Job Summary

Under the supervision and direction of the pharmacy supervisor/staff pharmacist, fills routine orders for unit doses, prepackaged pharmaceuticals, prepares small IVs and performs related duties.  Total parenteral nutrition and chemotherapy preparation.

Minimum Qualifications

High School Diploma or GED.  Current registration as a Pharmacy Technician by the South Carolina Board of Pharmacy (SCBOP) and national certification by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) or the Exam for the Certification of Pharmacy Technicians (ExCPT) or ability to attain certification with six (6) month of commencement is required and must be maintained.

Work Environment

Works primarily in a pharmaceutical setting with light traffic.  May required occasional prolonged standing and walking.  Must be able to lift supplies and equipment.

            None.

Essential Functions

Counts, packages and labels unit doses for inspection by pharmacist and fills routine orders and non-prescription pharmaceuticals.  Prepares total parenteral nutrition and chemotherapy.

Assists pharmacist as directed including filling orders and preparing labels.

Assists with IV preparation and delivery.

Logs all drugs delivered to pharmacy into Talyst carousel.

Prepares and makes deliveries to units and ancillary departments.

Works with pharmacist to fill and exchange unit dose containers and to refill stock including receiving supplies.

Performs other miscellaneous and related duties as assigned.

Physical Requirements

Physical requirements are primarily related to the essential functions of any job. In order to perform the essential functions of this position, you must be able to stand, walk, use hands, reach, stoop, talk and hear. 

Must be able to lift or exert energy up to 10 pounds 75% of the time and up to 25 pounds 25% of the time.

Close vision (clear vision at 20 inches or less) is required.

Mental Requirements

Must possess to ability to read and understand simple instructions, short correspondence and

memos.  Ability to effectively present information one on one or in small group situations to

families, patients, visitors or staff.

Must possess the ability to perform more complex math functions (add, subtract, multiply and

divide) using numbers and units of money.

           

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or

diagram form.  Ability to deal with problems involving concrete variables and standardized

situations.

Age Groups

This position primarily interacts with all adults but prepares pharmaceuticals for all ages and provides direct patient care. All staff members must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skill necessary to meet the physical, psycho/social, educational, safety, and related needs of the persons in the assigned work area.

Current registration as a Pharmacy Technician by the State of South Carolina Board of Pharmacy (SCBOP)is required and must be maintained.  Must obtain and maintain Pharmacy Technician Certification (Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) or Exam for the Certification of Pharmacy Technicians (ExCPT)) certification:

  • Team members as of 11/1/2023: within 1 year of 11/1/2023.
  • New Team members as of 11/1/2023: within 6 months of hire.
  • New team members who are enrolled or will enroll in a pharmacy technician training program accredited by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) and/or recognized by PTCB, have 30 days post program completion to obtain certification.
