Job Description
The Department of Radiology and Radiological Sciences in the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) has an opening for a full-time Diagnostic Medical Physicist. The successful candidate will join a group of four medical physicists, will be an integral member of the MUSC team, and will travel to outlying sites and work independently to provide clinical medical physics services. While a board certification in Diagnostic Medical Physics by the ABR is highly desired, board-eligible candidates may be considered, depending on their experience and background. Candidates with a PhD and an appropriate background will be considered for a faculty appointment in the Department of Radiology and Radiological Sciences.
Primary Responsibilities:
• Independently carry out annual performance evaluations of clinical imaging x-ray systems (fluoroscopy, radiography, mammography, bone density,and CT)
• Assist in carrying out performance evaluations of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) systems, ultrasound and nuclear medicine
• Oversee and review technologist quality control programs,
• Support and consult with technologists, radiologists, and Radiation Safety Officers (RSO) with regard to clinical protocol management, dose assessment, and review of Radiation Protection Program Elements
• Perform assessments of public exposure in areas surrounding x-ray rooms
• Provide design, consultation, and assessment of shielding requirements during site planning; evaluate integrity and adequacy of installed supplemental shielding
• Perform routine audits of technologist QA and become familiar with issues related to the x-ray registration, regulations and Radiation Protection Programs
• Must be willing to occasionally travel from Charleston, SC to nearby MUSC locations, within a few hours driving distance
• Provide leadership on quality committees that collaborate with radiologists and technologists on protocol optimization, image quality and dose reduction.
• Participate in teaching efforts of the Medical Physics residency including mentorship and teaching responsibilities
Required Skills:
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Understanding of state and federal regulations, ACR and JC accreditation criteria, process, and compliance. Familiarity with applicable regulatory guides, and regulations.
• Technical experience in performing equipment surveys as required by the ACR, JC for meeting regulatory requirements
• A desire to demonstrate initiative and ownership of daily tasks and projects
• Capable of paying strict attention to detail, thorough, and well-organized
• Comfortable dealing with a variety of situations and different personalities
• Ability to actively problem-solve by seeking, developing, and implementing viable solutions
• Ability to lift 50 lbs and drive with own vehicle to off-campus sites
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:
• MS in Medical Physics
• Valid Driver’s License
• Board eligible to take the American Board of Radiology certification exam in Diagnostic Medical Physics or the Canadian College of Physicists in Medicine membership exam.
Preferred Education and Experience Requirements:
• Demonstrated track record of scholarship
• Minimum 2 years clinical experience in a similar role
• PhD in Medical Physics
• Board certified by the American Board of Radiology in Diagnostic Medical Physics
• MQSA certification to independently carry out surveys of mammography equipment and facilities
About the Department of Radiology and Charleston:
The department currently consists of 52 clinical Radiologists, 4 PhD level Medical Physicists, 10 Clinical Instructor Jr. Faculty /Fellows, 61 GME residents,with a research infrastructure of study coordinators and grant administrators. The department has a wide range of radiological imaging equipment(around 180 units) including 14 CT scanners, 10 MR.
