Job Description Summary

The Vascular Ultrasound Technologist / Echocardiography Technologist performs high-quality non-invasive vascular and cardiac ultrasound examinations in an outpatient ambulatory setting. This position is responsible for obtaining diagnostic images and data to assist physicians in the evaluation and treatment of cardiovascular disease. The technologist ensures patient safety, maintains equipment functionality, and provides exceptional patient-centered care while supporting efficient clinic operations.

Job Description

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Echocardiography Services
  • Perform comprehensive transthoracic echocardiograms (TTE) according to established protocols.
  • Obtain diagnostic-quality cardiac ultrasound images, measurements, and Doppler studies.
  • Assist cardiologists and providers in the interpretation process by ensuring complete and accurate studies.
  • Identify and communicate urgent or critical findings according to established procedures.
  • Prepare preliminary technical reports and documentation in the electronic medical record.
Vascular Ultrasound Services
  • Perform non-invasive vascular examinations, including:Carotid duplex studiesVenous insufficiency studiesVenous and arterial duplex examinations of the upper and lower extremitiesAbdominal vascular studiesAnkle-Brachial Index (ABI) testingOther peripheral vascular diagnostic studies as ordered
  • Obtain accurate hemodynamic and anatomical data for interpretation.
  • Recognize abnormal findings and escalate urgent results appropriately.
Patient Care
  • Verify patient identity and examination orders.
  • Explain procedures and address patient concerns.
  • Position patients safely and comfortably during examinations.
  • Monitor patients for adverse reactions or changes in condition during testing.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality and HIPAA compliance.
Operational Responsibilities
  • Ensure ultrasound equipment is maintained, calibrated, and functioning properly.
  • Perform quality assurance activities and participate in accreditation initiatives.
  • Maintain adequate supplies for diagnostic testing.
  • Schedule and coordinate studies to maximize patient access and clinic efficiency.
  • Support workflow improvement initiatives and patient satisfaction goals.
  • Participate in departmental meetings, continuing education, and competency assessments.

Required Qualifications

  • Graduate of an accredited Diagnostic Medical Sonography program or Cardiovascular Technology program.
  • Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer (RDCS) through ARDMS or Registered Cardiac Sonographer (RCS) through CCI.
  • Registered Vascular Technologist (RVT) through ARDMS or Registered Vascular Specialist (RVS) through CCI.
  • Current BLS Certification.
  • Minimum one (1) year of experience performing echocardiography and vascular ultrasound examinations preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of cardiovascular anatomy, physiology, and pathology.
  • Proficiency in vascular and cardiac ultrasound imaging techniques.
  • Strong understanding of non-invasive vascular testing protocols.
  • Ability to recognize critical findings requiring immediate provider notification.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently while maintaining high-quality diagnostic standards.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills.
  • Proficiency with electronic medical records and imaging documentation systems.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, and position patients throughout the workday.
  • Ability to lift and assist patients in accordance with organizational policy.
  • Manual dexterity required to operate ultrasound equipment and computer systems.
  • Ability to move portable diagnostic equipment as needed.

Work Environment

  • Outpatient ambulatory hospital or medical pavilion setting.
  • Monday through Friday schedule with no routine overnight call requirements.

Additional Job Description

Education: Graduation from a school of Diagnostic Medical Sonography. Work Experience 2-4 years. Certification by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS). Current American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) certification or American Red Cross BLS for Healthcare Providers certification is required
