rank and home department will be determined based on the qualifications and experience of the applicant.
