Job Description Summary

The department of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology at MUSC has an opening for a highly motivated and collegial Postdoctoral Fellow in the laboratory of Dr. Judit Jimenez Sainz. The Jimenez Sainz lab focuses on the Breast Cancer Susceptible Gene 1/2 (BRCA1/2) and the Partner and localizer of BRCA2 (PALB2), caretakers of genome integrity which mutated lead to high risk of breast, ovarian, prostate, pancreatic and melanoma cancers. BRCA1/2 and PALB2 are fundamental players in the repair of double strand breaks through its role in homologous recombination and replication to preserve DNA stability. Specifically, the lab is seeking to understand the impact of genetic variants in BRCA1/2 and PALB2 localization and functions to define cancer risk and response to therapy. A second goal of the Jimenez Sainz lab is to identify novel therapeutic strategies to sensitize tumor cells based on cellular mislocalization of BRCA1/2 and RAD51 (BRCA2 partner in homologous recombination). The third goal of the Jimenez Sainz lab is to define the factors involved in the crosstalk between homologous recombination and replication machineries upon platinum drugs and PARP inhibitors.

Job Description

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

PhD in Biochemistry, Molecular and Cellular Biology, genetics or related field related techniques Human cell and tissue culture, standard DNA, protein electrophoresis techniques and microscopy

Additional Knowledge, skill, ability preferred:

Required experience in biochemistry, molecular and cellular biology related techniques Required experience with human cells and tissue culture, standard DNA, protein electrophoresis techniques and microscopy.

Must have the ability to think creatively and work independently as well as part of the team. Organizational skills, Verbal and written communication skills, Track record of publications and Excellent interpersonal skills

Job Duties:

1) Collaborates with the PI and other lab members involved to design and executes experiments using state-of-the-art biochemistry, molecular biology and human cells to study the functionality and pathogeneicity of the BRCA1/2 and PALB2 genetic variants to define cancer risk and response to therapy. These duties involved included protein purification, radioactive labeling of oligonucleotides, in vitro DNA strand exchange, cellular localization analysis in live and fixed cells, DNA damage assays, homologous recombination reporters, DNA fiber experiments, clonogenic assays, cell culture, molecular and functional experiments.

2) Collaborates in collecting and analyzing data generated from the experiments and Duties include keeping accurate records on a daily basis, identifying and using appropriate software for analysis of data, collaborating with Biostatistics and Bioinformatics Research Shared Resources to insure quality of the results, interpreting results and planning new experiments,

3) Collaborates in preparing manuscripts and grants based on the experimental data generated. Duties include keeping current with the literature, preparing figures based on data collected, writing manuscripts and sections of grants with the PI and senior team members, presenting current work in research in progress seminars, attending departmental seminars and participating in journal clubs.

4) Helps with laboratory maintenance and regulatory compliance, eg ordering, cleanup of lab areas, maintenance of equipment, helping to prepare IACUC protocols and amendments when appropriate 10% of total effort
