Job Description Summary

Oncology Nurses have the privilege of consistently spending one on one time with patients, developing strong personal relationships with both them and their families. Oncology nurses provide comfort and support throughout the process of cancer diagnosis, treatment, and recovery. Our nurses collaborate with radiation therapists, resident physician, social workers, dosimetrists, and physicists.

MUSC has 3 radiation oncology clinics locations in the Charleston area: Hollings Cancer Center, MUSC Main Hospital, and MUSC Radiation Oncology in Mount Pleasant. These clinics manager and treat patients with complex cancer diagnoses at differing stages. We see patients of all ages, although we predominantly treat adults. We treat all diagnoses, but the most common are neurologic, head and neck, gynelogic, breast, lung/thoracic, Gastrointestinal (GI) and Genitourinary (GI), prostate, and sarcomes. The treatment modalities include external beam radiation, brachytherapy, and gamma knife.

Job Description

The Certified Medical Assistant II reports to the Outpatient Clinic Manager. Under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse, the Certified Medical Assistant performs multi-skilled activities to support a decentralized patient-centered approach to patient care and achieve desired outcomes. Assists in examination and treatment of patients under the direction of a physician. Interviews patients, measures vital signs (i.e., pulse rate, temperature, blood pressure, weight, and height), and records or inputs information to patients' medical record. Prepares treatment rooms for examination of patients.

Minimum Education and Requirements: High school diploma or equivalent. Completion of an accredited medical assistant program with six months of CMA/RMA experience required. Must be certified through the American Medical Technologist (AMT) or American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA) or National Health career Association (NHA) or MedCA as a Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA), Certified Medical Assistant (CMA), or National Association for Health Professionals (NAHP). Current American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) certification or American Red Cross BLS for Healthcare Providers certification is required.

For every 100 additional pounds, assistance will be required from another healthcare worker. 20 lbs. of force is needed to push a 400 lb. patient in a wheelchair on carpet. 25 lbs. of force is required to push a stretcher with a patient with one hand. Ability to maintain 20/40 vision, corrected, in one eye or with both eyes. (Continuous) Ability to see and recognize objects close at hand or at a distance. (Continuous) Ability to match or discriminate between colors. (Continuous) Ability to determine distance/relationship between objects; depth perception. (Continuous) Good peripheral vision capabilities. (Continuous) Ability to maintain hearing acuity, with correction.
