Job Description

Chair, Department of Regenerative Medicine & Cell Biology

The Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) College of Medicine in Charleston, South Carolina, seeks an accomplished, nationally recognized academic leader to serve as Chair of the Department of Regenerative Medicine and Cell Biology, a top 20 NIH-funded department.

MUSC, the state's only academic health science center, consists of six colleges and educates and trains approximately 3,500 students and approximately 1,000 residents annually. The University and its health system have collective annual budgets of approximately $9 billion and annual research funding of over $370 million.  MUSC is ranked among the nation’s leading innovation institutions with >600 national and international patents. MUSC leads the nation with COBRE awards and has been supported by an institutional CTSA award for over a decade. MUSC research is facilitated by cores that provide advanced technology and shared instrumentation, including bioinformatics, drug discovery, mouse behavioral phenotyping, molecular analytics & proteomics, and advanced imaging and cell models. The MUSC strategic plan has facilitated the launch of new initiatives including a focus on artificial intelligence, precision medicine, digestive health, cancer, & neurosciences.  In the Charleston area, MUSC operates its flagship medical center, a nationally recognized children's hospital, the NCI-designated Hollings Cancer Center, a Level I trauma center, and an Institute of Psychiatry, along with a number of outreach locations.  Through its regional health network, MUSC Health serves patients throughout the state.

The Department of Regenerative Medicine and Cell Biology is one of 24 basic science and clinical departments within the MUSC College of Medicine and currently consists of 21 tenure-track faculty, 3 research track faculty, 11 postdocs, and 20 graduate students. A vibrant interdisciplinary hub, the department brings together faculty that cover a range of research areas including cancer development, cardiovascular biology, digestive and liver disease, and regenerative medicine. The department has also been extremely successful in contributing to the success of collaborative institutional programs that support the training and career development of students, post-docs, and junior faculty.  The department is also heavily involved in biomedical education through the training of medical and graduate students.

Reporting directly to the Dean of the College of Medicine, the Chair will be tasked with leading the expansion of the research profile for the department in a manner which aligns with the College of Medicine and MUSC's strengths, which will include making strategic hires, supporting faculty, continuing to develop junior faculty, and encouraging interdisciplinary collaborations.

The successful candidate will hold a Ph.D., M.D., M.D./Ph.D or equivalent degree and have progressive administrative leadership experience in an academic medical center environment, a long history of active and robust extramural research funding and ability to support investigators, and excellent strategic skills and financial acumen.  It is expected that the incoming Chair will have academic accomplishments and national recognition for achievement in research pursuits that warrants a tenured appointment with high-impact publications and a strong track record of extramural funding.  This individual should have demonstrated experience in mentorship and evidence of having developed others in their academic careers.

Applications (including letter of interest and CV) should be submitted via the MUSC employment website.  Expressions of interest may also be sent by email to Jennifer Nall, Associate Dean and Chief of Staff, MUSC College of Medicine, at nallj@musc.edu.
