The Certified Breast Navigator functions within the multidisciplinary team as the structure teaching point contact for breast cancer patients and their families. The navigator's primary function is assisting patient's healthcare system by assisting with access issues, developing relationships with service providers, and tracking interventions and outcomes with the goal of achieving optimal patient outcome. The navigator serves as a point of contact for referring physicians, patients, and caregivers, to provide resources regarding accessing clinical and supportive care. The navigator also assists patient's an understanding there are diagnosis, treatment options, and the internal and community resources available.

Job Description

The Breast Health Patient Navigator and Mammographer delivers comprehensive, patient‑centered care across the breast imaging continuum. This role coordinates patient flow, evaluates clinical needs, and facilitates seamless placement and care transitions throughout the health system. With strong clinical judgment and knowledge of age‑appropriate care, this position supports timely diagnosis, follow‑up, and education for patients and families.

The navigator oversees daily case reviews, schedules follow‑up appointments, and ensures accurate documentation, charge entry, and communication with radiologists and referring providers. This role adheres strictly to HIPAA and maintains current knowledge of hospital policies, professional standards, and regulatory guidelines including Joint Commission, OSHA, FDA, and ACR requirements.

As a skilled Mammographer, the position performs mammograms, bone density exams, stereotactic biopsies, needle localizations, and breast ultrasounds. The navigator also assists with tracking and monitoring BI‑RADS 4, 5, and 6 cases.

The role uses critical thinking to identify patient needs, remove barriers to care, and support newly diagnosed cancer patients through education, scheduling, and resource coordination. By maintaining strong relationships with the multidisciplinary team, the navigator promotes high‑quality care, continuity, and adherence to national standards.

Additional responsibilities include supporting program growth, contributing to quality improvement initiatives, participating in budget planning, and assisting with outreach, community events, and physician engagement. The navigator encourages patient retention, assists with financial counseling, maintains detailed patient databases, and collaborates on initiatives related to psychosocial support, survivorship, and community education.

This position requires independent work, cultural competence, effective communication, and a commitment to improving patient outcomes and overall breast health services.

Additional Job Description

Education: Associate or bachelor’s degree completed at an AMA approved school of radiological technology and be registered by the American Registry of Radiological Technologists (A.R.R.T) and licensed by SC Radiation Quality Standards Association. Registered in Mammography. Registered in Breast Ultrasound.

Advanced certification as a patient navigator or obtain within one year of hire. Experience: Require a minimum of five years of clinical practice in the healthcare setting. Possess knowledge of MQSA/FDA/ACR standards

Credentials: Current registration from the American Registry of Radiologic Technologist (ARRT) in x-ray and mammography. Current State of South Caroline Licensure. Current Basic Life Support (BLS) required, either a certification from an American Heart Association (AHA) BLS for Healthcare Providers (or AHA recognized equivalent) or an American Red Cross CPR/AED for Professional Rescuer and Healthcare Provider.
