Job Description Summary

The Department of Public Health Sciences at The Medical University of South Carolina is looking to add a program assistant to assist with conducting tobacco treatment research studies. Incumbent will be responsible for duties across two to four research studies under the general direction of a program coordinator and principal investigator. Current studies include nicotine replacement therapy administration among individuals smoking and vaping, and using apps for smoking cessation among cancer patients. The candidate will be responsible for conducting research activities, such as: conducting all study sessions with patients following established protocols, prepare and enter data for questionnaires, processing study compensation, compiling and managing all study related participant logs (i.e., medication logs, enrollment logs, shipping logs, etc.), and preparing regulatory documents. The candidate is also responsible for communicating with a wide variety of entities such as cancer care teams, and other research support. Experience with data management such as REDCap is preferred. The candidate will also be responsible for administrative tasks, such as: Maintaining the studies’ equipment and supplies, maintaining forms, communicating with the IRB, and assisting the PI with any lab-related tasks that arise. Must be flexible and can think creatively, as well as demonstrate strong interpersonal and organizational skills.

Job Description

Job Duties:
1. 30%- Recruits study participants and ensures that subject recruitment and retention are completed per protocol procedures. Collects data through site or virtual intakes and follow-ups; structured interviews; or through other means for designated research assignments. Provides routine updates on the status of research activities in team meetings.
2. 30%-Records and compiles information related to research data. Codes and enters data into the database management system according to research specifications. Uses a variety of technological devices to input and retrieve data or generate reports.
3. 25%-Must prepare and maintain regulatory documents and communication with IRB and electronic record keeping.
4. 5%-Orders and maintains inventory of supplies. Assists in designing, developing, and modifying research procedures or survey instruments in REDCap or a similar database. May assist research and support staff.
5. 5%-Processes and summarizes data using scientific or statistical techniques. Assists in data interpretation and analyses.
6. 5%-Performs additional functions incidental to research activities.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:
•General understanding of scientific theory and methods.
•General computer skills and ability to quickly learn and master computer programs.
•Ability to perform multiple tasks and meet critical deadlines, while maintaining accuracy and quality
•Excellent organizational skills and demonstrated ability to complete detailed work accurately.
•Effective oral and written communication skills.
•Ability to work with human study participants, both in person and virtually.

Desired Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
•Should have good teamwork skills and evidence of some interest in public health, psychology, medicine, or a related field.
•Should be an organized, self-motivated, independent, and reliable individual with strong people skills, who can also work as part of a team.
•Some research experience in public health or a related field is preferred.

A high school diploma and three years of relevant program experience. A bachelor's degree may be substituted for the required program experience.
