Job Description Summary

The Instructional Designer supports faculty in the design, development, and enhancement of graduate-level (Master’s and Ph.D.) courses across a range of biomedical and health sciences disciplines. This position uses evidence-based instructional strategies and educational technologies to optimize the graduate student learning experience at MUSC’s College of Graduate Studies.

Job Description

Course Design and Development (35%)

  • Collaborate with faculty to design high-quality online, hybrid, and in-person courses.
  • Ensure alignment between course outcomes, assessments, and learning activities.
  • Apply UDL and accessibility standards to all course materials.
  • Integrate multimedia, simulations, and active learning strategies for graduate education.

Faculty Support and Training (25%)

  • Provide individual consultations and group workshops to support faculty in instructional design.
  • Train faculty on use of the Learning Management System (e.g., Brightspace, Blackboard).
  • Recommend pedagogical strategies for adult learners and research-focused instruction.

Quality Assurance and Continuous Improvement (15%)

  • Conduct course reviews using institutional or national standards (e.g., Quality Matters).
  • Gather and analyze feedback for ongoing improvement of course design.
  • Support continuous quality improvement for graduate-level instruction.

Research and Innovation (15%)

  • Stay current with emerging technologies and best practices in instructional design.
  • Contribute to research, pilot initiatives, and publications related to instructional innovation.
  • Support scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL) initiatives in the college.

Documentation and Project Management (10%)

  • Track instructional projects using project management tools.
  • Maintain documentation of course design processes and outcomes.
  • Develop design templates and standardized instructional guides.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Instructional Design, Educational Technology, Curriculum & Instruction, or related field.
  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience in instructional design, preferably in a higher education or health sciences context.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of instructional models (e.g., ADDIE), adult learning theory, and course assessment strategies.
  • Experience with LMS platforms and accessibility compliance.
  • Experience working with graduate-level (Master’s or Ph.D.) curricula in biomedical sciences or STEM fields.
  • Familiarity with Quality Matters or similar instructional quality frameworks.
  • Background or formal training in biomedical education or health professions.
