Job Description

Overview:

The Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) offers a one-year, dedicated fellowship in reconstructive microsurgery. This position focuses on clinical and research development, providing extensive experience in advanced microsurgical techniques. Based primarily on the MUSC main campus, fellows will gain hands-on experience in microsurgery, emphasizing reconstructive procedures for the breast, trunk, upper, and lower extremities.

Educational Objectives:

- Achieve high competency in microsurgical techniques through comprehensive clinical and lab-based training.

- Understand all phases of patient care, from pre-operative evaluations through surgical procedures and post-operative management.

- Conduct bench or clinical research, with the goal of producing at least one publishable paper by the fellowship’s end.

Key Responsibilities:

- Actively participate in direct patient care, including rounds, surgical procedures, consultations, and follow-ups.

- Engage in MUSC’s Plastic Surgery Grand Rounds and contribute to educational rounds.

- Collaborate on research projects with the guidance of MUSC’s faculty, resulting in publishable contributions to the field.

Supervision:

The fellowship operates under the supervision of MUSC’s Division of Plastic Surgery faculty, ensuring comprehensive guidance throughout clinical and research activities.

Patient Population:

Fellows will treat a diverse range of patients, including those needing reconstructive procedures post-mastectomy, trauma patients requiring free flap reconstructions, and individuals undergoing complex reconstructive surgeries for the trunk, head, and neck.

Education and Resources:

- Access to the MUSC Microsurgery Lab

- Weekly educational conferences: Plastic Surgery Grand Rounds (Tuesdays) and Resident Conferences (Thursdays).

This fellowship offers an exceptional opportunity for individuals looking to specialize in reconstructive microsurgery, with exposure to a robust clinical environment and active participation in groundbreaking research initiatives.

All applicants must have successfully completed an ACGME accredited Residency in Plastic Surgery.
