Adult Care Teams

Adult Inpatient Acute Care

5E is a 19-bed acute cardiac care unit with a 1:4 patient ratio. The patient population served includes patients with heart and lung transplants, congestive heart failure, congenital heart defects, coronary artery disease, rhythm disturbances, AICD management, sudden cardiac death, cardiac conduction abnormalities, pacemaker management, abdominal aortic aneurysm, LVADs (ventricular assist devices), interventional valve replacement, pulmonary hypertension and pulmonary artery management devices. In addition, the patient population also includes those who have received vascular surgical procedures. 

Main Hospital 5W (MH5W) is a 16-bed acute care unit that specializes in providing care for medical surgical patients, including transplant recipients in pre- and post-operative settings, as well as patients with liver cirrhosis, hepatitis, acute kidney injury, and sickle cell disease. Our nurses and patient care technicians collaborate closely with our specialty and medical teams to deliver high-quality, evidence-based care to patients and their families. MH5W also offers nurses opportunities for ongoing transplant-specific education and highly encourages specialty certification in areas such as palliative care, wound care, and med/surg.

On ART 6 East, we believe in developing nurses through education, mentorship, and experience to provide safe, holistic care to the patients we serve. ART 6 East is a surgical acute care unit located in the Ashley River Tower (ART) at the Medical University of South Carolina. Our nurses enjoy an educational, collaborative work environment with all members of the care team, including physicians, respiratory therapists, and other ancillary staff. ART 6 East has an active shared governance group that has a voice in unit decisions. You will also enjoy the benefits provided by being part of Magnet organization, which also includes the nurse residency program for all new graduate nurses. Our unit also works closely with our MSICU and rapid response teams through the use of the Modified Early Warning Score (MEWS) to monitor patients for changes in condition, providing an introduction to critical care.  ART 6 East cares for patients recovering from Whipple’s, TIPS, splenectomies, cholecystectomies, Nissen Fundoplications, colectomies, cardiology, and general medicine patients.

Main 6E Transplant is a 22-bed adult inpatient unit, specializing in the treatment of fresh post-operative solid organ abdominal transplants. The unit offers two distinct levels of care to adult patients according to their acuity: 1) Intermediate/ Stepdown Care and 2) Acute inpatient care as they treat pre- and post-kidney, liver, and kidney/pancreas transplants. The Intermediate Care beds closely monitor transplant patients with arterial lines and specialized drips. The transplant unit requires all nurses to become ACLS certified and to become a resource in peritoneal dialysis within the first 6 months of hire. The patient population on MH6E includes a wide variety of other Acute Care patients. MH6E offers opportunities for nurses to obtain ongoing transplant-specific education and highly encourages specialty certification in several areas, including transplant and wound care.  

Ashley River Tower (ART) 6 West is a 21-bed acute care unit providing care to patients with various diagnoses. 6 West (6W) commonly cares for patients admitted on general medicine services, plus specialty services, including GI surgery, surgical oncology, vascular surgery, and plastic surgery. Additionally, 6W cares for patients admitted on cardiology, CT surgery, hematology/oncology, and/or other services as appropriate based on patient needs. The nursing staff on ART 6W is trained to utilize various devices, tools, and techniques to assist in delivering safe patient care. Nurse: patient ratios range from 1:4-1:5. Our nurses enjoy an educational, collaborative work environment with all members of the care team, including physicians, respiratory therapists, physical therapists, and other ancillary staff. This highly connected team is driven, innovative, supportive, and teamwork-centered.  

7A Family Medicine: Hospital Extension U07A is an 18 Bed Medical Surgical Unit at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, South Carolina. Family medicine is similar to general medicine; we see patients over their lifetimes, past eighteen years of age, often with chronic illnesses. With this, we see more Medical patients, but we have surgical patients placed on the floor in smaller numbers. Our nurses work collaboratively with the Physician team, Respiratory Therapist, Physical Therapist, Occupational Therapists, Speech Pathologist, Case Managers, and Social Workers to customize care for patients. These patients tend to range from moderate to high acuity. 7A offers opportunities for nurses to obtain Med-Surg certification.

As an 18-bed Medical Acute Care Unit, 7B offers excellent opportunities to develop a strong foundation as you begin your nursing career. On our unit, we specialize in Family Medicine and Internal Medicine patients, including individuals with kidney disease, sepsis, pulmonary illnesses, sickle cell disease, and dermatological disorders. Our nurses work closely with the interprofessional team of physicians, respiratory therapists, pharmacists, and physical therapists to provide high-quality care and achieve safe outcomes for a diverse patient population. New graduate nurses begin with a ten-week orientation process, followed by the opportunity to pursue additional education in palliative care, wound care, and leadership development. 7East Medical Acute Care Unit is a 26 bed inpatient Medical-Surgical Unit which provides care to an adult and geriatric patient population. 7East is identified as the designated research floor for the organization with national recognition for the Liberate Pulmonary Study. Other research studies, including Alzheimer’s, Renew, Melanoma, Plexifor, IV Carbamazepine, and Yohimbine, are performed regularly. 7East provides holistic care for patients with internal medicine issues of an acute and chronic nature, including but not limited to Sickle Cell Anemia, Cystic Fibrosis, Pulmonary Hypertension, Diabetes, COPD, Lupus, Sepsis, and Peritoneal Dialysis.

ART 7 East is a 19-bed unit that specializes in the care and treatment of adult oncology and medical-surgical patients. The unit manages complex cancer diagnoses, which include hematologic malignancies and solid organ tumors. The unit administers and monitors patients receiving high-risk chemotherapy and immunotherapy and those enrolled in clinical trials. The unit also manages the side effects related to these cancer treatments. The patient population on ART 7 East also includes a vast array of medical-surgical patients. These patients tend to range from moderate to high acuity. ART 7 East requires all nurses to complete a National Cancer Institute Collaborative Systemic Therapies Course within the first year of employment in order to become chemotherapy competent. We also offer opportunities for nurses to obtain the required ongoing cancer-specific education. ART7E highly encourages a specialty certification in several areas, including oncology, med/surg, and palliative care.

8 West is a 24-bed inpatient mixed Neuroscience unit for adult and geriatric patients located in the West wing on the 8th floor of the main hospital. All patient rooms are private. The floor manages a variety of adult Neuroscience Acute Care patients with a focus on Neurosurgical patients, including spine surgery, brain tumor resections, and surgical stroke patients, and supports the Comprehensive Spine Center program. The mixed patient population provides a unique opportunity to learn about a variety of neurosurgical interventions in addition to general neurology/medical/surgical patients. 8W also supports our sister units and cares for the overflow of Parkinson's, multiple sclerosis, and neuromuscular diseases. 8W nurses are supported and encouraged to obtain a certification when eligible.

9 West is a 23-bed inpatient General Neurology/Medical Stroke/Epilepsy Monitoring Unit for adult and geriatric patients located in the West Wing on the ninth floor of the main hospital. All patient rooms are private, with one room designated as a reverse airflow room.  Nine rooms are hard-wired to accommodate continuous epilepsy monitoring, a program unique to 9 West. The floor also manages Medical Stroke patients and general neurology patients, including diagnoses such as Parkinson's, multiple sclerosis, neuromuscular diseases, seizures and strokes managed medically. 9 West supports Comprehensive Spine Center and Comprehensive Epilepsy Center programs and accreditation. We support our sister units and care for the overflow of neurosurgical patients and spine surgeries as well.

Located on the top floor of the Main Hospital, 10 West is an acute care unit that encourages integrity, teamwork, and professional development. As a 21-bed unit, we accept a range of patients, including those involved in car accidents, assaults, and traumatic falls. This high-intensity population is accompanied by elective spine surgeries and overflows from the Emergency Department and Post Anesthesia Care Unit. While technically an acute care unit, our acuity level often feels like intermediate care. The group of strong, supportive leaders and kind, welcoming staff make the most demanding days possible. MUSC’s Orthopedic Unit is located on 10 East in the Main Hospital in beautiful downtown Charleston. 10 East is a 20-bed acute care, post-operative unit specializing in Orthopedic and Urology surgeries. Our patients seek us out for our expertise in adult reconstruction, total joint replacement, ortho trauma, ortho oncology, and urologic procedures. MUSC’s Joint Replacement program has received the Join Commission Advanced Certification for Total Hip and Knee Replacement and the Joint Commission Gold Seal Certification for Total Shoulder Replacement. The Orthopedic unit was awarded the NAON Nursing Excellence (ONE) Award, acknowledging our commitment to professionalism in nursing practice through exemplary care for patients and achievement of quality outcomes. Adult Inpatient Intermediate Care

3W Cardiology is a 20-bed acute care nursing unit that provides care to all Interventional Cardiovascular patients and general Cardiology patients. On the procedural side, we care for Left and Right heart catheterizations, ablations, pacemakers and defibrillator insertions. We also specialize in care for Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR) patients. We also care for heart failure patients and are the secondary unit for the CT Surgery patient population.

6W Burn Trauma Stepdown Unit is a 24-bed Stepdown Unit at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston. 6W is a unique unit at MUSC and within the state as the only Burn Stepdown unit. All 6W’s rooms are monitored with 8 rooms being ventilator compatible. All nurses are trained in complex burn dressing changes and supported by Burn Team members and Free-Floating Charge Nurse. Robust unit leadership supports the onboarding of new graduate nurses and monitors quality metrics. Our nurses work collaboratively with the Burn Physician Team, Trauma Physician Team, Respiratory Therapists, Physical Therapists, Occupational Therapists, Speech Pathologists, Case Managers, and Social Workers to customize care for patients. 6W offers opportunities for nurses to obtain Med-Surg, Burn, and Trauma certifications.

Located at MUSC Health’s extension hospital, 8D EH is a 13-bed inpatient adult acute med-surg unit open 24/7. 8D EH is designed to accommodate medical and surgical patients from private hospitalists or family medicine service lines. The unit serves direct and new admissions coming into the hospital from the ED, post recovery or other inpatient units under the medical-surgical service lines with a variety of diagnoses. 8D EH is a smaller unit, supportive environment with lots of clinical ladder and leadership opportunities for new nurses! 

Located at MUSC Health’s main hospital, 9 Center is a nine-bed ER overflow, Admission and Holding unit open 24/7. 9Center is designed to help alleviate boarding in the Emergency Departments. The unit serves direct and new admissions coming into the hospital from the ED under the medical-surgical service lines with a variety of diagnoses. 9 Center is designated and designed for short-term treatment, observation until discharge, or next-day transfer to inpatient units.

9 East is a 23-bed Neuroscience step-down unit caring for adult Stroke, Neurosurgery, and Neurology high acuity patients. Nurses manage arterial lines and external ventricular drains, measure ICPs and lumbar drains, and titrate high-alert drips. The patient population includes Ischemic strokes and hemorrhagic strokes, tumor resections, spine/neurosurgeries, neuroendovascular interventions and epilepsy. Nurses receive NIHS, ACLS, and EKG certification during orientation, and Stroke Certification is a unit Magnet goal. Staffing ratios are 1:3 or 1:4 based on acuity. 9 East is a fast-paced, highly functioning and engaged team. MUSC offers student loan repayment and tuition assistance, succession planning with many professional growth opportunities, orientation is individualized meeting often, has an Accredited Nurse Residency Program and self-scheduling platform. The type of Care Team Member who would be a good fit for our unit is a professional with a strong work ethic looking to join a team promoting the best patient outcomes.

7West Surgical Oncology is a high acuity 24-bed adult inpatient unit specializing in gynecology/oncology and benign gynecology, head/neck oncology and benign ENT. 7 West also provides care for a variety of other medical/surgical patient populations, including but not limited to the management of behavioral, respiratory, endocrine, GI, and trauma patients. The unit manages patients receiving inpatient chemotherapy, radiation, leech therapy, TPN and enteral nutrition. This unit cares for complex microvascular head and neck flap patients, which includes complex wound management, tracheostomy and laryngectomy patient care. 7W also manages palliative and hospice patient populations at varying stages of their disease progression to include aggressive pain management. Other skills include heparin and insulin GTTs, PCA, epidural, and a variety of drain types. Because of the diversity of populations cared for in this unit, once hired 7 West offers disease specific supplemental training, and offers opportunities for their nurses to obtain specialty certification in a number of areas to include oncology, head/neck, med/surg, and palliative care.

The ART 7 West HOPE (Hematology Oncology Protective Environment) unit is a 23-bed adult inpatient unit specializing in treating Adult Bone Marrow Transplant, CAR-T Cell Therapy, and Malignant Hematology patients. The unit manages patients receiving chemotherapy, immunotherapy, transplantation, and those enrolled in clinical trials. The HOPE Unit requires all nurses to complete a National Cancer Institute Collaborative Systemic Therapies Course within the first year of employment in order to become chemotherapy competent. ART7W also offers opportunities for nurses to obtain required ongoing cancer-specific education and highly encourages a specialty certification in a number of areas including oncology, bone marrow transplant, med/surg, and palliative care.

Adult Inpatient Critical Care

MSICU is an 18-bed unit that provides care to adult patients covering various medical and surgical patient populations. The various medical diagnoses include multi-system organ failure, hematology/oncology, pulmonary hypertension, sepsis, respiratory failure, and post-lung transplants. This intensive care unit also has a sub-specialty in digestive disease and cares for patients with renal, endocrine, liver disease, GI surgery, GI hemorrhage, pancreatitis, and islet cell transplants. In addition, MSICU cares for obstetric patients requiring ICU level of care. Staff are trained in advanced hemodynamic monitoring, continuous renal replacement therapy, ECMO, pulmonary artery catheters, intra-aortic balloon pumps, impella CP/5.5, and aggressive ventilator therapy. The MSICU has earned the Silver Beacon Award. 

The Neuroscience Intensive Care Unit is a 23-bed unit located on the 8th floor of the Main hospital. It is designed and organized to meet the special needs of patients with acute neurosurgical and neurological illnesses and injuries. All neurological patients will be co-managed by the neurocritical care providers and the neurosurgery or neurology faculty. The age groups served are geriatric, adults, and adolescents fifteen years or older. 

5 West, Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (CICU) is a 23-bed mixed acuity Heart and Vascular unit. Twelve of our patient rooms are dedicated to service ICU level patients, including management of swan Ganz catheters, intra-aortic balloon pumps, Impellas, ventilated patients, and CRRT. The remaining 11 beds serve intermediate-level patients. The nurses on this unit can manage a-lines, lumbar drains, and titrate cardiac drips on the intermediate care patients. Our patient population consists primarily of Advance Heart Failure, Cardiology, and Vascular surgery patients. This unit functions as the step-down unit for the Ashley River Tower, offering a higher level of care for the many specialties in this building. Nurse: patient ratios range from 1:1-1:3 based on patient acuity. This highly engaged team is innovative, dynamic, and fast-paced.

The Specialty Medical ICU is an 18-bed ICU located on a newly renovated unit in the historic Main Hospital. The patient population consists of a mixed population including pulmonary, renal, hepatic, GI bleeds, endocrine, overdose, and infectious diseases (including COVID). The unit is also the designated Sharing Hope organ donor unit. The team thrives on great communication, collaboration, and a culture that provides safe, high-quality, patient- and family-centered care. The variety of patients on the unit keeps our work fresh and new. Working in this unit allows the R.N. to use a wide variety of both clinical and critical thinking skills.

MUSC’s Specialty Emergency Department is located in downtown Charleston's state-of-the-art Ashley River Tower. We utilize 21 private treatment spaces to serve the highly specialized needs of our patients. The defining characteristics of our staff are teamwork and innovation. We work in a fast-paced environment, taking care of patients whose acuity is almost double the national average. We specialize in Cardiothoracic Surgery, Left Ventricular Assistive Devices, Chest Pain, Vascular Surgery, Interventional Cardiology, GI Surgery, Hematology/Oncology, and Women’s Services. The MUSC Adult Emergency Department is a Level 1 Trauma Center with 42 treatment areas including four trauma bays. We are a dynamic and fast-paced department that oversees more than 50,000 cases annually. With a dedicated CT scanner and an X-ray machine within our unit, we have the ability to quickly diagnose and treat our patients. We are also a Comprehensive Stroke Center, Accredited Chest Pain Center, and the Designated Burn Center for the region. With MUSC rapidly expanding across the state, we proudly serve the surrounding communities for all their acute health care needs. As a Registered Nurse within our department, you will have the opportunity to work alongside a diverse health care team that utilizes research and best practice to provide the utmost care for our patients. Women's Health

MUSC delivers approximately 3,200 patients annually. Labor and Delivery consists of 17 LDRs, 2 ORs, 3 PACU beds, and 4 Triage rooms. In addition to vaginal and cesarean deliveries, L&D provides operative services such as cerclage and tubal ligation. Medical support includes management of gestational/chronic diabetes, hypertension, and other high-risk antepartum conditions, including acceptance of high-risk maternal transports from the region. Wireless Electronic Fetal Monitoring is available in all beds. Perinatal palliative care is available as needed. The staffing mix includes Registered Nurses, Licensed Practical Nurses, Certified Surgical Technicians, and Unit Secretaries.

Meduflex Float Pool

 
Meduflex is the inpatient Float Pool at MUSC, providing coverage for callouts and extended leaves of absence. Registered Nurses for Adult Acute Care, Pediatric Acute Care, and Adult Critical Care deliver patient care across various units at University Hospital, Ashley River Tower, and Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital.

This role offers diverse experiences in different clinical environments, ensuring comprehensive and adaptable nursing care.

Meduflex/Float Pool

 Meduflex is the inpatient Float Pool at MUSC. Our primary focus is coverage for callouts and extended leaves of absence. We offer 10 different zones that provide patient care for adult and pediatric units at all four locations downtown: University Hospital, Ashley River Tower, the Institute of Psychiatry, and Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital.

As a Registered Nurse I in the Adult Acute Care Zone, you will float between Cardiac, Gastrointestinal, Neurology, Transplant, Oncology, General Medical and Surgical floors in both Main Hospital and Ashley River Tower Hospital. We do offer an additional track for our Adult Acute Care candidates if you have interest in higher acuity acute care patients in our intermediate zone. The Adult Intermediate Track would entail additional orientation after completion of the Adult Acute Care orientation. Specific to the Meduflex Team, we offer a float differential based on FTE.

 Meduflex is the inpatient Float Pool at MUSC. Our primary focus is coverage for callouts and extended leaves of absence. We offer 10 different zones that provide patient care for adult and pediatric units at all four locations downtown: University Hospital, Ashley River Tower, the Institute of Psychiatry, and Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital.

As a Registered Nurse I in the Pediatric Acute Care Zone, you will float between the Pediatric Acute Care Units, Pediatric Oncology Unit, Pediatric Cardiac Intermediate Unit, and Neonatal ICU to provide care for up to Level 2 patients. If needed, you may float to the ICUs to provide care for intermediate patients at Shawn Jenkins Children's Hospital. Specific to the Meduflex Team, we offer a float differential based on FTE.

Meduflex is the inpatient Float Pool at MUSC. Our primary focus is coverage for callouts and extended leaves of absence. We offer 10 different zones that provide patient care for adult and pediatric units at all four locations downtown: University Hospital, Ashley River Tower, the Institute of Psychiatry, and Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital.

As a Registered Nurse I in the Maternal Infant Zone, you will float between the Mother-Baby unit and Neonatal ICU to take up to Level 2 patients. Shawn Jenkins Children's Hospital. Specific to the Meduflex Team, we offer a float differential based on FTE.

Mental Health Care Teams

 
MUSC Health's mental health care teams provide comprehensive psychiatric care across various specialized units. The geriatric unit serves elderly patients with a range of mental health conditions, while the youth unit focuses on young patients requiring crisis stabilization.

Additionally, there is a dedicated area for behavioral health services for patients awaiting psychiatric consults in an emergency setting.

Mental Health

CSB Dpod is a 12-bay pod located adjacent to the Main Emergency Department on the first floor of the Clinical Science Building. All bays are open and single-occupancy. Dpod is the behavioral health area for patients awaiting psychiatric consults for disposition.

1 North Acute Care Unit is a 14-bed adult intensive care psychiatric unit located on the first floor of the Northside of the Institute of Psychiatry building. All patient rooms are semi-private and serve adult patients (18 years and older) admitted for acute crisis stabilization for a broad range of psychiatric disorders, including schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, bipolar disorder, borderline personality disorder, and more.

1N Addictions Unit is a 12-bed adult psychiatric unit located on the first floor of the Northside of the Institute of Psychiatry building. All patient rooms are semi-private & serve adult (18 yrs. & over) patients admitted for crisis stabilization relevant to medical substance addiction disorders (alcohol & drugs) with dual-diagnosis of other psychiatric disorders.

2N Youth Inpatient is a 28 bed Youth psych inpatient unit, located on the second floor of the Northside of the Institute of Psychiatry building. All patient rooms are semi-private and serve patients between the ages of 5-17 yrs. old admitted for brief crisis stabilization due to failed outpatient treatment, behavioral disorders, psychotic symptoms and/or risk for self-harm or harm to others.

Pediatric Care Teams

 
MUSC's pediatric care teams provide specialized medical services across a range of units tailored to different age groups and medical needs. Pediatric inpatient acute care units focus on infants, toddlers, and older children with various medical and surgical conditions.

Critical care is delivered in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, Pediatric Heart Center, and Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, offering advanced support for severe health issues. Additionally, the Pediatric Hematology/Oncology unit provides care for children with cancer and blood disorders, ensuring comprehensive support across all pediatric needs.

Pediatric Inpatient Acute Care

8 ACU is an 18-bed General Pediatric Infant/Toddler unit primarily providing care for children aged 0-6 years. The average daily census on the unit is 14 patients, with a blend of medical and surgical diagnoses. 9 ACU is a 25-bed General Pediatric Medical Surgical unit primarily providing care for children aged 6-18 years. The average daily census on the unit is 16 patients, with a blend of medical and surgical diagnoses. Common diagnoses include but are not limited to, Orthopedic Surgery, Neurology/Neurosurgery, Ear, Nose, and Throat Surgery and Respiratory Illnesses, including Asthma. The secured unit is composed of all private rooms. The staffing mix includes Registered Nurses, Patient Care Technicians, and Unit Secretaries.

Pediatric Inpatient Critical Care

The Pediatric Intensive Care Unit is a 28-bed unit providing intensive and intermediate care to children ages 0-18 from across the state of South Carolina. The unit cares for patients with a blend of medical and surgical diagnoses. Common diagnoses include, but are not limited to, respiratory compromise, trauma, post-operative surgical patients requiring immediate intensive care support, and neurology/neurosurgery. In addition to ventilatory and cardiac support, the unit provides ECMO/CRRT, renal or peritoneal dialysis, and complex supportive therapies. Pediatric Palliative care is available as needed. The staffing mix includes registered nurses, patient care technicians, and unit secretaries, with therapeutic supportive services such as respiratory therapy, pediatric dietitians, and pediatric pharmacists, who are available as needed. All PICU beds are monitored beds.

The Pediatric Heart Center unit is a 29-bed Beacon Award-Winning unit and is the referral center for all major pediatric cardiac surgery in South Carolina. The average Daily Census on the unit is 26, with a blend of cardiac surgical and medical diagnoses. The Heart Center cares for patients with congenital heart disease of any age based on care needs. Common procedures associated with this unit's care include cardiac surgery, Ventricular Assist Devices, Heart Transplant, cardiac catheterization, and all medical diagnoses associated with cardiac care for the children in South Carolina. In addition to ventilatory and cardiac support, the unit provides ECMO/CRRT and additional complex supportive therapies. Pediatric palliative care is available as needed. The staffing mix includes Registered Nurses, Patient Care Technicians, and Unit Secretaries with ancillary supportive services such as Respiratory Therapy, Pediatric Dietitians, and Pediatric pharmacists available as needed. All beds are monitored beds.

The 82-bed Neonatal Intensive Care Unit is located in our MUSC Shawn Jenkins Children's Hospital. The Neonatal ICU is the regional referral center for this area, providing care to premature and sick neonates. The Neonatal ICU provides medical and surgical care for the most common diagnoses, including prematurity, respiratory distress, and neonatal surgical conditions. In addition to respiratory and nutritional support, the NICU provides ECMO/CRRT and surgical support. Pediatric Palliative care is available as needed. The Neonatal ICU is located on the 5th floor of the MUSC Shawn Jenkins Hospital. The Neonatal ICU also supports an infant home monitoring program for infants requiring monitoring upon discharge. All Neonatal ICU beds are monitored beds. Under general supervision, the Registered Nurse II provides individualized, goal-directed patient care to families and patients at the competent level utilizing the principles and practices of the nursing process; delivers safe and effective care and interacts with other members of the health care team to achieve desired results.

SJCH Cancer Center is an 18-bed Pediatric Hematology/Oncology unit providing intermediate care for children aged 0-18 years. The average daily census on the unit is 14 patients, with the most common diagnoses including cancer and sickle cell anemia. The staffing mix includes Registered Nurses, Patient Care Technicians, and unit secretaries. The Registered Nurses become certified in the administration of Chemotherapy when eligible. In addition to the administration of chemotherapy and pain management during a sickle cell crisis, one of the unique services provided is Bone Marrow Transfusion. Pediatric palliative care is available as needed. The secured unit is composed of all private rooms.

Perioperative Services & Procedural Areas

The MUSC Cardiac Cath Lab consists of five state-of-the-art labs plus one hybrid OR, which is supported by a Prep and Recovery unit. We provide advanced cardiac catheterization care for heart attack, stroke and coronary artery disease, including chronic total coronary occlusion. We continue to expand our Heart Failure program and are the largest transplant facility in South Carolina. MUSC Health also offers more treatment options for heart valve disease than any other center in the state, including minimally invasive TAVR, TAVI, TEER, TMVR and MitraClip approaches.

The Adult Echo Labs are located at Ashley River Tower (ART) and Main Hospital. The teams provide various procedures to all inpatients and outpatients, with emphasis on cardiology, transplant, vascular, thoracic, and oncology patients. The nurses are BLS and ACLS certified and competent in reading and performing EKG's. They perform stress testing, cardiac biopsies, catheterizations, transesophageal echoes, cardioversions, and bedside care to P&R patients. They are trained in high-level disinfection, cleaning, and processing transesophageal scopes. This position will be a rotating position to the various procedural areas of the Heart and Vascular area including the Echo, EKG, Cath & EP Labs, and Prep and Recovery area. The units are staffed at various times between 07- 19:30 M-F.

Ashley River Tower (ART) perioperative services are located on the fourth floor of the ART building. The ART operating room offers adult outpatient and inpatient surgeries through various surgical service lines, including general, plastics, oncology, cardiac, thoracic, heart and lung transplants, vascular, colorectal, bariatric, and robotics. Operations are Monday through Friday, 7:00 am to 7:00 pm. General, Vascular, and Cardiothoracic call teams are available to cover emergency cases prior to the posted scheduled times and on the weekends. There is 24-hour charge nurse coverage for after-hours and weekends. The clinical programs that service ART are recognized for excellence in cardiac surgery, thoracic surgery, vascular surgery, transplant surgery, general and GI surgery and are nationally recognized for managing chronic pancreatitis and bariatric surgery. MUSC’s heart and lung transplant program is certified by the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) and is the only heart and lung transplant program in South Carolina. There are dedicated ORs for cardiac surgery that house traditional CT surgery and heart transplants and help support the VAD program. In addition to the traditional open heart surgical procedures, MUSC’s heart and vascular center provides many innovative heart valve repair and replacement options, including the TAVR procedure. ART operating room offers many new and innovative solutions to manage and treat disease through the discipline of surgery with the highest quality of care and service.

Ashley River Tower (ART) perioperative services are located on the fourth floor of the ART building. The ART PACU is a 12-bed unit that provides post-operative care for a diverse population of adult outpatient and inpatient surgeries through various surgical service lines. These include general, plastics, oncology, cardiac, interventional cardiology, thoracic, vascular, colorectal, bariatric, and robotics. ART PACU is open 24/7 except Sunday night. The unit is closed from 7:30 p.m. to 7:30 a.m., with normal operating room hours from 7:00 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. PACU call teams are in place Friday PM-Monday AM for add-on cases on the weekends. The clinical programs that service ART are recognized for excellence in cardiac surgery, thoracic surgery, vascular surgery, transplant surgery, and general and GI surgery. They are also nationally recognized for the management of chronic pancreatitis and bariatric surgery. ART PACU focuses care on postoperative recovery from anesthesia, including ERAS, pain, respiratory status, hemodynamic stability, and prevention of postoperative complications. The ART PACU team strives to provide the highest quality patient-family centered care and service. As of May 2024, we are at the start of construction to expand our PACU and to create a 7-bed Phase II PACU to accommodate the growth within surgical services at MUSC. 

Chuck Dawley OR is an adult outpatient surgical facility designed with 2 operating rooms and 1 laser room to accommodate care for Ophthalmology patients. Our facility is open Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. and closed on major holidays. Nurses in the unit work closely with surgical providers and anesthesia partners to deliver both professional and exceptional care for patients and their families. Our nurses are BLS certified and trained in both the R.N. circulating and scrub nurse roles. Chuck Dawley Ambulatory Surgery Facility is a Magnet-designated, smoke-free facility and is Joint Commission Accredited.

The EP Lab, or Electrophysiology Lab, is a fast-paced and highly specialized cardiac procedure department specializing in treating electrical heart disease. We utilize minimally invasive procedures to treat a variety of conditions, including but not limited to Supraventricular tachycardia, ventricular tachycardia, and bradycardia. In the EP Lab, you will work with a team of professionals, including Cardiac Electrophysiologists, Anesthesiologists, Nurse Anesthetists, and Radiologic Technologists. This is a procedure area that utilizes technology and innovation to help treat the complex needs of our patient population. We have 3 invasive procedure labs and one noninvasive procedure room where staff assist physicians as a circulator, scrub nurse and procedure monitor. The ideal candidate would have a cardiac background with critical care, cardiac step-down, or emergency room experience, preferred but not required.

 The Main Operating Room is within a level-one academic trauma center. There are 21 OR suites that cover all surgical specialties, including Trauma, Transplant, Ortho, Neuro, ENT, GU-GYN, Robotics and Burns. The nursing teams consist of 75% Registered Nurses and 25% Certified Surgical Technologist/Licensed Practical Nurses. R.N.’s are trained to both scrub and circulate surgical procedures. The Main OR is a busy and dynamic nurse-driven, Magnet-designated department that provides cutting-edge technology to the citizens of SC. 

PACU in Main Hospital is a 35-bed unit with 24/7/365 operation care for patients of all ages and all disease processes. Most surgeries include but are not limited to Ortho, Transplant, Neuro, Spine, ENT, GYN, Trauma, Urology and multiple other specialties. The unit provides care for both ambulatory surgery patients as well as inpatients. The unit often accommodates ICU crash patients and med-surg patients waiting for beds after surgery. Often these units only hire nurses with 2 years of critical care or level 1 ED experience but are willing to train enthusiastic and motivated med-surg and new graduate nurses.

Neuroendovascular Surgery (NES) or Neurointerventional Radiology is extremely fast paced and highly specialized. In NES, you will work with a team of professionals, including Neurosurgeons and Neuroradiologists, Anesthesiologists, Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists and Radiology Technologists to utilize minimally invasive procedures to treat conditions of the brain and spinal cord. These include acute ischemic stroke, aneurysms, AV malformations, and vertebroplasty/kyphoplasty as an example. NES is a small team of nurses, physicians, and technologists working closely and collaboratively. The ideal candidate will have critical care or strong medical-surgical experience in an acute care setting with some neurology/neurosurgery experience.

 Summey OR platform consists of 4 OR suites and 2 minor procedure rooms, which cover surgical specialties, including ENT, Orthopedics, Ophthalmology, Dental, Urology, Plastics, General Surgery and Endoscopy. All procedures done on-site serve the pediatric population up to age 18, as well as some women's services. Nurses are trained to scrub and circulate all services. All surgery is performed on an outpatient basis between the hours of 7 a.m. - 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. The ambulatory surgery facilities are part of the MUSC Magnet designation and are Joint Commission Accredited.

Rutledge Tower Operating Room (RT OR) is designed with 9 OR suites to accommodate care for adult surgical services. Our unit is open Monday through Friday and closed on weekends and major holidays. Nurses in our unit deliver care to a diverse patient population for both inpatient and outpatient procedures. We provide services for many specialties, including ENT, Oral Surgery, Adult Dentistry, Ophthalmology, Plastics, Gynecology, Urology, Pain Management, Orthopedics, Surgical Oncology, Endocrine, Colorectal, Minimally invasive procedures, and Robotics. Nurses in the OR are taught how to provide care for both the circulating and scrub nurse roles. RT OR is an innovative, nurse-driven, smoke-free magnet facility designed to provide excellence in nursing care.  

 Rutledge Holding Unit is designed with 12 preop bays to accommodate care for our surgical patients. Nurses in the unit care for a diverse adult inpatient and outpatient population and are both BLS and ACLS certified. Our nurses possess strong critical thinking and communication skills and work closely with our PACU units, ORs, surgical providers, and anesthesia partners to deliver professional and exceptional care for our patients and their families. RT Holding is open Monday through Friday and closed on major holidays. RT Holding is both Magnet-designated and Joint Commission-accredited.  

 The MUSC Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital is a pediatric level-one academic trauma center. There are eight OR suites on level 3 and two minor ORs on level 2, which cover all pediatric surgical specialties, including Trauma, Transplant, Ortho, Neuro, ENT, GU-GYN, Ophthalmology, Plastics, Dental, General Surgery, and Pediatric hearts. Our Pediatric Heart Program is recognized as #2 in the nation in the 2024 US News and World Report. The nursing teams consist of 75% Registered Nurses and 25% Certified Surgical Technologist. RN’s are trained to both scrub and circulate surgical procedures. The SJCH OR is a busy and dynamic nurse-driven, Magnet-designated department that provides cutting-edge technology to the children of SC.

West Campus OR platform consists of 2 OR suites, 2 endoscopy procedure rooms, and 1 VIR procedure room. Surgeries performed are Orthopaedic/Sports Medicine cases. The patient population is primarily adults, with some procedures done on teenage athletes. (The endoscopy suite and VIR suite are staffed by Digestive Diseases and Interventional Radiology Staff). Nurses in the OR are trained to scrub and circulate. All surgery is performed on an outpatient basis, Monday through Friday, between the hours of 7:00 am - 5:00 pm. We are closed on weekends and major holidays. The ambulatory surgery facilities are part of the MUSC Magnet designation and are Joint Commission Accredited.

 ICU is an 11-bed adult medical intensive care unit treating critically ill patients with medical problems related to renal disease, cardiac disease, respiratory disease, and other medical issues including post-surgical and dialysis patients. ICU is the receiving unit for patients post percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). This unit requires BLS upon hire and ACLS within 3 months of hire.

The EmPATH (Emergency Psychiatric Assessment, Treatment, and Healing) Unit is a specialized hospital-based observation unit dedicated to patients with mental health emergencies. The EmPATH unit is the designated destination for medically cleared patients with need for observation and treatment while awaiting disposition. The RN will work with a multidisciplinary team of psychiatrists, nurses, social workers, and assistants in a calming environment to provide treatment to adult and adolescent patients in need of mental health care. RNs on the EmPATH unit will be cross trained to work the geriatric psych unit.

The MUSC Orangeburg BHU is a 14-bed inpatient geriatric mental health unit treating patients 60 and older. Patient rooms are a mixture of semi-private and private rooms equipped with cameras for continuous monitoring and an activity room for daytime activities. We serve geriatric patients (60 yrs. & over) with mental health diagnoses and neurocognitive disorders with behavioral disturbances.

The MUSC Orangeburg Inpatient Rehab Unit is a 24-bed acute rehabilitation unit in which nurses work closely with therapists and other disciplines to help patients achieve the best mobility and level of independence possible following strokes, traumas, surgeries, etc. Patients on this unit must be able to tolerate 3 hours of therapy per day for 5-6 days per week.

The MUSC Orangeburg Emergency Department is a Level III Trauma Center with 43 treatment areas. We are also a level II SAFE designation. We proudly serve the surrounding communities of Orangeburg, Calhoun, Bamberg, and Barnwell counties for all their acute health care needs. As a Registered Nurse within our department, you will have the opportunity to work alongside a diverse health care team that utilizes research and best practice to provide the utmost care for our patients.  

The MUSC Orangeburg Stepdown/PCU is a 42-bed adult intermediate care unit treating acutely ill patients with medical problems related to renal disease, cardiac disease, respiratory disease, and other medical issues including post-surgical and dialysis patients. The stepdown unit requires BLS upon hire and ACLS within 6 months of hire. Nurses on this unit manage medication drips such as insulin and cardiac medications per physician orders. NIHSS certification required after hire.

The Medical/Telemetry unit of MUSC Orangeburg location is a 45-bed remote telemetry, stroke-certified unit treating acutely ill patients with medical problems related to renal disease, cardiac disease, respiratory disease, and other medical issues, including post-surgical and dialysis patients. We value teamwork and strive to give the best possible care to each patient.

The MUSC Orangeburg 4 West Unit is a 40-bed medical/surgical unit primarily treating post-surgical patients but also treating acutely ill adult patients with all types of medical problems. 4 West is equipped with rooms for comfort care/hospice patients by joining 2 rooms so that family can remain with the patient during the end-of-life transition.
