Job Description

Essential Functions

  • Assesses the educational needs of nursing staff.
  • Plans annual educational opportunities for nursing staff
  • Conducts nursing orientation program every other week for all levels of nursing service staff; conducts orientation for contract staff as scheduled
  • Develops educational programs for nursing staff.
  • Evaluates the effectiveness of formalized educational programs and initiates changes to improve outcomes.
  • Assists with the development and implementation of annual generic competencies for all licensed/unlicensed staff.
  • Serves as clinical resource person.
  • Maintains positive relationships and communications with the medical staff, nursing staff and other interdisciplinary departments.
  • Assists with completion of educational records, reports, files and documentation as required.

Physical Requirements

Physical requirements are primarily related to the essential functions of any job. In order to perform the essential functions of this position, you must be able to stand, walk, sit, use hands, reach, stoop, talk, hear and smell.

Lift or exert energy up to 50 pounds 25% of the time and 100 pounds 50% of the time and more than 100 pounds 25% of the time.

Maintains close vision (clear vision at 20 inches or less), distance vision (clear vision at 20 feet or more) color vision (ability to identify and distinguish colors), peripheral vision (ability to observe an area that can be seen move up/down or left/right) and depth perception (three-dimensional vision, ability to judge distances).

Mental Requirements

Must possess the ability to read and interpret business or safety manuals, clinical or technical procedures or regulations. Ability to write reports, correspondence and/or manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups, patients, families, other employees and medical staff.

Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide, and perform more complex math functions to include calculating percentages, averages, volume, ratio and interpreting graphs - using numbers, money and units of measure. Ability to define problems, collects data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to

deal with concrete and abstract concepts and interpret verbal, nonverbal and written instructions.

Additional Job Description

Minimum qualifications include a bachelor’s degree in nursing from an accredited school of nursing and a minimum of three years of applied clinical experience as an RN. Greater than 20 years of nursing experience may be substituted in lieu of a bachelor’s degree in nursing. Master’s degree from an accredited school of nursing preferred. A master’s degree in nursing may be substituted for 1 year of required experience. Extensive knowledge of the unit’s patient population, health care trends, community and regional resources and service availability to these populations. An ability to establish comparative working relationships with diverse groups and individuals, medical staff, and other health care disciplines. Current South Carolina licensure as a registered nurse or compact state. Current American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) certification or American Red Cross BLS for Healthcare Providers certification is required. Other certifications may be required to maintain employment for a respective department.
