Job Description Summary

The Transportation Director is responsible for providing innovative leadership for MUSC Transportation Services. The director is responsible for budgetary and operational oversight. They will work collaboratively with the leadership of the Office of Parking Management and Business Operations to provide timely transportation options for all of the constituent parts of MUSC in Charleston.

Job Description

Serves as the Director of University Transportation Services. Directs and manages the day-to-day operations of the MUSC Transportation Services and Fleet Operations units; Serves as a liaison to MUHA and MUSCP on matters related to ground transportation in support of the RHN and affiliated clinics; Responsible for employee shuttle bus operations, patient/visitor shuttle operations, Patient discharge service, Clinical Outreach Travel Service, State Fleet Program Administration, MUSC fleet maintenance/safety program, MUSC accident review board, and coordination with CARTA; Supervises a staff of 35 Equipment operators and transportations professionals; Responsible for an operating budget of nearly $5 million. 

Job Responsibilities:

  • 20% - Establishes clear directions, expectations, and priorities for University Transportation Services; Manages the daily operations of two units, with eight varying projects; Defines departmental objectives and scope by reviewing all initiatives to determine time frame, available funding, procedures, and various phases of implementation, life-cycle management, and operational strategies;  oversees project operations to ensure compliance with federal and state laws.
  • 20% - Directs and coordinates the major administrative and business management operations of University Transportation Services.  Administers a budget in excess of $4 million by managing cash flow and ensuring that all budgets and supporting documentation are prepared, submitted, and approved. Ensure UTS follows all applicable state, federal, and university regulations and policies. Create and implement leader and staff development programs to promote growth and improvement measured through operational performance, EPMS, and engagement. 
  • 20% - Prepares short-range and long-range schedules for all operations and assets, including facilities, equipment, personnel, and other related special projects to include vehicle life-cycle management, establishing enterprise-wide standards for agency vehicle management, and driver training and development. 
  • 20%—Establishes an effective communications program with institutional personnel in all matters relating to the department; effectively sets Departmental expectations for employees. Communicates effectively with senior management, stakeholders, other department/division administrators, and university staff. 
  • 15% - Plans for the future of enterprise transportation initiatives, including alignment of transportation functions; serves as a technical expert in the area of transportation advising University and Medical Authority senior management on service and operational issues. Maintains a productive working relationship with governing state agencies, vendors, and key stakeholders enterprise-wide.
  • 5% - Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Business Operations in support of the operational efforts of Transportation Services, Business Operations, and other units within the Operations division.

A bachelor's degree and relevant program experience.

MUSC Minimum Training and Experience Requirements:

Bachelor's degree and 4 years of full-time administrative/managerial experience required (preferably in the transportation industry) or a high school diploma with 10 years of full-time administrative/managerial experience, preferably with some in operations, transportation, or logistics.  

CDL Class B or higher preferred.

MUSC Physical Requirements:
