Job Purpose:

Under direct supervision of the Nexus Administrator, the Laboratory Technologist III performs complex laboratory tests and procedures to support SCTR Research Nexus approved clinical trials. Responsible for performing study participant sample processing, banking, and shipping according to clinical trial documents. Performs complex methodologies as required by protocols. Performs accurate and timely data entry and record keeping, maintains all records relating to clinical trial lab management, and responds to study team inquiries. Knowledge of laboratory facilities, methods, equipment, materials, and safety practices, as well as human subjects research. Responsible for compliance with study requirements as well as MUSC, state and federal guidelines. At least two years of clinical research/human subjects protection experience preferred.

Job Functions:

1. Support SCTR Research Nexus laboratory clinical research by performing patient sample processing, testing, and shipping to third party labs as required by clinical trial documents. Respond to clinical trial study team, sponsor and monitor queries and other requests with high level of customer service and excellent communication skills, ensuring all customers are treated with respect, demonstrating a spirit of service and cooperation with a positive attitude while promoting teamwork. Operate, maintain, and repair complex scientific instrumentation. Monitor and record accuracy of equipment. Provide on-call support of the automated critical equipment temperature monitoring system. Performs Epic Cadence functions, including clinic patient arrivals/cancellations, patient registrations, and review of registrations. E, 20%

2. Maintain accurate records for all procedures to facilitate reporting to all clinical trial parties. Review and report data, evaluate and report atypical test results to principal investigators, study teams, sponsors, and monitors. Maintain laboratory safety standards. Assist in development and implementation of policies, procedures and protocol written instructions to ensure compliance with clinical research regulations. E, 20%

3. Perform complex laboratory procedures and qualitative/quantitative tests on patient clinical trial samples using instruments including Qiagen semi-automated nucleic acid extraction equipment, Orflo Moxi GO II, and immunoassay microplate reader. Perform complex mathematical calculations required for laboratory methodology, including reagent preparation and dilutions. E, 10%

4. Manage the research and development (R&D) of the lab’s nucleic acid program based on evolving technological advances and methodologies. Contribute to strategic planning for laboratory services. Develop, evaluate, and implement research methodologies and laboratory procedures according to investigator need. Advise investigators and study teams on available research techniques and procedures. Consult scientific literature for evaluation of cutting-edge methodologies. E, 20%

5. Perform proposal pricing for protocols submitted to the Research Nexus. Work directly with investigators and study teams to determine study expenses and prices for budget negotiations.

Approve protocols requesting Nexus Lab services. Audit service fulfillment data for invoicing customers. Assists Nexus Administrator in the development of laboratory service pricing for GCA program income application submissions. E, 10%

6. Responsible for directly managing Laboratory Technologist Is/IIs, including performing human resource activities. Provide and demonstrate accountability for professional growth and development of staff. Train/instruct staff in standard and complex laboratory methods. Maintain up-to-date personnel lab training records. Schedules daily activities for Laboratory Technologist Is/IIs. Assigns processing, storage and shipment activities for protocols based on patient and sample schedule. Responsible for oversight of laboratory technologists’ benchwork, including quality control and quality assurance - Perform other duties as required. E, 20%

MUSC Minimum Training and Experience Requirements:

A bachelor's degree in a health-related field and one year journey-level work experience in the specialty area; or an associate degree or equivalent training in a health-related field and two years advanced work experience in the specialty area. A master's degree in a health-related field and six months entry-level experience may be substituted for the requirements stated above. Previous technical supervisory work experience is required for supervisory positions.

The Advanced Fetal Care Center ensures that families expecting babies with complex congenital birth defects or medical problems receive care from board-certified maternal-fetal medicine providers collaborating with a large multidisciplinary care team of pediatric specialists.
