Job Description Summary

MUSC’s Orthopedic Unit is located on 10 East in the Main Hospital in beautiful downtown Charleston. 10 East is a 20 bed acute care, post-operative unit, specializing in Orthopedic and Urology surgeries. Our patients seek us out for our expertise in adult reconstruction, total joint replacement, ortho trauma, ortho oncology, and urologic procedures. MUSC’s Joint Replacement program has received the Join Commission Advanced Certification for Total Hip and Knee Replacement and the Joint Commission Gold Seal Certification for Total Shoulder Replacement. The Orthopedic unit was awarded the NAON Nursing Excellence (ONE) Award acknowledging our commitment to professionalism in nursing practice through exemplary care for patient and achievement in quality outcomes. Job Description

Hours Per Week:   36

Scheduled Work Hours/Shift: 3-12 hour shifts, including some weekends & holidays

 

Job Summary/Purpose: The Registered Nurse II / Relief Staff Leader (RSL) reports to the Nurse Manager.  Under general supervision, the RN II/RSL provides individualized, goal-directed patient care to families and patients at the competent level utilizing the principles and practices of the nursing process.  This role delivers safe and effective care and interacts with other members of the health care team to achieve desired outcomes. As assigned, this position provides department/shift leadership in RSL role. 

 

Minimum Training and Education:  Bachelor of Nursing degree preferred. RN staff hired on or after July 1, 2013 with an Associate or Diploma degree in nursing are required to be enrolled in an accredited BSN program within two years and successfully obtain a BSN degree within four years of the RN hire or reclassification date. Refer to policy A141 for more details. A minimum of one year of work experience as a registered nurse required.

 

Required Licensure, Certifications, Registrations:  Licensure as a registered nurse by the South Carolina Board of Nursing or a compact state. Current Basic Life Support (BLS) required, either a certification from an American Heart Association (AHA) BLS for Healthcare Providers (or AHA recognized equivalent) or an American Red Cross CPR/AED for Professional Rescuer and Healthcare Provider.

For every 100 additional pounds, assistance will be required from another healthcare worker. 20 lbs. of force is needed to push a 400 lb. patient in a wheelchair on carpet. 25 lbs. of force is required to push a stretcher with a patient with one hand. Ability to maintain 20/40 vision, corrected, in one eye or with both eyes. (Continuous) Ability to see and recognize objects close at hand or at a distance. (Continuous) Ability to match or discriminate between colors. (Continuous) Ability to determine distance/relationship between objects; depth perception. (Continuous) Good peripheral vision capabilities. (Continuous) Ability to maintain hearing acuity, with correction.
