Job Description
The role of the LPN is to actively facilitate health care delivery in a clinical setting under the direction of a licensed healthcare provider. The LPN is responsible for assisting the provider in patient care to ensure the highest quality patient care and experience within the clinical scope of a LPN.
Education and Work Experience
High school diploma or equivalent. Completion of an accredited medical assisting program with three years of patient care. Graduation from an accredited school of practical nursing and two years of related experience as an LPN. Positions in this classification require licensure as a Licensed Practical Nurse by the South Carolina Board of Nursing. Requires certification in Basic Life Support prior to the completion of general orientation. Excellent computer and typing skills. Working knowledge of an electronic medical record application. Adept knowledge of medical terminology. A team player who can follow processes to achieve a common goal. Highly organized and well-developed oral and written communication skills.
Preferred Experience: Must have experience/knowledge of EMR system, preferably EPIC; Strong typing skills (50+ wpm preferred);Ability to work under pressure with time constraints; Ability to concentrate and possess excellent listening skills; Recognition of physical exam process and ability to record exam details; Computer literacy; and ability to learn and use new processes, tools and equipment as required. Ability to demonstrate excellent communication skills (oral and written).
Degree of Supervision
Must be able to work independently under the supervision of a licensed healthcare provider. Ability to work with providers, other care team members, as well as with external stakeholders.
Licensures, Registrations, Certifications
Graduation from an accredited school of practical nursing and two years of related experience as an LPN. Requires certification in Basic Life Support prior to the completion of general orientation.
Physical Requirements
Continuous requirements are to perform job functions while standing, walking and sitting. Ability to bend at the waist, kneel, climb stairs, reach in all directions, fully use both hands and legs, possess good finger dexterity, perform repetitive motions with hands/wrists/elbows and shoulders, reach in all directions. Maintain 20/40 vision corrected, see and recognize objects close at hand and at a distance, work in a latex safe environment and work indoors. Frequently lift, lower, push and pull and/or carry objects weighing 50 lbs (+/-) unassisted, exert up to 50 lbs of force, lift from 36” to overhead 25 lbs. Infrequently work in dusty areas and confined/cramped spaces . Ability/willingness to travel frequently to MUSCP clinical locations away from the main campus.
Duties would include but not limited to:
Provide in room patient assistance with providers and APPs in clinic
Provide wound care (changing of dressings, photo documentation of wound, change of wound vacs, suture removal, staple removal, etc). Any change in wound care protocol is to be directed by an MD or PA.
Drain removal under the direction of an MD or PA
See 24 hr. postop and RPVs (CSB or clinic)
Wound vac forms/orders, arrange transportation, provide education to patients, point of contact for clinical care needs for patient and nurse navigators
EPIC in-basket for clinical care needs (clinical patient calls, messages, outside provider questions, medication/referral questions)
Manages referrals for wounds using Ulcer criteria
Advise home health nurses and KCI (provide wound measurements, documents, dressing instructions)
Orders clinical supplies for CSB
Perform tissue expander fills under the direction of an MD or PA
Ordering of wound care supplies for patients
Responsible or participate in completing FMLA, STD, 14b paperwork

Graduate from an accredited Practical Nurse program. Licensed as an LPN within the state of South Carolina or a compact state.
