Job Description Summary

As Director of the Center for AI, the successful candidate will report to the Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost for MUSC and the Chief Physician Executive of MUSC Health. They will facilitate the translation of AI-enabled discoveries into practice, leading to real-world results and improved patient outcomes. As Center Director, hey will closely partner with MUSC's Information Solutions team to leverage MUSC's robust data infrastructure and mature research data governance to ensure that investigators have access to data, AI tools, computational infrastructure, and expertise to curate the data across domain-specific repositories. The Center Director will also lead interdisciplinary education and training opportunities that enable collaboration among clinicians, scientists, and trainees.

As Division Director of the AI & Biomedical Informatics Division, the successful candidate will build and lead a top-tier research and training program that leverages AI to enhance clinical care, expedite drug discovery, deliver more personalized care, support population health, and promote responsible AI. As Division Director, they will recruit and retain faculty to support an academic initiative focused on developing AI methods, data integration, and multimodal data, resulting in significant insights into health and disease.

In both roles, the Director will support and foster relationships with industry to achieve common goals.

Job Description

Key Responsibilities

  • Leadership and Strategy: Develop and execute a strategic vision for the MUSC Center for AI and the Division within the College of Medicine. Foster interdisciplinary collaboration and drive initiatives that enhance the integration of responsible AI in medical research and clinical practice.
  • Recruit, Mentor, and Support: Recruit talented researchers in the field to build a strong research team that will integrate their research with the clinical enterprise.
  • Research and Innovation: Lead and support cutting-edge research in health-related AI. Secure research funding, publish in high-impact journals and present findings at national and international conferences.
  • Data Analytics: Oversee the analysis of large-scale medical data to derive meaningful insights and improve patient outcomes. Implement advanced AI methodologies to address complex healthcare challenges.
  • Collaboration and Outreach: Build partnerships with academic institutions, industry stakeholders, and government agencies. Promote the Center's work through public engagement and professional networks.
  • Mentorship: Mentor students, postdoctoral fellows, and junior faculty members in their research and career development.

Qualifications

  • Academic Credentials: A Ph.D. or equivalent terminal degree in a relevant field such as computer science, medicine, biomedical engineering, or a related discipline is required.
  • Experience: Demonstrated experience in a leadership role within an academic or research institution. A strong background in health-related AI and data analytics is essential.
  • Research Excellence: A distinguished record of research achievements, including peer-reviewed publications, successful grant applications, and a history of impactful discoveries in AI and medicine.
  • Skills: Proficiency in advanced data analytics, machine learning techniques, and AI tools. Strong communication and interpersonal skills to effectively lead and inspire a diverse team.
