Job Description Summary

The Department of Radiation Medicine at the Medical University of South Carolina is recruiting for a faculty position with Instructor or Assistant Professor academic ranking for a motivated Radiation Oncology physicist. The successful candidate will be expected to participate in all facets of our radiation oncology physics program, including clinical support, QA, teaching, clinical projects, and periodic support of our satellite sites.

Candidates should be certified or eligible for board certification by the American Board of Radiology (ABR). Preference given to applicants with 3-5 years’ experience, including residency. Experience with Varian TrueBeam accelerators, Eclipse treatment planning, Elekta HDR, Gamma Knife, and Accuray RadiXact is desirable. An M.S. or Ph.D. degree in Medical Physics or in a related field is required. In addition, programing skills, and enthusiasm for the latest technology would position the candidate very well for upcoming clinical/research projects.

The Radiation Medicine Department at MUSC is dynamic and growing. Current clinical faculty staffing at the main campus includes eight radiation oncologists and seven physicists. In addition, we have seven dosimetrists and dedicated IT support. The division of Medical Physics has a CAMPEP accredited radiation oncology physics residency program with two physics residents. The Department of Radiation Medicine also supports six medical residents. Treatment equipment includes two Varian TrueBeams plus one Varian TrueBeam STx with HD MLC, two Siemens Somatom Confidence RT Pro CT simulators with Varian RGSC (Respiration Gating for Scanners), Varian RPM (Real-time Position Management), VisionRT optical surface monitoring system, one Accuray RadiXact, Elekta Flexitron HDR (construction of a dedicated brachytherapy suite planned for 2025), Varian VariSeed LDR with QuickLink (I125/Pd103/Cs131), and one Gamma Knife Esprit. Treatment planning systems utilized are Eclipse with ARIA record and verify system, RayStation, Gamma Plan, and Nucletron Oncentra. Eye plaque planning with Plaque Simulator(I-125), or Gamma Tile(Cs-131) supported by MIM is offered. Other equipment and software include IBA scanning systems, Mobius, Velocity, SNC QA devices, and a broad variety of other physics instrumentation. MUSC Radiation Medicine treats approximately 1300 patients per year and is the only program in South Carolina providing total body irradiation (TBI) and total skin electron treatment (TSET).
