The Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) Department of Medicine, Division of General Internal Medicine seeks a Section Chief of Adult Palliative Care and Medical Director of Palliative Care for the MUSC enterprise. This position will work closely with GIM leadership, the Pediatrics Palliative Care Director, Palliative Steering Committee, Acute / Critical Care / Trauma ICCE, Department and institutional leadership to chart the course for palliative growth and innovation at MUSC. As Section Chief of the Adult Palliative Care team, the Director will balance the education, research and clinical care responsibilities of the group and will provide leadership, scholarly support and mentorship to a talented team of faculty and advance practice providers, and inspire a team which contributes to all missions of the university: clinical care, education and scholarship. As Palliative Care Medical Director this position plays a key role in determining Palliative Care strategy and growth across the MUSC Health enterprise as well as leading the state of South Carolina in education and expansion of best palliative care practices. In addition to leadership responsibilities this position will also maintain a clinical presence.
This is an outstanding opportunity to continue building upon an already successful Palliative Care program. MUSC’s Palliative Care program received a 2019 Circle of Life Citation of Honor from the American Hospital Association and has been recognized with a multi-year Duke Endowment grant to help expand Palliative Care across the state of South Carolina in collaboration with MUSC’s National Telehealth Center of Excellence.
The Section of Adult Palliative Care has 7 faculty members and 6 advanced practice providers with both an outpatient and inpatient clinical practice and an ACMGE approve Palliative Care Fellowship with 2 fellows per year. The Pediatrics Palliative Care team is comprised of 3 faculty and 2 APRN. Our interprofessional teams of physicians, nurses, social workers, chaplain, and other colleagues provide state-of-the-art palliative care to seriously ill patients in our inpatient and outpatient services.
The ideal candidate will be Board-Certified MD/DO in Palliative Care, possess leadership experience at an academic health center, have a minimum academic rank of Associate Professor, and be well versed in scholarship, teaching and leadership. The candidate must possess outstanding leadership skills; he/she will be strongly committed to the tripartite mission of education, clinical care and research. The selected candidate must be comfortable working in a matrix management structure and environment. Experience mentoring, developing staff competency at all levels, and creating a highly accountable and high-performing team is essential.
Payscale Salary Range: UNIV-Band 0: Commensurate with experience.
