Job Description Summary

The MUSC Health Charleston Emergency Department EmPATH Unit (Emergency Psychiatric Assessment Treatment and Healing Unit) is a specialized behavioral health assessment and short-term crisis stabilization unit for adult/pediatric patients who present to the ED in a mental health crisis.

The Adult EmPath Unit is an 8-bay unit located next to the Adult Emergency Department on the first floor of the Clinical Science Building. All bays are open and single occupancy. Adult EmPath is a behavioral health area for adult patients (18 yrs. & over) in crisis who will typically benefit from a therapeutic milieu in less than 72hrs. before disposition.

The Youth EmPath Unit is a 4-bay unit located on the 2nd floor of SJCH. All bays are open and single occupancy. Youth EmPath is the behavioral health area for youth patients (17 yrs. & under) in crisis who will typically benefit from a therapeutic milieu in less than 72hrs. before disposition.

Job Description

The MUSC Health Charleston Emergency Department EmPATH Unit (Emergency Psychiatric Assessment Treatment and Healing Unit) is a specialized behavioral health assessment and short-term crisis stabilization unit for adult/pediatric patients who present to the ED in a mental health crisis.

The EmPATH Social Worker reports to the Psychiatric Social Work Manager for Mental Health ICCE. Under clinical practice guidance of the Social Work Manager and in collaboration with the multi-disciplinary team, the EmPATH Social Worker provides a wide variety of direct social work services to adult/pediatric populations and is responsible for psychosocial assessment/consult, coordination of care with community agencies (SCDMH, case management, outpatient therapists, psychiatric hospitals, etc.), group therapies and discharge planning to safely and supportively transition the patient from the hospital to the most appropriate level of care. Brief solution focused therapy, crisis intervention skills and psychoeducation along with knowledge/skills in treatment of substance use disorders and mental illness are preferred.

This position will work with a multi-disciplinary team embedded in the Emergency Department areas to provide direct social work services and management of psychiatric patients who present to the MUSC Health Main Hospital and Shawn Jenkins Children Hospital EDs. Cross coverage in the Adult Psychiatric ED (DPOD), Shawn Jenkins Children's Hospital ED, and adult/pediatric EmPATH units will be required at times. 

Shift: Weekends - Fri/Sat/Sun - 9a-9:30p

Education:

Master's Degree in Social Work or Social Welfare program accredited by the Council on Social Work Education required.

Required Licensure, Certifications, Registrations: 

Licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW) licensure by the South Carolina Board of Social Work Examiners required. Certification in case management preferred.  Licensure required at the time of hire.

Requires excellent communication skills, attention to detail, and ability to work independently. Demonstrates ability to collaborate in a positive, professional manner with medical professionals. Requires ability to work in a thorough but efficient manner.

(I) Ability to lift/lower objects 50 lbs. from/to floor from/to 36 inches unassisted. (I) Ability to lift from 36” to overhead 25 lbs. (I) Ability to exert up to 50 lbs. of force. (F) Examples include: To transfer a 100 lb. patient that can not assist in the transfer requires 50 lbs. of force. For every 100 additional pounds, assistance will be required from another healthcare worker. 20 lbs. of force is needed to push a 400 lb. patient in a wheelchair on carpet. 25 lbs. of force is required to push a stretcher with a patient with one hand. Ability to maintain vision 20/40 corrected. (C) Ability to see and recognize objects close at hand or at a distance. (C) Ability to match or discriminate between colors. (C) Ability to determine distance/relationship between objects; depth perception. (C) Good peripheral vision capabilities. (C) Ability to maintain hearing acuity, with correction. (C) Ability to perform gross motor functions with frequent fine motor movements. (C) Ability to deal effectively with stressful situations. (C) Ability to work rotating shifts.
