Job Description

The Langdon Laboratory in the Dr. Charles P. Darby, Jr. Department of Pediatrics, Hollings Cancer Center, and Darby Children’s Research Institute at the Medical University of South Carolina seeks a highly motivated Postdoctoral Scholar to further the Langdon Laboratory mission: to elucidate the mechanisms driving pediatric cancer signaling and tumorigenesis and to identify potentially targetable therapeutic vulnerabilities. The successful Scholar candidate should have a PhD or equivalent degree, be eligible to work in the United States, and have extensive training in molecular biology techniques, cell-based functional assays, mammalian tissue culture, and murine husbandry, with a preference for scientists with a cancer biology training background. The Langdon Laboratory uses a combination of pharmacological and genetic perturbations in human cancer cell lines and patient-derived xenograft model systems to achieve our laboratory’s experimental goals. The successful candidate will develop an independent research project thematically related to the overarching goals of the Laboratory. The successful candidate will also be expected to support and supervise graduate and undergraduate trainees with specific tasks, experimental procedures, and laboratory maintenance. The candidate will report to and be directly supervised by the laboratory’s Principal Investigator, Dr. Casey Langdon, PhD. The Langdon Laboratory is committed to fostering a welcoming, diverse, and inclusive laboratory culture, as well as to enthusiastically support all trainees in the laboratory.

Minimum requirements: Doctoral degree and experience working with Pediatric Cancer.

35% effort:

Develops an independent research project (in collaboration with Dr. Langdon) using available model systems in the laboratory including sarcoma cell lines, patient derived xenografts, pharmacological agents, and genetic perturbations. This includes performing in vitro mammalian tissue culture-based experiments (such as immunoblotting, qRT-PCR, cell viability or toxicity assays, etc.) and in vivo immunocompromised mouse-based experiments (such as injecting shRNA-transduced cell lines or treating xenografted mice with pharmacological agents). The candidate will be expected to design, execute, troubleshoot, analyze, and interpret research findings to Dr. Langdon and the Laboratory group. Organized, accurate, and precise record keeping is essential for the successful candidate.

35% effort:

Collaborates with other members of the laboratory to assist their projects with the candidate’s expertise, preparing experiments, and mentoring junior members of the laboratory. This also includes attending weekly one-on-one meetings with Dr. Langdon, group lab meetings, plus departmental and Cancer Center seminars and retreats.

20% effort:

In cooperation with Dr. Langdon, prepares manuscripts (including writing, Figure generation, data analysis and interpretation, etc.), meeting abstracts and presentations for conferences, and assisting with grant writing for both Dr. Langdon and the candidate’s own fellowship applications.

10% effort:

Helps with laboratory maintenance, space clean-up, and regulatory compliance, including Responsible Conduct of Research training.
