Job Description Summary

The College of Medicine is accepting applications for postdoctoral fellows in medical education to participate in a novel, one-year training opportunity to prepare for a long-term career in medical education, specifically in the anatomic sciences. Working with experienced faculty in the Department of Regenerative Medicine and Cell Biology, postdoctoral fellows will acquire the knowledge and practical skills necessary to join a teaching faculty instructing medical students in human anatomy in innovative classroom settings and in the human anatomy dissection laboratory. Successful candidates will start as early as Summer, 2024. We are looking for enthusiastic candidates with a strong background in current biomedical sciences, demonstrated interest and commitment to teaching, and excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Postdoctoral fellows in medical education will be required to complete a focused study of human anatomy through participation in required weekly didactics. After acceptance, the fellow will be assigned a primary mentor in gross anatomy and secondary mentor determined by the fellow’s identified secondary interest (ex: embryology, histology, neuroanatomy). Mentors will provide individual assessment and feedback in knowledge acquisition and will assist fellows in preparation of teaching materials for select lectures, laboratories and/or team-based learning sessions. Fellows will be expected to acquire human dissection skills through mentored preparation of prosections, used for student instruction, and required teaching hours in the human anatomy dissection lab. In the dedicated year of training, postdoctoral fellows should acquire a strong foundation of knowledge in anatomic sciences to support their development as future faculty members in an integrated medical sciences curriculum. Postdoctoral fellows will participate in curriculum planning and evaluation by inclusion in preclerkship governing/planning committees and student feedback sessions. Fellows will be encouraged to participate in development and implementation of innovative pedagogical approaches and learning platforms that improve student learning. Faculty development opportunities will be supported by membership in our Academy of Medical Educators and each postdoctoral fellow will complete a mentored scholarly project in medical education with opportunities for publication and presentation at a national education conference. Following assessment of fellows throughout the one-year program, faculty mentors and directors will provide an objective letter of recommendation detailing the strengths and skills of each fellow.

Applicants will be required to provide a CV, a personal statement of intent addressing their interest in a career in education and relevant experiences, and 2-3 letters of recommendation. Please send the above documents to Dr. Debra Hazen-Martin at hazenmad@musc.edu
