Job Description
The College of Health Professions at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) invites applications for the position of Chair of the Department of Clinical Sciences. This leadership role reports directly to the Dean and is responsible for providing strategic vision and administrative oversight to advance the department’s teaching, research, and clinical missions. The Chair will play a pivotal role in fulfilling the College’s commitment to improving the health of populations by developing and inspiring future health scientists and leaders.
As one of six colleges within South Carolina’s only academic health center, the College of Health Professions is the largest at MUSC by student enrollment. Since its founding in 1966, the College has educated thousands of students from South Carolina and beyond, establishing itself as a national leader in health professions education, research, and innovation. Located in historic Charleston, MUSC offers a vibrant academic environment, supported by a dedicated faculty and a culture of continuous program improvement to best serve students, the community, and the broader world.
The Department of Clinical Sciences houses seven academic and professional practice programs:
Our programs are nationally recognized, with the Anesthesia for Nurses program ranked 15th and the Physician Assistant program ranked 35th by U.S. News & World Report. The Cardiovascular Perfusion program is the second largest in the country. The Department comprises over 31 faculty, 7 staff, and more than 440 students. Simulation-based education is a hallmark of our programs, and our faculty are recognized leaders in this area. We are committed to advancing interprofessional education and integrating it into clinical practice, with faculty and students actively engaged in clinical work within the MUSC Health enterprise.
We are seeking candidates with demonstrated academic and administrative leadership experience who can further the Department’s mission. The Chair will be responsible for managing administrative, budgetary, scholarly, and instructional functions. Strong leadership, mentorship, and collaborative skills are essential. Candidates should have significant academic and administrative experience and a record of scholarship, teaching, and/or research. The Chair will balance administrative leadership with teaching, clinical practice, and/or research responsibilities. Additionally, the College seeks candidates with a strong growth mindset who will implement innovative ideas and practices within the department. Applicants must be health professionals holding a Ph.D. or other terminal academic degree (doctoral degree required). Candidates should possess previous experience in a clinical science or clinical science-related profession. Academic rank and salary will be commensurate with experience.
