Job Description Summary

The postdoctoral fellow position is open at the Adilbay Lab at Medical University South Carolina and Hollings Cancer Center. This individual will work as part of a team of chemists, biologists, MDs, and imagers seeking to harness the power of fluorescence imaging for the diagnosis of cancer and in guiding surgery. The lab focuses on novel imaging techniques and new sensor technologies.

Anticipated start date: August-September 2024

As one of only 72 National Cancer Institute-designated cancer centers in the nation and the largest academic-based cancer research program in South Carolina, Hollings’ mission is to reduce the cancer burden in South Carolina and nationally through innovative research, exceptional education and training, multidisciplinary patient care, statewide cancer prevention programs, and progressive public policy transformation. We aim to find cures and improve the quality of life for those living with cancer.

Preferred Qualifications
• Ph.D. in Biochemistry, Chemistry, Life Science, or a related field
• Skills in chemistry, microscopy, and molecular imaging are highly preferred.
• Ability to coordinate complex assignments on a day-to-day basis.
• Ability to follow instructions with an eagerness to learn and grow professionally.
• Good verbal and written communication skills

Laboratory Skills
• Candidates with experience in cell culture, imaging, and animal work are preferred.
• Experience of work on HPLC, mass spec, and skills in chemistry (conjugation, click chemistry,
work with targeted small molecules and antibodies)
• Strong communication, interpersonal skills, and resilience
• High motivation, proactive, solution-oriented approach

Job Description

Job Duties:

25% Design and implement lab and animal research experiments. The fellow will design lab and animal research experiments in collaboration with lab members. After review by PI, he will have to independently perform all necessary experiments and seek the necessary support. 

15% Perform data analysis and data management activities. The fellow will store, properly organize and analyze all the data generated from the experiments using software like imageJ, Prism, R, and others. 

15% Prepare and publish scientific manuscripts, and abstracts and present results at meetings. The fellow will work on preparing scientific manuscripts of the projects they were working on and publish them in peer-reviewed journals and present them at national and international meetings.

10% Collaborate with members of the research team in developing and implementing strategies for effective management of lab/animal studies. The fellow will be in continuous interaction with all the members of the research team and collaborators to effectively use and manage bench experiments and animal studies. He/she should be able to collaborate in experiments that will require several different expertise from members of our lab and collaborating labs and institutions.

10% Perform literature reviews and assist with grant writing. Preparing the background support for any research question and project is one of the important duties of the fellow. Assisting with the grant writing process may include preparing a background, figures, and writing methods.

10% Mentoring, including oversight, feedback, and periodic evaluations of lab tech, medical students, and residents. The mentoring will be an essential part of duties, and include working together with junior members of the lab to assist on their projects and teach lab equipment and techniques.

5% Prepare regulatory documentation and participate in reporting and communications for scientific and IRB review. The fellow will be working on preparing multiple regulatory documentation including study protocols, animal study protocols, and hazardous compound handling SOPs, and will work with members of the scientific and IRB review board. 

5% Assist in the management of grant budgets. The fellow will help in calculating the expenses of performing experiments and how much disposables, reactives, and lab animals are required.

5% Teaching research associates, residents, and medical students in performing lab/animal experiments. Teaching other lab members to perform bench and animal experiments will be required from the fellow. To do so, the fellow must be proficient in all main lab techniques.
