Job Description Summary

The Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) Libraries seeks an enthusiastic, forward-thinking Executive Director to lead the Regional Medical Library for Region 2 of the National Network of Libraries of Medicine (NNLM).  Funded by the National Library of Medicine (NLM) through a cooperative agreement (2021-2026), the MUSC Libraries serves as the headquarters for Region 2, one of seven regions in the NNLM Program.  Region 2 comprises Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, South Carolina, Tennessee, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The mission of the NNLM is to advance the progress of medicine and improve the public's health by providing U.S. researchers, health professionals, the public health workforce, educators, and the public with equal access to biomedical and health information resources and data. 

Reporting to the Director of Libraries, the Executive Director provides leadership for all aspects of the NNLM Region 2, including supervising the personnel, setting direction, managing the budget, preparing reports, and evaluating the program. The successful candidate will bring a dedication to outreach and educational programs that increase access to quality health information, be skilled in managing a high-performing unit, possess strong networking and collaborative skills, and have a vision for national and regional programs that shape the future of the NNLM.

Job Description

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES  

  • Oversee the development and ongoing activities of NNLM Region 2 programs with the National Library of Medicine and other NNLM Regions.  
  • Coordinates the day-to-day operation of the Region 2 office. 
  • Supervises 5 FTE (4 faculty strategists and one classified staff).  
  • Initiates, plans, implements, manages, and evaluates Region 2 programs. 
  • Directs, oversees, and monitors ongoing outreach initiatives and award programs.  
  • Prepares and manages budget.  
  • Represents Region 2 at the national and regional levels. 
  • Establish policies, strategic plans, and objectives. 
  • Maintains effective communications with all network members, NNLM, NLM, and MUSC. 
  • Ensure compliance with NLM reporting requirements. 

 

GENERAL DUTIES 

  • Fulfill faculty duties as outlined in the MUSC Faculty Handbook. 
  • Serve on NNLM, MUSC Libraries, and University committees and working groups. 
  • Actively participate in the university's academic life, represent the library on university committees, and build collaborative and inclusive relationships throughout the university and clinical enterprise. 
  • Actively participate in professional activities through service, presentations, or publications. 

QUALIFICATIONS  

Required  

  • Master of Library Science or Master of Library and Information Science from an ALA-accredited program or an advanced degree in another discipline. 
  • 5 to 7 years of progressively responsible experience.   
  • Evidence of at least three years of supervisory experience. 
  • Evidence of effective administrative and leadership skills, including competence in budgeting, planning, organizing, and managing staff.  
  • Grant or proposal writing experience.  

Preferred  

  • Experience working in a major academic/research or large public library setting.  
  • Knowledge of the NLM and NNLM products and services.   
  • Experience with providing education and outreach programming.  
  • Knowledge of technology applications and trends in health sciences libraries.  
  • Familiarity with national or regional health care and information policy.  
  • Experience in change management.  
  • Academy of Health Information Professionals (AHIP) accreditation at a Senior or higher level.  
  • Experience with NIH’s Research Performance Progress Report (RPPR) system  
  • A record of professional service and scholarly research activity.
