Job Description Summary

The MUSC Department of Radiation Medicine has an outstanding opportunity for a part-time Advanced Practice Provider. We are looking for a dynamic individual to add to our growing Oncology practice. The successful candidate should be of high integrity, flexible, collaborative, self-motivated, detail oriented, efficient, and patient-centered. The Advanced Practice Provider will work in close collaboration with a multi-disciplinary collaborative team of radiation oncologists, nurses, radiation therapists, physicists, dosimetrist, administrators, and residents to deliver top quality patient centered care for adult and pediatric patients. The Advanced Practice Provider will work with physicians to evaluate and manage Gamma Knife and CNS (Central Nervous System) patients, those undergoing treatment, in follow up after completion of treatment. It is anticipated that two 6-hour clinic days will be spent providing clinical care at radiation oncology clinics in Charleston. Most of the clinical services will be provided in the outpatient setting, and there will be some potential for providing inpatient consultation services. Rigorous onboarding, orientation, and training will be provided.

Job Description

Fair Labor Standards Act Status: Salaried/Exempt

Hours per week:  12 hrs per week

Scheduled Work Hours/Shift: 6 hours each Monday and Wednesday; 2 hours framing procedures, 4 clinic hours for consultation and follow-up visits.

Patient Population Focus: Inpatient, Outpatient, Multi-disciplinary Clinics, Management/Consultation for Gamma Knife Treatment Procedures and Service.

Patient Population Age Range: 13 years-death

Required Minimum Training: Completion of an accredited Physician Assistant program and currently licensed or eligible for licensure as a Physician Assistant or completion of an accredited Nurse Practitioner Program and currently licensed or eligible for licensure as an APRN as noted below.

• APRN License Type/Certification:  

  • AGPNP/ANP (Adult NP): Adult pts (13 years to death), stable chronic disease state management.
  • Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP): (birth to death) Stable chronic disease state management, primary care across the lifespan.

Required Minimum Experience: Minimum of 2 years experience as a PA, APRN

Preferred Training: Completion of an accredited Physician Assistant program and currently licensed or eligible for licensure as a Physician Assistant or completion of an accredited Nurse Practitioner Program and currently licensed or eligible for licensure as an APRN as noted below.

• APRN License Type/Certification:

 o AGACNP/ACNP Adult pts (13 years to death), acutely ill or injured, potentially unstable, cancer care.

 Preferred Experience: 2 years cancer care experience as a PA, APRN

Degree of Supervision

 Advanced Practice Registered Nurse or Physician Assistant will be assigned a Primary Supervising/Collaborating Physician employed by MUSC and will report directly to this physician.

Required Licensure, Certifications, Registrations

All certifications must be current and complete prior to start date: Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS).  DHEC and DEA license applications must be started prior to first day.

Job Duties (list job tasks)

Provides direct care to patients through the following activities:

  • Decompress clinic by assisting with framing 6am-8am, seeing follow ups and consults from 8am-Noon while physicians are working on GK planning to get a patient started early in the day.  
  • Takes comprehensive history and performs physical examinations
  •  Evaluates and treats on the basis of history, physical examination, radiological, laboratory, and other diagnostic test results pursuant to the practice agreement or scope of practice guideline  
  • Initiates referrals to other health care providers, and/or consults with the attending physician or the collaborating physician
  •   Documents and bills for direct care provided  
  • Utilizes current research and evidence-based decision-making in all clinical practice
  •  Performs and participates in quality/performance improvement activities and clinical research
  •  Participates in and supports accreditation, compliance, and regulatory activities of the organization
  •  Demonstrates responsibility for professional practice through active participation in professional organizations and continuing education
  • Potential to precept students at MUSC enrolled as an advanced practice provider student; and facilitates the learning of other new team members  
  • APRN or PA must maintain licenses, certifications, CNEs/CMEs, etc. as required by applicable policies and state law  
  • Initiates consultations and monitors scheduling of patients for special tests at our Hollings Cancer clinic, Mt. Pleasant and other satellite hospital-based clinics. Identifies and records pertinent progress of patients, updating and summarizing charts, changing orders when appropriate and notifying the responsible physician of changes in the patient's condition.  
  • Upholds MUSC core values including excellent collaboration skills, professional standards of behavior, and executive presence. Develops, manages and oversees MUSC Radiation Oncology Survivorship Clinics.  

Physical Requirements: Continuous requirements are to perform job functions while standing, walking and sitting. Ability to bend at the waist, kneel, climb stairs, reach in all directions, fully use both hands and legs, possess good finger dexterity, perform repetitive motions with hands/wrists/elbows and shoulders, reach in all directions. Ability to be qualified physically for respirator use, initially and as required. Maintain 20/40 vision corrected, see and recognize objects close at hand and at a distance, work in a latex safe environment and work indoors. Frequently lift, lower, push and pull and/or carry objects weighing 50 lbs (+/) unassisted, exert up to 50 lbs of force, lift from 36" to overhead 25 lbs. Infrequently work in dusty areas and confined/cramped spaces.  

Additional Job Description

Graduation from an approved Physician Assistant program accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA) or its predecessor agencies. Must be licensed in the state of South Carolina, and certified as a Physician Assistant by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA). Current American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) certification or American Red Cross BLS for Healthcare Providers certification is required
