Job Description
The MUSC CEDAR Core, residing in the College of Health Professions, is announcing an opportunity for a part-time Research Associate to work with the Core Director, Dr. Sara Knox on current CEDAR studies. The CEDAR Core performs health services research (HSR), program evaluation, and comparative effectiveness studies that use secondary data and quasi-experimental designs to measure access, cost, and outcomes for populations defined by treatment or policy issues. This position will collaborate with Dr. Knox and other Core faculty on data extraction and cleaning, data set construction, statistical analysis, and report/paper writing. Opportunities for co-teaching classes in HSR methods under Dr. Knox’s mentorship may be available. Knowledge of HSR designs for patients after acute stroke, major surgery, and/or experience and interest in studies related to Alzheimer’s disease or other dementias is desirable. This position is available immediately and is limited to 12 months. Under the guidance of the Core Director, you are expected to take the lead in data extraction from Medicare, Medicaid, All-payer data, and private insurance databases. You will learn to apply standardized approaches to data cleaning, quality control, population matching, data analysis, and reporting. Your daily work will also entail presenting the results at internal meetings, and national conferences, and writing manuscripts. Ideally, you have a degree in health services, public health, biostatistics, or another health-related quantitative field. Existing experience in archival data analysis, and strong skills in SAS programming is expected. Likewise, an excellent understanding of quasi-experimental designs, causal modeling, risk adjustment, and familiarity with ICD-10 and CPT coding is highly desirable. A PhD is required.
Job Duties:
35% - Extract clean and validate data for funded and unfunded research projects.
35% - Assist the Director on funded research projects. Collaborate with other members of the Core.
20% - Draft papers for peer-reviewed journal publications based on data analysis, interpretation, assist with manuscript writing, submission, responding to reviewer comments, and re-submission.
10% - Develop a personal area of HSR focus and execute an initial study in this area using CEDAR data.
