The Pharmacy Intern Technician reports to the General Internal Medicine Division Director. In close collaboration with the Clinical Pharmacy Specialist, the Pharmacy Intern provides technical support for prescribers and clinical staff members around medication prescriptions and related activities of the Division of General Internal Medicine, University Internal Medicine practice.Entity

Job Description
Job Duties:
35% - Clinic Operations - Medication Safety Review
Reviews the patient’s list of medications to ensure accuracy and identifies problems such as drug-disease interactions, drug-drug interactions, and potentially inappropriate prescribing based on the Beer’s Criteria list
Reviews patient’s list of medications to ensure evidence-based medicine and guideline driven medicine is being optimized
Reviews orders for drug interactions, allergic reactions, dose and route of administration, and therapeutic duplicates or redundancy
Promotes an environment of interprofessionalism through communication with different members of the team when questions and problems arise
Reports number of safety issues identified for educational and quality improvement purposes
25% - Clinic Operations - Order Entry
Provides review of refill requests and other orders for therapeutic appropriateness, verifies that the prescription has correct days’ supply to next appointment, correct pharmacy and ensures prescription is covered under patient's insurance plan
Accurately assists with pending refill requests following standing order policy to send to authorizing users for completion
Complies with department policies and procedures on updating medication profile in the electronic medical record (EMR)
15% - Clinic Operations - Ambulatory Financial Service Functions and Counseling
Works with other healthcare staff to decrease cost of medication for patient by recommending changes, providing information regarding various programs, and referring to patient assistance and social workers when applicable
Demonstrates knowledge and understanding of paperwork and billing requirements necessary for Medicare and other insurance providers claims
10% - Patient Access
Responds to requests by patients and healthcare providers and messages within the EMR to assist patients needing prior authorizations and medication assistance in a timely fashion
Utilizes the EMR and other resources to identify patients’ needs including but not limited to prior authorizations and medication assistance
Advises healthcare providers of approvals, denials and alternative therapies by following established communication pathways
Reports number of prior authorizations/medication assistance applications processed and/or requested
5% - Communication
Communicates effectively with other team members as needed (e.g. prior authorizations, orders, patient safety concerns)
Documents all refill requests and their outcomes in the EMR using the appropriate documentation templates
Answers telephone in a timely and professional manner
Triages outpatient and call center phone calls appropriately
Checks voicemail, returns calls, and replies to emails and MyChart messages in a timely manner
Notifies pharmacists and/or covering providers of medication related questions or counseling needs
Documents all communications according to Department of Internal Medicine policy and procedure
Responds to requests from pharmacies, patients, and health care providers to assist with prescription refills
5% - Customer Service
Serves as a patient advocate by treating patients in a manner which is respectful, helpful, and pleasant while ensuring that everything reasonably possible is being done to assist them within the confines of the established structure
Be approachable when staff members and/or patients need help with something
5% - Productivity/Time Management/Pharmacy Recruitment
Completes all tasks and assignments in a safe and timely manner and with a spirit of cooperativeness
Reports to work on time and immediately starts working upon entering the clinic
Takes responsibility for conduct and success of shift by holding both yourself and others accountable for actions
Preferred Experience, Knowledge, and Requirement:
Must be an MUSC College of Pharmacy Student
Must hold an Intern Certificate from the SC Board of Pharmacy
Previous work experience in retail or hospital setting is preferred.
