Job Description Summary

The Security Officer reports to the Medical Center Security Manager. Under general supervision, the Security Officer monitors and provides protection and security for facilities, premises, employees, patients and visitors. Ability to communicate tactfully with the general public. Knowledge of methods of security in buildings and grounds institution. Performs routine and repetitive duties following clearly prescribed standards and practices as set forth by the Manager of Hospital Security. Work involves shift work and some overtime. Must be able to use tact and communicate clearly with public.

Job Summary

Responsible to provide safe and secure conditions for employees, visitors, and patients and to protect our assets.  Assist with visitor questions, directions and securing of patient valuables.  Reports any concerns noted and works to mitigate risk.  Confronts perceived unauthorized persons to protect the premises and may monitor camera views.

Minimum Qualifications:

High School diploma or GED with 1 year of related security experience.  SLED certified or certification within 6 months of hire.  Related security experience may include Law Enforcement, Military or ROTC experience.  Must have valid SCDL.

Work Environment:

Prolonged, extensive, and considerable standing and walking.  Exposure to dangers of assaults/hazards from investigation alarms/situations.  Requires judgement with appropriate action in varying and unpredictable situations.

Essential Functions:

Patrols hospital, buildings, and parking lots to ensure secure and safe conditions for our employees, visitors, and patients and to protect the assets from vandalism, fire, and intruders. Verifies vehicles are not parked inappropriately in restricted areas including fire zones, handicap spaces, ambulance entrances, or pick up/drop off areas.  Monitors for employees who are parking in inappropriate spaces. Answers visitor questions related to various building, office or department locations.  Provides escort as needed. Locks/unlocks applicable areas on schedules approved by leadership. Secures patient valuables or lost and found items per policy including registering items in a log. Reports any safety concerns, fire hazards, security violations, or illegal activity to leadership and works to mitigate the risk. Assists with traffic control and safety during helicopter transport and responds to fire alarms and other emergencies to ensure the safety of employees, patients, and visitors.  Assists in locating and securing the return of Code Adam patients. Monitors conduct of visitors on premises; confronts perceived unauthorized persons for questioning as needed.  Able to monitor camera system views set up to protect certain hospital areas and hospital patients.

Physical Requirements:

Physical requirements are primarily related to the essential functions of any job. In order to perform the essential functions of this position, you must be able to stand, walk, use hands, reach, climb, stoop, kneel, talk and hear.

Lift or exert energy up to 50 pounds 50% of the time and more than 100 pounds 50% of the time.

Must have close vision (clear vision at 20 inches or less), color vision (ability to identify and distinguish colors), distance vision (clear vision at 20 feet or more) and peripheral vision (ability to observe an area that can be seen move up/down or left/right).

Mental Requirements:

Ability to read and interpret business or safety manuals, clinical or technical procedures or regulations. Ability to write reports, correspondence and/or manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups, patients, families, other employees, and medical staff.

Ability to perform basic math functions (add, subtract, multiply and divide) using numbers and units of money

Must have the ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form.  Must have the ability to deal with problems involving concrete variables and standardized situations.

Age Groups:

This position primarily interacts with all age groups and provides no direct patient care. All staff members must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skill necessary to meet the physical, psycho/social, educational, safety, and related needs of the persons in the assigned work area.
