Job Description Summary

The MUSC Foundation is seeking a strategic, highly collaborative leader to serve as Senior Director, Campaign — a pivotal role in one of the most ambitious philanthropic efforts in the institution's history, anchored by a $250 million campaign to build a state-of-the-art cancer hospital.

This role serves as the architect and operational engine of the campaign. While not directly responsible for solicitations, the Senior Director drives the strategy, infrastructure, and execution necessary to achieve transformational outcomes and ensures that all campaign efforts are coordinated, data-informed, and positioned for maximum impact.

Job Description

Campaign Strategy (40%) Design and guide the overarching campaign strategy, defining priorities, phasing, and a roadmap that inspires philanthropic investment. Serve as the central coordinating hub — building detailed plans, timelines, and governance structures. Partner with senior leaders and faculty to align campaign priorities with institutional goals and unite diverse stakeholders around a shared vision.

Campaign Implementation (30%) Equip frontline fundraising teams with the strategy, structure, and insights needed to engage donors and close transformational, principal, and major gifts. Establish metrics and reporting tools to ensure transparency and accountability. Strengthen advancement infrastructure by partnering with the VPIA and AVP to implement systems and best practices that sustain long-term success. Maintain deep knowledge of MUSC priorities to translate institutional strategy into advancement action. Uphold strict confidentiality in all matters related to gifts, executive leadership, and campaign priorities.

Advisory (30%) Serve as a trusted advisor to the VPIA on all campaign-related matters. Identify opportunities to deepen collaboration between the MUSC Foundation and MUSC Executive Leadership. Continuously evaluate and improve processes to enhance efficiency and cross-functional alignment. Lead special campaign initiatives as assigned, establishing timelines, deliverables, and success metrics. Anticipate executive needs and proactively strengthen engagement and institutional positioning.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree required, advanced degree preferred.

  • 6–10 years of progressive experience in advancement, philanthropy, or a related field, with demonstrated success in campaign management or major gift fundraising operations

  • Proven project management skills, with the ability to manage complex, multi-stakeholder initiatives on time and within scope.

  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to translate institutional vision into compelling narratives for diverse audiences.

  • Strong organizational and analytical skills, including experience developing metrics, reporting frameworks, and accountability structures.

  • Demonstrated ability to build collaborative relationships with senior leaders, faculty, and cross-functional teams.

  • High degree of professionalism, discretion, and sound judgment, particularly in handling confidential information related to principal and major gifts.

  • Strategic thinker with a proactive, solutions-oriented mindset and the ability to anticipate executive needs.

  • Experience with advancement CRM systems and campaign infrastructure preferred

  • Experience with academic medical centers or higher education fundraising environments

Physical Requirements:

Continuous requirements are to work indoors; possess good finger dexterity; maintain tactile sensory functions; maintain 20/40 vision corrected in one eye or with both eyes; maintain good peripheral vision capabilities; and maintain hearing acuity with correction.

Infrequent requirements are to work outdoors in all weather and temperature extremes; work in confined/cramped spaces and dusty areas; kneel and squat to perform job functions; perform pinching operations; lift and carry 15 lbs. unassisted; lift objects up to 15 lbs. from floor level to a height of 36 inches unassisted; and push or pull objects up to 15 lbs. unassisted.
