Job Purpose

The Athletic Training Residency will be a 12-month rotation with the Department of Orthopaedics and Physical Medicine to prepare the Athletic Trainer for a career in the physician practice setting. The Resident Athletic Trainer supports the efforts of attending physicians, advanced practice providers, and staff athletic trainers in the Department to provide high-quality care to our patients under the direction of the Athletic Training Residency Medical Director.  


Education and Work Experience

  • Current active licensure by the Department of Health and Environmental Control to practice as an Athletic Trainer. Successful completion of the National Athletic Trainer's Association Board of Certification (BOC) examination; Current active certification as an Athletic Trainer by the National Athletic Trainer's Association; Participation in continuing education (75 CEU's every 3 years).
  • Bachelor’s Degree Required
  • Master’s Degree preferred
  • 2 years of experience as an Athletic Trainer required

Licensures, Registrations, Certifications

  • By the date of hire, will hold current licensure by the Department of Health and Environmental Control to practice as an Athletic Trainer in the state of South Carolina
  • Current American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) certification or American Red Cross BLS for Healthcare Providers certification is required


Physical Requirements

Continuous requirements are to perform job functions while standing, walking, and sitting. Ability to bend at the waist, kneel, climb stairs, reach in all directions, fully use both hands and legs, possess good finger dexterity, perform repetitive motions with hands/wrists/elbows and shoulders, and reach in all directions. Ability to be qualified physically for respirator use, initially and as required. Maintain 20/40 vision corrected, see and recognize objects close at hand and at a distance, work in a latex-safe environment and work indoors. Frequently lift, lower, push and pull and/or carry objects weighing 50 lbs (+/-) unassisted, exert up to 50 lbs of force, lift from 36” to overhead 25 lbs. Infrequently work in dusty areas and confined/cramped spaces.

Job Duties (list job tasks)

  • Adherence to a 12-month residency curriculum including didactics, scholarship, research, and clinical rotation requirements.
  • Clinical Care Coordination: Manage physician clinics and associated patient volumes to enable unobstructed access and best utilize clinical resources. In collaboration with clinical staff, effectively ensure the timely flow of patients to optimize physician schedules. Coordinate and schedule appointments and referrals based on urgency and availability, as well as diagnostic testing and procedures. Review, analyze, and synthesize patient records, charts, and other pertinent information, and communicate relevant information as appropriate. Post-test exam results and discuss results with patients and other care team providers as appropriate. Help manage EPIC inbox messages and respond to patient clinical care questions.
  • Patient Care: Provides professional clinical care to assigned patients in an outpatient facility or clinic. Records patient histories, coordinates and schedules various diagnostic tests, and develops patient care plans in conjunction with other medical professionals. Assists with postoperative wound care, dressings, etc.
  • Assists physicians with examinations, procedures, and operating and monitoring medical equipment as necessary. Call in approved prescriptions and pharmacy refills. Administer treatments and tests. Observe, record, and report patient health indications, physical and psychosocial condition, and reaction to medications and treatments to supervising physician and other care-team health professionals as appropriate.
  • Clinical Care Navigation: collaborate with patient care teams across the MUSC Health System, referring physician practices, and/or all other related health care providers to effectively facilitate patient-centered orthopaedic care. This includes communicating and engaging with referring providers, physical/occupational therapists, preoperative staff, operating room staff, surgical scheduling, financial counselors, and clinic schedules for a seamless patient care experience.
  • Administrative: Complete office forms for patients (i.e. disability forms, FMLA forms, worker’s compensation). Attend in-services and meetings, and participates in committees as requested. Maintain continuing educational requirements.
  • Physician Extension: Engage patients towards adherence of individual care plans. Consult and advise patients regarding questions related to their care plan. Provide patient education as appropriate for diagnosis and treatment. Review and discuss operative information with patients. Educate patients in therapy treatment plans and review/adjust as necessary and as appropriate.

AT Residency Learning Objectives

  • Enhance clinical orthopaedic knowledge and skillset with an emphasis on musculoskeletal treatment and evaluation.  
  • Obtain proficiency in orthopaedic surgical technique including casting and bracing and become an NBCOT Certified Orthopaedic Technician.
  • Acquire knowledge of evaluation and treatment techniques of injuries within multiple orthopaedic subspecialties.
  • Gain advanced knowledge of radiographic evaluation and interpretation including X-ray, MRI, CT and ultrasound.
  • Promote and enhance the profession of athletic training through scholarship, research, and professional development conferences.
  • Develop interpersonal skills within a diverse population of patients and providers.
  • Become proficient in the utilization of electronic medical record and informatics within a large multidisciplinary hospital system.
  • Develop leadership skills and become an ambassador for athletic trainers in the physician practice setting.

  • Enhance efficiency of the orthopaedic clinical care team by creating a more comprehensive care model. 
  • Efficiently increase clinical staffing while providing an educational environment for athletic training residents.
  • Improve continuity of care and patient satisfaction scores by assisting patients and their families in the navigation of a large healthcare system.
  • Educate and develop athletic trainers into proficient musculoskeletal clinicians.
  • Become more involved in research and publication within the Department of Orthopaedics.
  • Advance the Department of Orthopaedics by developing well-rounded orthopaedic clinicians and instilling the MUSC mission of learning, discovery and healing.

Additional Job Description

Graduate of an accredited college with a BS/BA. (Masters degree in Athletic Training preferred). Certification by the Board of Certification for Athletic Trainers(BOC). Certified as an Athletic Trainer in South Carolina by DHEC. Must be able to adjust communication both verbal and non-verbal to interact appropriately and effectively with a wide variety of age groups including school age adolescents, adults and geriatrics. Weekend and evening hours to cover practices, games, tournaments, and special events.
