Job Description

The Medical University of South Carolina is seeking Highly Qualified Neonatal or Pediatric Nurse Practitioners or Physician Assistants to work PRN in an established Level I/II practice at MUSC Health Columbia Medical Center Northeast. The qualified Advanced Practice Provider will attend high risk deliveries and develop a plan of care for each infant while collaborating with MUSC physicians in Charleston via Telehealth technology.

About this position: To bring high-quality care and access to life-saving technology to residents of our surrounding communities, MUSC Health has partnered with several locations to support level 1 and 2 nurseries with direct ties to physicians located in Charleston, SC. We are looking for skilled, knowledgeable Neonatal or Pediatric Nurse Practitioners and Physician Assistants to help support this technology-driven well-baby nursery. 

  • The Advanced Practice Provider position will be PRN; weekend coverage starting at 5pm Friday until 8am Monday at Hilton Head Hospital and/or 24 hour shifts at MUSC Columbia Medical Center Northeast, overnight call (from home) or 30-minute response time. 
    • Candidates must be confident and have the experience and knowledge to make decisions about patient care while relaying key information to collaborating physicians located off-site. 
    • Must be comfortable with resuscitation, peripheral IVs, ART sticks, managing ventilators, administering pulmonary surfactant, umbilical lines, catheters, and other sick baby related procedures. Circumcision is a must, will provide training with Plastibell if needed.
    • Strong leadership skills are required, and candidates must be willing to guide and develop nursing support to achieve optimal patient care. 
    • The Advanced Practice Provider position will be PRN; providing weekend rounding coverage and attend high risk deliveries as needed. APP must be able to commit to a minimum of 1 weekend per quarter.

Required Minimum Training and Education:

  • Physician Assistant (PA): Completion of an accredited Physician Assistant program and currently licensed or eligible for licensure as a Physician Assistant.

or

  • NP/NNP: Completion of an accredited Nurse Practitioner Program and currently licensed or eligible for licensure as a Neonatal Nurse Practitioner (NNP)
  • Must have at least 3-5 years’ experience as a Neonatal Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant with experience in the Neonatal ICU.

Degree of Supervision: Neonatal Nurse Practitioner (NNP) or Physician Assistant (PA) will be assigned a Primary Supervising/Collaborating Physician employed by MUSC.

Required Licensure, Certifications, Registrations: Currently licensed (or eligible) in the state of South Carolina as an

  • NNP with the SC Board of Nursing, or a
  • Physician Assistant by the South Carolina Board of Medical Examiners.
  • Requires certification in Basic Life Support (BLS). If BLS is not current, provider must enroll and have received certificate by start date.
  • Requires certification in Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP). If NRP is not current, provider must enroll and have received certificate by start date. DHEC and DEA license applications must be submitted prior to first day.
