Job Description
Job Purpose: The Dr. Charles P. Darby Jr. Department of Pediatrics, Pediatric Emergency Division (PED) is looking for an Advanced Practice Provider (APP, NP or PA) to provide primary health care and treatment of pediatric patients. The APP will be utilized across the Pediatric Emergency Division to assist the physician staff with evaluation of acutely ill patients. Across all four sites staffed by After Hours employees/team.
The APP will be responsible for staffing Quick Care, the pediatric Emergency division's rapid access clinic. They will primarily see patients in the Pediatric Emergency Division and staff more urgent care patients when the PED is busy. The APP will also have the responsibility for care provided in MUSC Children's After Hours Care (AHC), the Division's Pediatric Urgent Care, open in the community 365 days per year. The APP will independently staff operations with onsite consultation available from the Pediatric Department faculty.
Ideal candidates will be able to thrive in the fast paced General Pediatric After Hours setting as well as in the Pediatric Emergency Division. The shifts will be balanced across venues and will be combined for the total shift expectations monthly. Both shifts include hours outside of 8am-5pm. Looking for a person to work a flexible schedule and be part of an energetic team.

Hours per week: 40
Scheduled Work Hours/Shift: 16 Shifts per 4 weeks. Made up of 12 hour shifts in the PED & 8 hour shifts in AHC

Required Training and Experience
Required Minimum Training:
Completion of an accredited Physician Assistant program and currently licensed or eligible for licensure as a Physician Assistant or completion of an accredited Nurse Practitioner Program and currently licensed or eligible for licensure as an APRN as noted below.

Primary Care Pediatric NP or Pediatric Nurse Practitioner (PCPNP/PNP): Pediatric patients (birth to age 21), stable chronic disease state management or primary care setting.
Family NP (FNP): (birth to death) Stable chronic disease state management, primary care across the lifespan.
Required Experience: Physician Assistant must have one year of experience.

Pediatric Acute Care NP (PACNP): Pediatric pts (birth to age 21), acutely ill or injured, potentially unstable or technologically dependent.
Preferred Experience: One year of Pediatric ED experience as a nurse or APP.
Degree of Supervision
Pediatric Acute Care NP (PACNP) or Physician Assistant will be assigned a Primary Supervising/Collaborating Physician employed by MUSC and will report directly to this physician.
Required Licensure, Certifications, Registrations
Currently licensed (or eligible) in the state of South Carolina as a Physician Assistant by the South Carolina Board of Medical Examiners or as a Pediatric Acute Care NP with the SC Board of Nursing. For Advanced Nurse Practitioners, ENP certification required. DHEC and DEA license applications must be submitted prior to first day.
Requires certification in Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS). If PALS is not current, provider must enroll and have received certificate by start date.
Job Duties (list job tasks)
Provides direct care to patients through the following activities:
Takes comprehensive history and performs physical examinations
Evaluates and treats on the basis of history, physical examination, radiological, laboratory, and other diagnostic test results pursuant to the practice agreement or scope of practice guideline
Performs the following therapeutic procedures in accordance with procedural privileges, skill and proficiency as approved by the Clinical Division Chief
lumbar puncture
incision and drainage
laceration repair
splint placement
nursemaid's and other joint reduction
foreign body removal
IV placement
Initiates referrals to other health care provides, and/or consults with the attending physician or the collaborating physician
Documents and bills for direct care provided
Utilizes current research and evidence-based decision-making in all clinical practice
Performs and participates in quality/performance improvement activities and clinical research
Participates in and supports accreditation, compliance, and regulatory activities of the organization
Demonstrates responsibility for professional practice through active participation in professional organizations and continuing education
Potential to precept students at MUSC enrolled as an APRN or PA student; and facilitates the learning of other new team members
APRN or PA must maintain licenses, certifications, CNEs/CMEs, etc. as required by applicable policies and state law
Participates in clinical trials sponsored by a variety of external and internal sources. May design and run studies where appropriate. Collects data for applicable databases. Assist when needed with communications and applications to the IRB.
Assess and provide educational instruction and material to meet the learning needs of patients, family members and other health care providers. Communicates advance knowledge and skills to other health professionals and the community. Participates in supervision of medical students and house staff during clinical community and practicum. Assists in coordinating learning experience. Serves as an instructor.

Continuous requirements are to perform job functions while standing, walking and sitting. Ability to bend at the waist, kneel, climb stairs, reach in all directions, fully use both hands and legs, possess good finger dexterity, perform repetitive motions with hands/wrists/elbows and shoulders, reach in all directions. Ability to be qualified physically for respirator use, initially and as required. Maintain 20/40 vision corrected, see and recognize objects close at hand and at a distance, work in a latex safe environment and work indoors. Frequently lift, lower, push and pull and/or carry objects weighing 50 lbs (+/-) unassisted, exert up to 50 lbs of force, lift from 36" to overhead 25 lbs. Infrequently work in dusty areas and confined/cramped spaces.
