Job Description Summary

The Unit Secretary position reports to the Nurse Manager and covers primarily Med Surg and SCDC but will assist with collection of STAT blood samples at the Chester Nursing Center as instructed.

Job Description

The Unit Secretary places data on the patient charts, keeps an adequate number of forms on the charts, answers the call bell and answers the phone.  The unit secretary may function as a preceptor for (and thus be accountable for) orienting unit secretaries.  This position will perform certified nursing assistant duties within the limits of training and certification in caring for the hospitalized patient.  The care is rendered under the supervision of a Registered Nurse.   This position will perform other duties related to the work described herein.  The position will also access patient labels, collect blood samples and transport blood samples to the laboratory for analysis. 

Additional Job Description

Education: 

High school graduate with reading and writing skills, some previous computer knowledge and adequate typing skills required.

Experience:

At least one year of experience in a hospital or medical environment.  Must be able to follow directions and perform work according to department standards when no directions are given.  Meets competency-based phlebotomy criteria.

Licenses/Certificates:

Current American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) required.  Certified nursing assistant preferred. Phlebotomy certificate preferred.
