5E is a 19-bed acute care cardiovascular and transplant unit with 1:4 patient ratio. The patient population served includes patients with heart and lung transplants, congestive heart failure, advanced congestive heart failure requiring ionotropic support, congenital heart defects, coronary artery disease, rhythm disturbances, AICD management, sudden cardiac death, cardiac conduction abnormalities, pacemaker management, LVADs (ventricular assist devices), interventional valve replacement, pulmonary hypertension, and pulmonary artery management devices. In addition, the patient population also includes those who have received vascular surgical procedures

Ashley River Tower (ART) 6 East is a 21-bed surgical acute care unit providing care to patients with variety of diagnoses. ART 6 East commonly cares for patients admitted on general medicine services, plus specialty services including GI surgery, surgical oncology, vascular surgery, plastic surgery. Additionally, ART 6 East cares for patients admitted on cardiology, CT surgery, hematology/oncology and/or other services as appropriate based on patient needs.

Ashley River Tower (ART) 6 West is a 21-bed acute care unit providing comprehensive care for patients with a wide range of medical and surgical diagnoses. The unit routinely cares for patients admitted under general medicine, cardiology, as well as specialty services including GI surgery and surgical oncology. Additionally, 6W supports other services that are appropriate based on patient needs such as cardiothoracic surgery, plastic surgery, vascular surgery, and hematology/oncology. Nurses on ART 6W are trained in the use of a variety of clinical devices, tools, and techniques to ensure the delivery of safe, high-quality care. Typical nurse to patient ratios ranges from 1:4 to 1:5. Our team thrives in a collaborative, educational environment that includes physicians, respiratory therapists, physical therapists, and other ancillary staff. 7A Family Medicine: Hospital Extension U07A is an 18 Bed Medical Surgical Unit at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, South Carolina. Family medicine is similar to general medicine; we see patients over their lifetimes, past eighteen years of age, often with chronic illnesses. With this, we see more medical patients, but we have surgical patients placed on the floor in smaller numbers. Our nurses work collaboratively with the Physician team, Respiratory Therapist, Physical Therapist, Occupational Therapists, Speech Pathologist, Case Managers, and Social Workers to customize care for patients. These patients tend to range from moderate to high acuity. 7A offers opportunities for nurses to obtain Med-Surg certification.
As an 18-bed Medical Acute Care Unit, 7B offers excellent opportunities to develop a strong foundation as you begin your nursing career. On our unit, we specialize in Family Medicine and Internal Medicine patients, including individuals with kidney disease, sepsis, pulmonary illnesses, sickle cell disease, and dermatological disorders. Our nurses work closely with the interprofessional team of physicians, respiratory therapists, pharmacists, and physical therapists to provide high-quality care and achieve safe outcomes for a diverse patient population. New graduate nurses begin with a ten-week orientation process, followed by the opportunity to pursue additional education in palliative care, wound care, and leadership development. 7East Medical Acute Care Unit is a 26-bed inpatient Medical-Surgical Unit which provides care to an adult and geriatric patient population. 7East is identified as the designated research floor for the organization with national recognition for the Liberate Pulmonary Study. Other research studies, including Alzheimer’s, Renew, Melanoma, Plexifor, IV Carbamazepine, and Yohimbine, are performed regularly. 7East provides holistic care for patients with internal medicine issues of an acute and chronic nature, including but not limited to Sickle Cell Anemia, Cystic Fibrosis, Pulmonary Hypertension, Diabetes, COPD, Lupus, Sepsis, and Peritoneal Dialysis.
ART 7 East is a dynamic 19-bed unit dedicated to the care of adult oncology and medical-surgical patients. The team expertly manages complex cancer diagnoses, including both hematologic malignancies and solid organ tumors, and provides specialized care for patients receiving high-risk chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and those enrolled in clinical trials. The unit also addresses treatment-related side effects with close monitoring and individualized interventions. In addition to oncology patients, ART 7 East cares for a diverse medical-surgical population ranging from moderate to high acuity, offering a challenging and rewarding clinical environment. All nurses are required to complete the National Cancer Institute Collaborative Systemic Therapies Course within their first year to achieve chemotherapy competency, with ongoing opportunities for advanced, cancer-specific education. The unit strongly encourages specialty certification in oncology, medical-surgical nursing, and palliative care, fostering professional growth and excellence in patient-centered care.
8 West is a 24-bed inpatient mixed Neuroscience unit for adult and geriatric patients located in the West wing on the 8th floor of the main hospital. All patient rooms are private. The floor manages a variety of adult Neuroscience Acute Care patients with a focus on Neurosurgical patients including spine surgery, brain tumor resections, surgical stroke patients, and supports the Comprehensive Spine Center program. The mixed patient population provides a unique opportunity to learn about a variety of neurosurgical interventions in addition to general neurology/medical/surgical patients. 8W also supports our sister units and care for overflow of Parkinson's, multiple sclerosis, and neuromuscular diseases. 8W nurses are supported and encouraged to obtain a certification when eligible.
9 West is a 23-bed inpatient General Neurology/Medical Stroke/Epilepsy Monitoring Unit for adult and geriatric patients located in the West Wing on the ninth floor of the main hospital. All patient rooms are private, with one room designated as a reverse airflow room. Nine rooms are hard-wired to accommodate continuous epilepsy monitoring, a program unique to 9 West. The floor also manages Medical Stroke patients and general neurology patients, including diagnoses such as Parkinson's, multiple sclerosis, neuromuscular diseases, seizures and strokes managed medically. 9 West supports Comprehensive Spine Center and Comprehensive Epilepsy Center programs and accreditation. We support our sister units and care for the overflow of neurosurgical patients and spine surgeries as well.
Located on the top floor of the Main Hospital, 10 West is an acute care unit that encourages integrity, teamwork, and professional development. As a 21-bed unit, we accept a range of patients, including those involved in car accidents, assaults, and traumatic falls. This high-intensity population is accompanied by elective spine surgeries and overflows from the Emergency Department and Post Anesthesia Care Unit. MUSC’s Orthopedic Unit is located on 10 East in the Main Hospital in beautiful downtown Charleston. 10 East is a 20-bed acute care, post-operative unit specializing in Orthopedic and Urology surgeries. Our patients seek us out for our expertise in adult reconstruction, total joint replacement, ortho trauma, ortho oncology, and urologic procedures. MUSC’s Joint Replacement program has received the Join Commission Advanced Certification for Total Hip and Knee Replacement and the Joint Commission Gold Seal Certification for Total Shoulder Replacement. 3 West Cardiology is a 20-bed acute care nursing unit specializing in the care of Interventional Cardiovascular and general Cardiology patients. We work in close collaboration with the Electrophysiology (EP) team to support seamless, multidisciplinary cardiac care. The unit manages a wide range of cardiac procedures, including left and right heart catheterizations—with sheath pulls performed at the bedside—ablations, and pacemaker and defibrillator insertions. We are also a dedicated unit for Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR) patients and provide pre-operative care for a variety of cardiovascular procedures. In addition to procedural care, we provide comprehensive management of complex cardiac conditions, including advanced heart failure. The unit cares for patients with Left Ventricular Assist Devices (LVADs) and heart transplants, and serves as the secondary unit for the Cardiothoracic (CT) Surgery population.
6W Burn Trauma Stepdown Unit is a 24-bed Stepdown Unit at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston. 6W is a unique unit at MUSC and within the state as the only Burn Stepdown unit. All 6W’s rooms are monitored with 8 rooms being ventilator compatible. All nurses are trained in complex burn dressing changes and supported by Burn Team members and Free-Floating Charge Nurse. Robust unit leadership supports the onboarding of new graduate nurses and monitors quality metrics. Our nurses work collaboratively with the Burn Physician Team, Trauma Physician Team, Respiratory Therapists, Physical Therapists, Occupational Therapists, Speech Pathologists, Case Managers, and Social Workers to customize care for patients. 6W offers opportunities for nurses to obtain Med-Surg, Burn, and Trauma certifications.
Located at MUSC Health’s extension hospital, 8D EH is a 13-bed inpatient adult acute med-surg unit open 24/7. 8D EH is designed to accommodate medical and surgical patients from private hospitalists or family medicine service lines. The unit serves direct and new admissions coming into the hospital from the ED, post recovery or other inpatient units under the medical-surgical service lines with a variety of diagnoses. 8D EH is a smaller unit, supportive environment with lots of clinical ladder and leadership opportunities for new nurses!
Located at MUSC Health’s main hospital, 9 Center is a nine-bed ER overflow, Admission and Holding unit open 24/7. 9Center is designed to help alleviate boarding in the Emergency Departments. The unit serves direct and new admissions coming into the hospital from the ED under the medical-surgical service lines with a variety of diagnoses. 9 Center is designated and designed for short-term treatment, observation until discharge, or next-day transfer to inpatient units.
9 East is a 23-bed Neuroscience Step-Down Unit specializing in high-acuity care for adult Neurosurgical and Neurological patients with conditions such as ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke, post-operative craniotomy, seizures, and neuroendovascular procedures. Nurses on the unit manage complex interventions including arterial lines, external ventricular and lumbar drains, ICP monitoring, bedside procedures, moderate sedation, and high-alert drip titration. With a typical nurse-to-patient ratio of 1:3 or 1:4 based on acuity, 9 East is a fast-paced, collaborative, and supportive environment.
7 West Surgical Oncology is a high-acuity, 24-bed adult inpatient unit specializing in gynecologic and head & neck oncology, as well as benign GYN and ENT patients. We also care for a mix of medical–surgical patients, including respiratory, endocrine, GI, trauma, and behavioral health needs. Our team manages chemotherapy, radiation, TPN, tube feedings, and cares for complex head & neck surgical patients with trachs, laryngectomies, and advanced wound needs. We also support patients throughout the palliative and hospice journey. Staff on 7 West develop strong skills with heparin and insulin drips, PCA/epidural pain management, and various surgical drains. New team members receive specialized training with opportunities to pursue oncology, head & neck, med-surg, and palliative care certifications. 7 West offers a supportive, team-focused environment where RNs, PCTs, and unit secretaries can grow their skills and make a meaningful impact to their team and patients.
ART 7 West is a specialized 23-bed adult inpatient unit dedicated to the care of patients receiving cellular therapies, including Bone Marrow Transplant, CAR-T, TIL therapy, and other advanced hematologic treatments, as well as those being treated for Malignant Hematology conditions. The team expertly manages patients receiving chemotherapy, immunotherapy, transplantation, and those enrolled in clinical trials, providing close monitoring and personalized care throughout their complex treatment journeys. All nurses complete the National Cancer Institute Collaborative Systemic Therapies Course within their first year to achieve chemotherapy competency, with ongoing opportunities for advanced cancer-specific education. ART 7 West strongly encourages specialty certification in oncology, cellular therapy, medical-surgical nursing, and palliative care, supporting professional growth while maintaining the highest standards of patient-centered care.
4 East is a 17 bed mixed acuity Cardiothoracic Surgery Intermediate Care Unit. 4 East cares for all cardiothoracic patients both pre and post cardiac and thoracic surgery. These surgeries include but are not limited to heart transplants, lung transplants, left ventricular assist devices, coronary artery bypass grafts (CABGs), valve replacements, lobectomies, esophagectomies, and thoracotomies. The stepdown patients are staffed 1:3 while the medical surgical patients are staffed 1:4. They have an active Shared Governance council that is committed to the success of the unit and works hard to ensure the best quality of patient care is provided.
MSICU is an 18-bed unit that provides care to adult patients covering various medical and surgical patient populations. The various medical diagnoses include multi-system organ failure, hematology/oncology, pulmonary hypertension, sepsis, respiratory failure, and post lung transplants. This intensive care unit also has a sub-specialty in digestive disease and cares for patients with renal, endocrine, liver disease, GI surgery and GI hemorrhage, pancreatitis, and islet cell transplants. In addition, MSICU cares for the obstetric patients requiring ICU level of care. Staff are trained in advanced hemodynamic monitoring, continuous renal replacement therapy, ECMO, pulmonary artery catheters, and aggressive ventilator therapy. The MSICU has earned the Silver Beacon Award.
With 23 beds, The Neuroscience Intensive Care Unit is one of the largest ICUs within the MUSC Charleston Campus. As a comprehensive stroke center, and level one trauma center, the NSICU cares for some of the highest acuity neurosurgical and neurological patients in the region. Our patient population consists of those diagnosed with ischemic strokes, hemorrhagic strokes, traumatic brain injuries, spinal cord injuries, seizures, brain tumors, neuromuscular disorders, and post-op neurosurgical patients. Staff are trained in the management of external ventricular drains (EVD’s), intracranial pressure monitoring, lumbar drains, continuous renal replacement therapy, LVAD’s and much more. The NSICU thrives on interdisciplinary collaboration in a fast-paced learning environment focused on providing safe, high-quality patient and family centered care.
5 West, Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (CICU) is a 23-bed mixed acuity Heart and Vascular unit. Twelve of our patient rooms are dedicated to service ICU level patients, including management of swan Ganz catheters, intra-aortic balloon pumps, Impellas, ventilated patients, and CRRT. The remaining 11 beds serve intermediate-level patients. The nurses on this unit can manage a-lines, lumbar drains, and titrate cardiac drips on the intermediate care patients. Our patient population consists primarily of Advance Heart Failure, Cardiology, and Vascular surgery patients. This unit functions as the step-down unit for the Ashley River Tower, offering a higher level of care for the many specialties in this building. Nurse: patient ratios range from 1:1-1:3 based on patient acuity. This highly engaged team is innovative, dynamic, and fast-paced.

The CTICU is a 21 bed Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Unit specializing in everything Cardiac Surgery. We care for patients post operatively after coronary bypass, valve replacements/repairs, and aortic dissection repairs. We also care for patients after thoracic surgery including esophagectomies, and pneumonectomies. We are the only heart and lung transplant center in the State and are top 5 in the nation for LVAD implantation. We care for patients that have many different methods of mechanical circulatory support i.e. intraortic balloon pumps, impellas, centrimag, and we are the only adult unit that manages VA ECMO. We are the only unit that is specialized and certified in CSU-ALS which is ACLS for post cardiac surgery. Any one of our beds can be used for emergent surgeries and procedures. Given the fast pace, and high acuity we have an extensive orientation process. There are many different opportunities for professional development within the CTICU. After getting experience many of our nurses are on the Rapid Response Team, and ECMO team. There is also Leadership growth potential with RSL/CSL positions. We are a unit that is greatly dependent on a successful Shared Governance, which drives practice changes and workflow optimizations.

We utilize 21 private treatment spaces to serve the highly specialized needs of our patients. The defining characteristics of our staff are teamwork and innovation. We work in a fast-paced environment, taking care of patients whose acuity is almost double the national average. We specialize in Cardiothoracic Surgery, Left Ventricular Assistive Devices, Chest Pain, Vascular Surgery, Interventional Cardiology, GI Surgery, Hematology/Oncology, and Women’s Services. The MUSC Adult Emergency Department is a Level 1 Trauma Center with 42 treatment areas including four trauma bays. We are a dynamic and fast-paced department that oversees more than 50,000 cases annually. With a dedicated CT scanner and an X-ray machine within our unit, we have the ability to quickly diagnose and treat our patients. We are also a Comprehensive Stroke Center, Accredited Chest Pain Center, and the Designated Burn Center for the region. With MUSC rapidly expanding across the state, we proudly serve the surrounding communities for all their acute health care needs. As a Registered Nurse within our department, you will have the opportunity to work alongside a diverse health care team that utilizes research and best practice to provide the utmost care for our patients. MUSC delivers approximately 3,600 patients annually. Labor and Delivery, consists of 17 LDRs, 2 ORs, 3 PACU beds, and 4 Triage rooms. In addition to vaginal and cesarean deliveries, L&D provides operative services such as cerclage and tubal ligation. Medical support includes management of gestational/chronic diabetes, hypertension, and other high risk antepartum conditions including acceptance of high-risk maternal transports from the region. Wireless Electronic Fetal Monitoring is available in all beds. Perinatal palliative care is available as needed. The staffing mix includes Registered Nurses, Certified Surgical Technicians, and Unit Secretaries.
The Mother Baby Unit/Anterpartum unit is a 29-bed unit providing antepartum, postpartum and newborn care through the Couplet Care model. We also care for moms in 7 couplet care rooms in the NICU. Maternal care is provided for all stable postpartum patients, whether vaginal or cesarean. Neonatal care is provided to all low-risk infants, stable based on perinatal regionalization criteria, including therapies such as phototherapy, IV antibiotics, and low risk NAS support. Primary diagnoses for our antepartum population include preterm labor, premature rupture of membranes, gestational diabetes, and pregnancy-induced hypertension. The staffing mix includes Registered Nurses, Patient Care Technicians and Unit Secretaries.
Meduflex is the inpatient Float Pool at MUSC. Our primary focus is coverage for callouts and extended leaves of absence. We offer 10 different zones providing patient care for Adult and Pediatric units at all four locations downtown: University Hospital, Ashley River Tower, the Institute of Psychiatry, and Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital. Specific to the Meduflex Team, we offer a float differential based on FTE.
As a Registered Nurse I in the Adult Acute Care Zone, you will float between Cardiac, Gastrointestinal, Neurology, Transplant, Oncology, General Medical and Surgical floors in both Main Hospital and Ashley River Tower Hospital. Upon promotion to Registered Nurse II, Adult Acute Care RNs will receive additional training to care for higher-acuity patients in our Intermediate Zone.
As a Registered Nurse I in the Pediatric Acute Care Zone, you will float between the Pediatric Acute Care Units, Pediatric Oncology Unit, Pediatric Cardiac Intermediate Unit, and Neonatal ICU to provide care for up to Level 2 patients. Upon promotion to Registered Nurse II, Pediatric Acute Care RNs will receive additional training to care for higher-acuity patients in the NICU and Pediatric ICUs.
MUSC Health's mental health care teams provide comprehensive psychiatric care across various specialized units. The geriatric unit serves elderly patients with a range of mental health conditions, while the youth unit focuses on young patients requiring crisis stabilization.
Additionally, there is a dedicated area for behavioral health services for patients awaiting psychiatric consults in an emergency setting.
CSB Dpod is a 12 bay pod Emergency behavioral health area in the Emergency Department. All bays are open and single occupancy. Dpod is the behavioral health area for patients while awaiting psychiatric consults for disposition.
1 North Acute Care Unit is a 14-bed adult intensive care psychiatric unit located on the first floor of the Northside of the Institute of Psychiatry building. All patient rooms are semi-private and serve adult patients (18 years and older) admitted for acute crisis stabilization for a broad range of psychiatric disorders, including schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, bipolar disorder, borderline personality disorder, and more.
1N Addictions Unit is a 12-bed adult psychiatric unit located on the first floor of the Northside of the Institute of Psychiatry building. All patient rooms are semi-private & serve adult (18 yrs. & over) patients admitted for crisis stabilization relevant to medical substance addiction disorders (alcohol & drugs) with dual-diagnosis of other psychiatric disorders.
2N Youth Inpatient is a 28 bed Youth psych inpatient unit, located on the second floor of the Northside of the Institute of Psychiatry building. All patient rooms are semi-private and serve patients between the ages of 5-17 yrs. old admitted for brief crisis stabilization due to failed outpatient treatment, behavioral disorders, psychotic symptoms and/or risk for self-harm or harm to others.
MUSC's pediatric care teams provide specialized medical services across a range of units tailored to different age groups and medical needs. Pediatric inpatient acute care units focus on infants, toddlers, and older children with various medical and surgical conditions.
Critical care is delivered in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, Pediatric Heart Center, and Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, offering advanced support for severe health issues. 8 ACU is a 28-bed medical-surgical inpatient unit providing care for children ages 0–18, with some adult patients up to age 25. This secured unit features 28 private rooms, including 2 negative pressure isolation rooms, 4 rooms equipped with patient lifts, and 4 behavioral rooms. Eight beds are designated for our Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit. We admit patients under multiple service lines, including general pediatrics, inpatient rehabilitation, and ENT surgical services. Common medical admissions include fever, cellulitis/abscesses, respiratory illnesses, asthma, sepsis, and hyperbilirubinemia in infants. The staffing mix includes Registered Nurses, Patient Care Technicians, Youth Apprentices and Unit Secretaries
9 ACU is a 26 bed Pediatric medical Surgical unit providing care for children 0-18 years with some adult patients up to age 25, as well. The average daily census on the unit is 24 with a blend of medical and surgical diagnoses. Common patient populations are general surgery, neurosurgery, urology surgery, orthopedic surgery, endocrinology, and nephrology. 9 ACU is also the epilepsy monitoring unit at SJCH, caring for patients with seizure disorders. The secured unit is composed of all private rooms. The staffing mix includes registered nurses, patient care technicians, and unit secretaries.
The Pediatric Intensive Care Unit is a 28-bed unit providing intensive and intermediate care to children ages 0-18 from across the state of South Carolina. The unit cares for patients with a blend of medical and surgical diagnoses. Common diagnoses include, but are not limited to, respiratory compromise, trauma, post-operative surgical patients requiring immediate intensive care support, and neurology/neurosurgery. In addition to ventilatory and cardiac support, the unit provides ECMO/CRRT, renal or peritoneal dialysis, and complex supportive therapies. Pediatric Palliative care is available as needed. The staffing mix includes registered nurses, patient care technicians, and unit secretaries, with therapeutic supportive services such as respiratory therapy, pediatric dietitians, and pediatric pharmacists, who are available as needed. All PICU beds are monitored beds.

The 82-bed Neonatal Intensive Care Unit is located in our MUSC Shawn Jenkins Children's Hospital. The Neonatal ICU is the regional referral center for this area, providing care to premature and sick neonates. The Neonatal ICU provides medical and surgical care for the most common diagnoses, including prematurity, respiratory distress, and neonatal surgical conditions. In addition to respiratory and nutritional support, the NICU provides ECMO/CRRT and surgical support. Pediatric Palliative care is available as needed. The Neonatal ICU is located on the 5th floor of the MUSC Shawn Jenkins Hospital. The Neonatal ICU also supports an infant home monitoring program for infants requiring monitoring upon discharge. All Neonatal ICU beds are monitored beds. Under general supervision, the Registered Nurse II provides individualized, goal-directed patient care to families and patients at the competent level utilizing the principles and practices of the nursing process; delivers safe and effective care and interacts with other members of the health care team to achieve desired results.
SJCH Cancer and Blood Disorders is a 16 bed Pediatric Hematology, Oncology, and Bone Marrow Transplantation and Cellular Therapy (BMTCT) unit providing intermediate level care for patients age 0-25 years. It is the only program in the state of South Carolina to provide BMTCT to pediatric patients. The average daily census on the unit is 15 patients, with the most common patients being those with cancer, sickle cell anemia, or receiving BMTCT. The staffing mix includes Registered Nurses, Patient Care Technicians, and unit secretaries. The Registered Nurses become certified in administration of chemotherapy and BMTCT products when eligible. In addition to administration of chemotherapy, pain management during sickle cell crisis, and BMTCT, one of the unique services provided is gene therapy, a novel treatment for patients with sickle cell anemia. Pediatric palliative care and respiratory therapy are available as needed. The unit is secured and composed of all private rooms.

The MUSC Cardiac Cath Lab consists of five state-of-the-art labs plus one hybrid OR supported by a Prep and Recovery unit. We provide advanced cardiac catheterization care for heart attack, stroke and coronary artery disease, including chronic total coronary occlusion, alcohol septal ablation, patent foramen ovale and atrial septal defect. We continue to expand our Heart Failure program and are the largest transplant facility in South Carolina. MUSC Health also offers more treatment options for heart valve disease than any other center in the state, including minimally invasive TAVR, MitraClip and TEER approaches.
Chuck Dawley OR is an adult outpatient surgical facility designed with 2 operating rooms and 1 laser room to accommodate care for Ophthalmology patients. Our facility is open Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. and closed on major holidays. Nurses in the unit work closely with surgical providers and anesthesia partners to deliver both professional and exceptional care for patients and their families. Our nurses are BLS certified and trained in both the R.N. circulating and scrub nurse roles. Chuck Dawley Ambulatory Surgery Facility is a Magnet-designated, smoke-free facility and is Joint Commission Accredited.
The Main Operating Room is within a level-one academic trauma center. There are 21 OR suites that cover all surgical specialties, including Trauma, Transplant, Ortho, Neuro, ENT, GU-GYN, Robotics and Burns. The nursing teams consist of 75% Registered Nurses and 25% Certified Surgical Technologist/Licensed Practical Nurses. R.N.’s are trained to both scrub and circulate surgical procedures. The Main OR is a busy and dynamic nurse-driven, Magnet-designated department that provides cutting-edge technology to the citizens of SC.
Rutledge Tower Operating Room has 9 OR suites for both adult outpatient and inpatient surgical procedures and provides service to a multitude of specialties to include ENT, Oral Surgery, Adult Dentistry, Ophthalmology, Plastics, Gynecology, Urology, Pain Management, Orthopedics, Surgical Oncology, Endocrine, Colorectal, Robotics, and Minimally invasive surgeries. RT OR is open Monday -Friday until 5:00 or 7:00pm and is currently closed on weekends and major holidays. Our orientation includes training for both the circulator and scrub roles. We are a 100% bovie smoke free facility that is highly innovative and provides excellence in nursing care.
The Rutledge Tower (RT) Preop/Holding room consists of 12 preop bays that serve 9 operating rooms. We have a diverse adult patient population with numerous specialties. Our RNs & LPNs prep patients for surgery who often come from home (outpatients), a facility, the inpatient floor, and/or the Emergency department. Our Holding RNs/LPNs should be able to multi-task in a fast-paced environment as, well as possess strong critical thinking, IV, & communication skills. Our staff works closely with the anesthesia team, surgeons & residents, OR nurses, & the PACU staff, to prepare patients for their procedure. The RT Preop/Holding room is open Monday - Friday, 0530-1700 (we are currently closed on weekends & major holidays). BLS & ACLS are required.

West Campus OR is part of the West Ashley Ambulatory Surgery Facility. The facility has 5-Orthpedic OR suites, 3-endoscopy procedure rooms, a Vascular Interventional suite (VIR) and an outpatient Cath/EP Lab. This position is for the OR and our surgeries are Orthopedic/Total Joints/Sports Medicine/Spine cases. The patient population is primarily adult with some procedures done on teenage athletes. Although we also hire Certified Scrub Techs., RNs hired into the OR are trained to both scrub and circulate. All surgery is performed on an outpatient basis between the hours of 7am - 5pm, no weekends or holidays. The ambulatory surgery facilities are part of the MUSC Magnet designation and are Joint Commission Accredited in surgery; we also have advanced certification in Shoulder/Hip/Knee Total Joints at the Main Hospital and West Campus. West Campus has also been nationally recognized by AORN as a Center of Excellence in surgical safety for smoke evacuation.
16 bed preop unit in the Main Hospital. Nurses prep patients for ambulatory or inpatient surgeries performed in the Main OR. Nurses should have strong critical thinking skills along with strong IV skills. Nurses work closely with the Main OR staff and surgical teams to prepare patients for their procedure. 2years of prior floor nursing experience preferred. Main Holding/Preop is open Mon-Sun 0530-1900. ACLS and PALS required before end of orientation.
Surgical Observation Unit is a 21 bed unit that cares for Phase2 and post-op patients from the Main PACU and OR. These patients are med-surg level of care for surgeries including General Surgery, Orthopedic, Gynecology, Urology and Endocrinology. Each will plan to discharge same day or within 23 hours post-op. Nurses are responsible for Phase2 anesthesia recoveries and surgery specific care to include surgery specific discharge instructions. ACLS required before end of orientation.

PACU call teams are in place Friday PM-Monday AM for add-on cases on the weekends. The clinical programs that service ART are recognized for excellence in cardiac surgery, thoracic surgery, vascular surgery, transplant surgery, as well as general and GI surgery and is nationally recognized for management of chronic pancreatitis, and bariatric surgery. ART PACU focuses care on post-operative recovery from anesthesia including ERAS, pain, respiratory status, hemodynamic stability, and prevention of post-operative complications. The ART PACU team strives to provide the highest quality patient-family centered care and service. In addition, ART recently opened Phase 2 PACU which has 7 additional bays for a total of 19 PACU bays.
PACU in Main Hospital is a 20-bed unit with 24/7/365 operation care for patients of all ages and all disease process. Most surgeries include but not limited to Ortho, Transplant, Neuro, Spine, ENT, GYN, Trauma, Urology and multiple other specialties. The unit provides care for both ambulatory surgery patients as well as inpatients. The unit often accommodates ICU crash patients and med-surg patients waiting for beds after surgery. Often these units only hire nurses with 2 years of critical care or level 1 ED experience, but willing to train enthusiastic and motivated med-surg and new graduate nurses. ACLS and PALS required before end of orientation.

Ashley River Tower Endoscopy is a procedural department that serves both inpatient and outpatient procedures. We offer a wide variety of GI procedures, both general and therapeutic procedures, as well as motility specialty procedures, supporting adult, and occasional pediatric, patients. Procedures provided by the unit include, but are not limited to: screening colonoscopy, EGD, dilation for strictures, feeding tube placement, ERCP, ESWL, POEM, and EUS. Endoscopy also includes two prep and recovery units, composed of 23 P/R bays. The general and therapeutic RN’s take call, supporting urgent and emergent endoscopy procedures, and have a team of GI Techs that reprocess the endoscopes with a process called High Level Disinfection. We mostly operate Monday-Friday 8am-5pm, with the call team supporting the urgent cases outside of normal business hours.
SJCH Pediatric Endoscopy is a procedural department that serves both inpatient and outpatient procedures. We offer a wide variety of pediatric GI procedures, both general and therapeutic procedures, as well as motility specialty procedures. Procedures provided by the unit include, but are not limited to screening colonoscopy, EGD, dilation for strictures, feeding tube placement, motility, and advanced Endoscopy. The Endo team consists of RN’s and GI Techs who assist with procedures and clean scopes.
HVC Prep & Recovery (P&R) consists of 32 bays located on 3rd Heart & Vascular Center in the Ashley River Tower (ART). P&R supports inpatient and outpatient procedures in the following areas; Vascular Interventional Radiology (VIR), Electrophysiology Lab (EP), Adult Cardiac Cath Lab and ECHO Lab. Procedural operations are Monday morning at 6am, through Friday at 9pm. The team works rotating shifts, 6a-6p, 7a-7p and/or 9a-9p and collaborate with Registered Nurses and Heart & Vascular Technicians to oversee standardized prep and recovery tactics. Required certifications depending on licensure are; ACLS/BLS certification, completion of EKG course and LVAD class.
Our Prep and Recovery areas include 18 beds across two locations, serving both outpatients and inpatients. We prepare and recover neurosurgery patients undergoing procedures such as aneurysm repair, AV malformation treatment, and embolizations. These patients require focused postoperative neurological monitoring, with some discharged home and others transitioning to the ICU or the neuro stepdown unit for continued care.
We also support radiology patients receiving sedation for procedures such as MRIs, lumbar punctures, ultrasound-guided kidney biopsies, and Gamma Knife radiation. In addition, we prep and recover pediatric patients undergoing Neuroendovascular or radiology procedures in the Main Hospital.
You will collaborate with an interdisciplinary team—including neurosurgeons, neuroradiologists, anesthesiologists, nephrologists, certified registered nurse anesthetists, physician assistants, patient care technicians, and nurse practitioners.

Our 20-bed VIR Prep and Recovery Unit, located in the Main Hospital Extension, supports both inpatients and outpatients. Nurses in this area prepare and recover patients undergoing a wide range of interventional radiology procedures, including port placements, nephrostomy tube insertions or exchanges, kyphoplasty, liver and kidney biopsies, TIPS, and other specialized radiologic interventions. The team also provides prep and recovery care for bronchoscopies, upper and lower endoscopies for inpatients in the Main Hospital, and vascular access procedures.

The MUSC Orangeburg Stepdown is a 15-bed adult intermediate care unit treating acutely ill patients with medical problems related to renal disease, cardiac disease, respiratory disease, and other medical issues including post-surgical and dialysis patients. The stepdown unit requires BLS upon hire and ACLS within 6 months of hire. Nurses on this unit manage medication drips such as insulin and cardiac medications per physician orders. NIHSS certification required after hire.
