The Sterile Processing Technician III can perform all duties of a Sterile Processing Tech I and is a resource and preceptor for the Sterile Processing team. An SPD Tech III can work independently in all areas. He or she participates in all unit quality control activities. He/she is responsible for daily record keeping and chemical, mechanical, & biological monitoring relative to sterilization processes. Responsible for helping to maintain a safe environment for fellow team members. He or she completes special projects, with minimal supervision, as assigned by departmental leadership.Entity

Practices within the standards of ANSI/AAMI, AORN, OSHA and the policies and procedures of MUSC Performs basic computer functions. Adheres to standard precautions as appropriate, which may include: the use of protective barriers, as appropriate (e.g., gloves, masks, gowns, pocket masks, and/or safety glasses) Knows fire and safety procedures for work area. Clean, set up, sterilize and distribute instruments as scheduled on each shift. Employees are expected to comply with all regulatory requirements, including Joint Commission Standards. Communicate with operating room staff to provide required instruments. Have knowledge and demonstrate use of instruments for various special trays Operates all required equipment and machinery accurately and safely Capable of surgical instrumentation identification, decontamination, assembly, sterilization, storage and distribution Demonstrates knowledge of different types of sterilizer operation, cleaning, testing, monitoring and documentation activities Operates a sterilizer and washer/disinfector and cart washer. Monitors and maintains a clean and safe work area in accordance with Infection Control and Safety policies and procedures Knows process for conducting biological testing on all sterilizers: Steam and Sterrad Demonstrates knowledge of use, function and care of surgical instrumentation Demonstrates knowledge of orthopedic trays with implants Knows supplies and able to assemble case carts using Surgeon Preference cards Restocks, rotates, check expiration dates and put away supplies in Sterile Storage Performs other miscellaneous duties as assigned
Additional Job Description
Education: High School Diploma or GED
Credentials: Certified with either the Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution (CBSPD) or the Healthcare Sterile Processing Association (HSPA) or a Certified Surgical Tech (CST)
Work Experience: Advanced knowledge of various types of reusable surgical instrumentation, including power equipment and micro surgical instrumentation. Requires basic computer skills.
