Job Description Summary

MUSC Community Physicians (MCP) is an entity within the Medical University of South Carolina that provides healthcare to patients within the rural health network throughout the state of South Carolina.

The Executive Director of Anesthesia Services provides enterprise-wide leadership and end-to-end operational accountability for anesthesia services across 11 community hospitals spanning multiple markets statewide. Reporting to the Chief Physician Executive, this role holds full P&L responsibility for an approximately $80M service line and partners in a dyad model with the Chief Anesthesia Medical Director.

This senior executive role requires deep expertise in anesthesia operations, financial management, and multi-site service line leadership. The Executive Director serves as the primary operational and financial steward of anesthesia services, ensuring high-quality, reliable clinical coverage while maintaining fiscal discipline and strategic alignment with hospital and divisional leadership.

Key Responsibilities

Enterprise & Financial Leadership

·       Full P&L accountability for anesthesia services across 11 community hospitals, including budgeting, forecasting, and financial performance management.

·       Serve as the subject matter expert on anesthesia subsidy models, clearly articulating key cost and revenue drivers and explaining variances from budget or forecast.

·       Develop and execute strategies to optimize staffing models, coverage efficiency, and financial sustainability across diverse community hospital environments.

Operational & Clinical Partnership

·       Lead all non-clinical anesthesia operations in partnership with the Chief Anesthesia Medical Director within a formal dyad structure.

·       Ensure consistent, high-quality anesthesia service delivery across multiple markets while adapting to local hospital needs and volumes.

·       Oversee staffing structures, scheduling models, and performance management across sites.

Executive & Stakeholder Engagement

·       Serve as a trusted advisor to hospital CEOs, CFOs, CMOs, and divisional leaders.

·       Present complex operational and financial data in clear, executive-level formats.

·       Represent anesthesia services in enterprise forums and system-level strategic initiatives.

Strategic Growth & Performance

·       Identify opportunities to improve operational efficiency and reduce unwarranted variation.

·       Support growth initiatives, new service offerings, and market expansion.

·       Establish and monitor performance metrics related to access, quality, staffing, and financial outcomes.

Qualifications & Experience

Required

·       7–10+ years of progressive leadership experience managing anesthesia services across multiple sites.

·       Demonstrated enterprise anesthesia operations experience, including staffing models, subsidies, and financial management.

·       Proven ability to engage and present to senior executives including CEOs and CFOs.

·       Strong command of anesthesia economics and workforce dynamics.

·       MBA or equivalent graduate degree.

Preferred, not required

·       Clinical background as a CRNA or other anesthesia professional.

·       Experience with a national anesthesia management company (e.g., Envision, TeamHealth, NorthStar) or a large hospital management organization (e.g., HCA).

·       Experience leading anesthesia services in community hospital settings across multiple markets.

Ability to exert up to 50 lbs. of force.  Examples include: To transfer a 100 lb. patient that cannot assist in the transfer requires 50 lbs. of force. For every 100 additional pounds, assistance will be required from another healthcare worker. 20 lbs. of force are needed to push a 400 lb. patient in a wheelchair on carpet. 25 lbs. of force are required to push a stretcher with a patient with one hand. Ability to maintain 20/40 vision, corrected, in one eye or with both eyes.  Ability to see and recognize objects close at hand or at a distance.  Ability to match or discriminate between colors.  Ability to determine distance/relationship between objects; depth perception. Ability to maintain hearing acuity, with correction.  Ability to perform gross motor functions with frequent fine motor movements.  Ability to deal effectively with stressful situations.  Ability to work rotating shifts.  Ability to work overtime as required.  Ability to work in a latex safe environment.  Ability to maintain tactile sensory functions.  * *Ability to maintain good olfactory sensory function.  * *Ability to be qualified physically for respirator use, initially and as required.
