Laboratory Technologist III – Ergul Lab

General Description of Position:

Working closely with research investigators and research staff, the Laboratory Technologist III is responsible for assisting in scheduling of experiments, study organization (including IACUC and IRB submissions and communication), and data collection and analysis. The Laboratory Technologist III must have the ability to surgically create animal models for therapeutic intervention and be able to use monitoring equipment, assist in the conduct of animal research studies with a focus on age-related neurodegenerations (dementia and stroke), and to perform behavioral studies.

MUSC Minimum Training and Experience Requirements:

A bachelor's degree in a health-related field and one year journey-level work experience in the specialty area; or an associate degree or equivalent training in a health-related field and two years advanced work experience in the specialty area. A master's degree in a health-related field and six months entry-level experience may be substituted for the requirements stated above. Previous technical supervisory work experience is required for supervisory positions.

Job Specific Duties:

  • 15%     E - Manage research budgets and supply inventory for multiple neuroscience projects.
  • 15%     E - Teach and participate in complex neuroscience laboratory procedures.
  • 10%     E - Operate, maintain and repair complicated scientific equipment.
  • 10%     E - Train lab personnel in OSHA/ IACUC regulations for animal and human tissue use and chemical safety.  Preparation of IRB protocols.
  • 10%     E - Organize, write and renew animal protocols; insure compliance with approved protocols at MUSC and at the VA. 
  • 10%     E - Manage and supervise the activities of graduate students and other research specialists in the laboratory.
  • 5%       E - Develop and implement new research projects to meet research goals of the laboratory.
  • 5%       E - Analyze research data using manual and computerized procedures.
  • 5%       E - Advise principal investigators and others on research techniques and procedures.
  • 5%       E - Coordinate animal and human tissue collection and distribution among several laboratories involved in interdisciplinary research projects with the VA and the College of Health Professions. 
  • 5%       E - Maintain animal, chemical and controlled drug inventories according to IACUC, OSHA and DEA regulations.
  • 5%       E - Coordinate travel arrangements for laboratory personnel to scientific meetings as well as help to coordinate paperwork for new personnel and foreign visitors.
