Job Description Summary
Reporting to the University Chief Financial Officer (CFO), the Controller oversees the planning, development, implementation, and maintenance of the University's financial services and departments, supporting and promoting goals and objectives. The Controller will play a key role in furthering MUSC's mission through leadership and service in the areas of compliance with applicable federal and state regulations, treasury management, accounting, disbursements, tax, inventory and surplus services, financial reporting, permanent improvement planning, managing the institution's bonded indebtedness, and other assignments as designated by the CFO. The MUSC Controller is responsible for keeping the CFO informed on financial matters to facilitate decisions affecting the financial health of MUSC. Other areas of responsibility include defining and implementing key performance indicators and strategic objectives for the department, facilitating the measurement of those objectives, and reporting results to the CFO. Direct reports of the Controller include the Assistant Controller and Business Manager.Entity

Job Description
Direct the work of approximately 50 financial professionals so that the University's financial position is managed. Develop and put into action plans for efficient and effective management of MUSC resources; prepare, analyze, and interpret the MUSC annual and interim financial reports; manage University project administration and physical asset accounting; manage bonded indebtedness and the reporting of information related to permanent improvement projects for the University. Advise senior administration officials on funding matters related to capital projects and leases; work closely with the State Treasurer's Office, bond attorneys and financial advisors on bond activities; oversee the cash management operations of the University to ensure the effective utilization of financial resources; oversee tax management operations of the University to ensure compliance with the federal, state and other regulatory agencies. Divisions reporting to the Controller include (1) Accounting Operations: including Disbursement Services (Payroll and Accounts Payable), Bursar (Cashier and Student Accounting), Tax Management, and Inventory and Surplus Departments; and (2) Reporting: including Accounting Services, Cash Management, and Capital Accounts and Leases. Oversee an active environment of process improvement.
Job Requirements
Bachelor's degree and a minimum of 10 years experience from an accredited College/University in a field relevant to the role, such as business, finance, or accounting.
Master's degree and Certified Public Accountant (CPA) preferred with a minimum of 8 years' experience.
Experience in higher education and/or at an academic medical center is preferred.
Demonstrated progressive expertise in overseeing internal/external audits, financial analysis, asset management, disbursement and tax management, and accounting.
Minimum of 5 years experience in a leadership role.

Demonstrated accomplishments in maintaining administrative/financial controls while actively supporting entrepreneurial initiatives are desirable; knowledge of accounting and financial management for higher education institutions is preferred.
