Job Description

The primary purpose of this position is to provide patients and residents with additional care and service assistance as indicated to improve their strength, mobility, and overall wellness. The Restorative Care CNA is to be accountable for the delivery of quality care to patients and families, according to the individualized needs of the patient under the direction of the RN. The Restorative Care CNA is responsible for the care of patients within adult and geriatric populations, as applicable. The Restorative Care CNA must accept and promote professional development within their scope of practice. The Restorative Care CNA coordinates patient care activities with other members of the health care team in a collegial relationship and performs all duties in a manner that supports the team concept and MUSC Health Mission Statement.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Administer restorative activities specific to patient or resident needs
  • Perform transfers, bed mobility, positioning and range of motion (passive/active)
  • Perform general strengthening exercises
  • Ensure placement of restorative devices/equipment (e.g., splints, positioning devices)
  • Assist with turning and positioning of patients or residents as needed
  • Document treatment activity and summarize progress for each patient or resident as indicated
  • Document and report patient care participation and information accurately, concisely, and in a timely manner
  • Notify Restorative Care RN, CSL, or appropriate therapy discipline of problems, referrals and   reassessment needs
  • Follow appropriate safety, hygiene and infection control measures
  • Ensure adequate restorative supplies to meet the needs of the residents in the Restorative Care Program
  • Maintain consistent resident care schedule and be efficient in use of time
  • Coordinate restorative treatments with other facility departments
  • Attend all meetings and in-services as required
  • Follow policies and procedures for Restorative Care Program
  • Identify potential problems/issues and report to Restorative Care RN in a timely manner
  • Support Quality improvement and outcomes process as they relate to the Restorative Care Program
  • Provides quality care in an efficient, cost-effective manner
  • Demonstrate advancement of professional development through continuing education and department activities
  • Promote and adapt to change within an evolving healthcare environment
  • Recognizes and responds immediately and appropriately to potential emergency situations that arise
  • Utilizes therapeutic communication. Demonstrates adaptive/timely communication based on individual patient/family needs
  • Promotes comfort measures based on experience, external resources, and interdisciplinary collaboration
  • Actively engages in communication, feedback, and conflict resolution. Takes a leadership role in building and maintaining an environment that fosters open communication, patient, and family-centered care, and collegial relationships.
  • Completes annual training for assigned job and department. Competencies may include mandatory required competencies, skills checkoffs, BLS, and crisis training as designated
  • Collect vital sign data including temperature, heart rate, respiratory rate, blood pressures, and oxygen saturation levels as necessary or indicated

Additional Job Description

Minimum Training and Education: High School diploma or GED is required. At least one year of patient care experience in a healthcare facility or as Certified Nursing Assistant is preferred.

Required Licensure, Certifications, Registrations:

Current Nursing Assistant for the state of South Carolina. Will be required to maintain American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS). Crisis prevention training may be required based on department requirements.
