Job Description Summary

The Medical University of South Carolina’s (MUSC) nationally recognized Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine seeks an academically-oriented
individual to serve as Associate Medical Director of Clinical Chemistry and Immunology section. MUSC is a tertiary care hospital with an integrated children’s
hospital, active transplantation, a large cancer center, and an adult and pediatric Level I trauma center. Our department has approximately $5 million dollars in
extramural funding annually and is consistently ranked in the upper half of pathology departments in the United States for National Institutes of Health funding.
We are seeking
• An academically oriented candidate with 3-5 years of post-fellowship experience; current fellow/recent graduates will be considered
• A candidate with a PhD, MD or MD/PhD degree, board certified or eligible by the American Board of Clinical Chemistry or the American Board of Pathology, as
applicable
• Eligibility for medical licensure in South Carolina if applicable
• Additional formal training, certification, and/or expertise in clinical toxicology, clinical mass spectrometry, and point of care testing (preferred but not required)
• Active participation in the oversight of laboratory testing, quality, assay development and validation
• Proficiency and participation with the Medical Director of Immunology in the interpretation and sign out of serum and urine protein electrophoresis,
immunofixation, and immunotyping by capillary electrophoresis. Proficiency in the interpretation of HPLC analysis of hemoglobin variants.
• Collaboration with quality and technical staff to monitor service performance and quality and facilitate timely interventions on any issues affecting operations
• Experience in fostering collaborative relationships with clinicians and researchers as well as serving as a resource to technologists at the bench
• Participation in clinical and/or translational research endeavors
• Excellent communication skills, work ethic, and collaborative approach to patient care
• Active participation in teaching of medical students and training of pathology residents and fellows
• Active participation in the ComACC-accredited clinical chemistry fellowship training program
• Active participation in the academic mission of the Department

MUSC Pathology and Laboratory Medicine 

  • Collaborative team composed of 67 faculty 

  • High quality training programs with 22 residents and 10-12 fellows, including a ComACC-accredited clinical chemistry fellowship 

  • CAP, AABB, ASHI, and FACT certifications and accreditations  

  • You will collaboratively support the Directors of the Clinical Chemistry Laboratory and Diagnostic Immunology Laboratory in terms of teaching activities, new assay validation and verification studies, accreditation activities, and participation in applicable research and/or industry grants.

Pearl Tourville Women's Pavilion

Housed within MUSC SJCH, the Pearl Tourville Women’s Pavilion (PTWP) seamlessly integrates children’s care and obstetrical services, thereby enhancing safety and improving outcomes in low and high-risk pregnancies. The Advanced Fetal Care Center ensures that families expecting babies with complex congenital birth defects or medical problems receive care from board-certified maternal-fetal medicine providers collaborating with a large multidisciplinary care team of pediatric specialists. The PTWP care is one of only a handful of women’s facilities in the country to offer couplet-care rooms, where newborns and mothers can recover together in an intensive-care setting.
