Job Description Summary

The Registered Nurse II in the Neonatal ICU reports to the Nurse Manager. Under general supervision, the Registered Nurse II provides individualized, goal-directed patient care to families and patients at the competent level utilizing the principles and practices of the nursing process; delivers safe and effective care and interacts with other members of the health care team to achieve desired outcomes.

Job Description

Job Responsibility:  
Manage comprehensive nursing care for patients (within specialty area) with needs ranging from uncomplicated to complex and rapidly changing.

Success Criteria:
a.     Based on holistic assessment, identify relevant aspects of the situation and determine the appropriate course of action to move patient/family and staff towards the expected outcome(s).
b.     Assess subtle changes in patient status; anticipate problems before they occur and implement measures to minimize risk.
c.     Ensure completion and documentation of consistent hourly rounds on assigned patients. 
d.     Safely perform technical skills, including medication administration in area of practice.

Job Responsibility: 
Organize and prioritize nursing care plans considering the needs of the patients and other staff members.

Success Criteria:
a.    Update individualized plan of care utilizing the development, analysis and integration of complex data.
b.    Develop and evaluate the individualized plan of care (based on Clinical Pathway Guidelines (CPG/Protocol) with the patient identifying short and long term goals as applicable.
c.    Initiate, facilitate and collaborate with the interdisciplinary team to improve care delivered to patients, ensuring appropriate referrals (interdisciplinary and community) are made and completed.
d.    Utilize the nursing process to facilitate the individualized plan of care using time and resources efficiently effectively.  
e.    Design, implement and evaluate a comprehensive, culturally sensitive, patient/family education

f.    Delegate appropriately utilizing professional judgment.

Job Responsibility:  
Implement age-appropriate interventions based on individual patient needs.

Success Criteria:
a.    Develop a discharge plan for common patient populations. 
b.    Implement discharge plans for assigned patients.
c.    Function as a patient/family advocate demonstrating a caring, compassionate approach.
d.    Safely perform technical skills in area of practice. 
e.    Demonstrate knowledge of hospital policies, procedures, nursing standards, and legal issues in areas of specialty.
f.    Coordinate and manage care by applying analytical reasoning, reflection, rational problem-solving skills, using evidence-based information and clinical judgment.
g.    Participate in patient care rounds communicating the individualized plan of care needs and report progress on CPG/Protocol when applicable.
h.    Participate in shared decision making and problem solving to promote effective collaboration with interdisciplinary partners.  

Job Responsibility:  
Utilize established measures to evaluate effectiveness of care.

Success Criteria:
a.    Promote effective and efficient use of CPGs/Protocols when applicable.
b.    Collaborate with the Case Managers to monitor, evaluate and trend patient responses to treatments (using CPG/Protocol when applicable) during hospital stay.
c.    Manage resources to promote and target the best clinical outcomes for the specific patient population.

Job Responsibility: 
Demonstrate a commitment to quality patient care, environment and professional development.

Success Criteria:
a.    Identify learning needs and the resources to attain them.
b.    Serve as a resource to improve patient care and unit operation.
c.    Assist in teaching patient care procedures to other staff, students and other team members as appropriate.
d.    Orient and train new staff and student(s) in assigned areas. Provide timely written and verbal feedback.
e.    Facilitate a positive learning environment for student(s) and provide individualized teaching instructions as appropriate.
f.    Develop personal objectives and evaluate practice through discussion with others and self-evaluation.
g.    Demonstrate insight and self-awareness necessary to recognize one’s impact on others and change behavior accordingly.  
h.    Accept and utilize constructive feedback to improve performance.
i.    Demonstrate effective use of computer-based information for decision support, continuous quality improvement and professional development.

Job Responsibility:  
Actively and effectively function in a leadership role as directed.

Success Criteria:
a.    Demonstrate high standards of patient care and function as a role model for others.
b.    Delegate appropriately to others.

e.    Demonstrate awareness of unit budget.
f.    Function as the Charge Nurse as assigned and negotiate one’s time schedule and assignments in response to patient and unit needs.
g.    Consistently meet the needs of patients in a timely manner.
h.    Demonstrate fiscal accountability while providing quality care.

Job Responsibility:  
Participate in research studies and performance improvement initiatives to improve patient care and/or organizational processes.

Success Criteria:
a.    Demonstrate an awareness of current trends and issues in area of specialty through discussion or application in practice.
b.    Actively participate in unit performance improvement.
c.    Conduct an ongoing and systematic evaluation of care given to patients.
d.    Participate in research studies available.
e.    Collect data for evaluation to improve care.

Additional Job Description

3–12-night shifts per weel holidays and weekends as per unit staffing guidelines.

The PTWP care is one of only a handful of women’s facilities in the country to offer couplet-care rooms, where newborns and mothers can recover together in an intensive-care setting.
