Job Description
We seek a faculty member to teach academic, scientific, and professional writing and academic skills to graduate students primarily pursuing degrees in health care and/or biomedical science. Candidates with experience in writing centers and writing instruction, and/or teaching academic skills (such as test-taking strategy, board prep, and/or active learning study strategies) are invited to apply. While candidates with training in either of these areas are encouraged to apply, we hope to identify a candidate who will be interested in developing a career as both a writing instructor and learning specialist.
For writing and academic skills instruction, our teaching occurs primarily in scheduled one-on-one sessions with students (online as well as in person). When comfortable with the institution’s student population and curricular expectations, the faculty member will also conduct seminars on studying, test taking and writing skills for academic and professional success to those enrolled in health-related and biomedical science degree programs and faculty in our six colleges: Dental Medicine, Health Professions, Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, and Graduate Studies. The successful candidate will join our other five full-time CAE/WC faculty and collaborate to enhance the writing and learning of our students. The position is for those interested in a rewarding career teaching advanced, highly motivated students one-on-one, working alongside colleagues who foster collaborative learning and effective, compassionate communication. Our department is also home to the university-wide Office of Humanities, so applicants with an interest in medical or health humanities would find opportunities in that realm as well.
Preferred qualifications
• A doctoral degree in composition, rhetoric, education, or related fields.
• A demonstrated commitment to individualized writing or learning center pedagogy.
• An awareness of current trends and scholarship around the teaching of writing and learning science.
• Experience/training in providing instruction for academic success, academic counseling, and/or teaching students for whom English is an additional language.
• Experience with students or professionals in health care or related science disciplines.
Required qualifications
• A master's degree or higher in composition, rhetoric, education, or related fields.
• At least two years of teaching experience in a one-on-one or classroom setting.
• Demonstrated ability to teach and mentor graduate students.
• Ability to collaborate effectively with 8 other faculty and staff members.
Compensation: The position is a 12-month renewing faculty appointment with generous leave, competitive salary, and benefits.
Academic Rank: Rank and tenure status dependent upon qualifications and experience
CAE and Writing Center Mission
The Center for Academic Excellence and Writing Center (CAE/WC) faculty teach students to think critically about their writing and learning. Through individualized consultation, supplemental instruction, and humanistic inquiry, we foster collaborative learning and effective, compassionate communication.
Each learner’s growth is our goal.
The CAE/WC is at the forefront of the University’s mission to educate students to become skilled, knowledgeable, caring, and ethical health care professionals and biomedical scientists. We teach academic success occurs in individual appointments, through workshops, in a program of supplemental instruction, and via board/certifying exam review programs.
Our faculty teach effective written and oral communication, vital components of
health care and research, and collaborate with other university faculty to promote excellence in teaching as they strive to instill critical thinking and lifelong learning in students. Working with the six colleges (Dental Medicine, Health Professions, Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, and Graduate Studies), the CAE/WC also offers interprofessional humanities courses and programs to encourage students to explore ethical issues and enhance their understanding of the populations they will serve. These initiatives foster self-reflection, narrative competence, and compassion in future health care providers and biomedical scientists.
