Job Description Summary
The ECMO Specialist is defined by the Extracorporeal Life Support Organization as “the technical specialist trained to manage the ECMO system (blood pump, tubing, artificial oxygenator, and related equipment); as well as pertinent maintenance and emergency procedures and the clinical needs of the patient on ECMO (such as maintenance of normal acid-base balance, oxygenation and ventilation, anticoagulation) under the direction and supervision of a licensed physician. The ECMO Specialist should have a strong critical care background in neonatal, pediatric, cardiac, or adult populations. Additionally, they have attained licensure as a registered nurse, respiratory therapist, certified perfusionist, or physician. The Medical University of South Carolina has chosen to support an ECMO Specialist Team comprised of registered nurses and respiratory therapists from within the intensive care units. The ECMO Specialist is additionally responsible for collaborating with bedside RN, physicians, and other members of the multidisciplinary team to coordinate care for these very complex patients. The Registered Nurse III ECMO Specialist on the ECMO Team reports to the ECMO Nurse Manager when utilizing the ECMO pump to care for an ECMO patient. Under general supervision, the Registered Nurse III ECMO Specialist provides individualized, goal-directed patient care to families and patients at the competent level utilizing the principles and practices of the nursing process; delivers safe and effective care and interacts with other members of the health care team to achieve desired outcomes.Entity

For every 100 additional pounds, assistance will be required from another healthcare worker. 20 lbs. of force is needed to push a 400 lb. patient in a wheelchair on carpet. 25 lbs. of force is required to push a stretcher with a patient with one hand. Ability to maintain 20/40 vision, corrected, in one eye or with both eyes. (Continuous) Ability to see and recognize objects close at hand or at a distance. (Continuous) Ability to match or discriminate between colors. (Continuous) Ability to determine distance/relationship between objects; depth perception. (Continuous) Good peripheral vision capabilities. (Continuous) Ability to maintain hearing acuity, with correction.
